In today’s society, computers and computer science play a large role in everyday life whether it be at work, at school or during personal time. In this paper the history of the computer, the science of them and its incorporation into school will be explored. The topic that the exploration will start with is the history of the Computer and computer science between 1936, starting with Alan Turing and his Universal Turing Machine, leading through Bell Laboratory and all the advances through and into present day. This will lead into the connection between the computer and education and how education was changed with the incorporation of computers. The final part explains the problems that has surrounded computers and the study of computer science since their creations and how the solutions were formed over the years and how they continue to change the face of computer science, like the first models being as large as small buildings or a more recent issue of the limited diversity of computer science. Without computers and computer science, schooling today would be very much different than it is today. Computers have an extensive history in education and the goal of this paper is to present that information. In 1936 one the first concept of a computer was developed by Alan Turing, the Universal Turing Machine(UTM). Before Turing, there were only theories about computing machines that could do simple calculations but there were not any functioning models. However
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries Science & Technology have grown-up a radical contribution to industry, and the personal computer has become a defining symbol of our age. In 1940, it was not recognized that Science & Technology would develop into an innovative way that would intensely affect business, trade, the monetary world, administration, discipline, education, communications, entertainment, and society as a whole. Today, information technology and its applications persist to go forward progressively. Computers and communication technology will become even more precious to civilization as they are ever more able to distinguish
In 1936 Alan Turing, an English mathematical and a logician created the “Turing machine” (Copeland, 2000) which was originally created for the purpose a mathematical tool, it represented a computing device that contained a read/write head or a scanner with a paper tape passing through it. This machine could
One of the major misconceptions about the history of Computer Science is that men were the first programmers when in fact it was the opposite. The very first computer theorized
Modern life is virtually dependent on computers and these points to the huge impacts computers have on modern life. Computers are used in many different areas such as in business, design, medicine, military amongst other a multifunctional roles. One of the greatest leaps in development of human beings has been because of the widespread usage of computers. In fact, the computer is the single greatest piece of technology in the 20th century and as such, they have been associated with certain social impacts. Modern life has borne the brunt of the benefits and negative impacts the usage of computers have impacted the world. The social impacts have been magnanimous across a variety of aspects such as; health, communication, social
Alan Turing (1912-1954) A British mathematician educated at Cambridge and Princeton universities. He introduced the concept of a theoretical computing device when his published the paper named "On Computable Numbers" in 1936. Turing was a pioneer working in computer theory; he expanded his research studying artificial intelligence and biological forms.
A computer engineer is a branch of engineers that have been integrated into electronic engineering and computer science. Computer engineers design and develop computers and other technological devices. What do computer engineers do? First we need to look at another type of computer engineer hich is computer hardware engineer. They research, design, develop and test the computer systems as well as component such as the processors, the circuit board, network and routers, memory devices. An important function that you should know about computer engineers is to integrate these components into computers and the hardware/network of the system. This engineer requires being able to work well with electrical items and have a good knowledge of
Computers have changed the way we work, be it any profession. Therefore, it is only but natural the role of computers ineducation has been given a lot of prominence in the recent years. Computers play a vital role in every field. They aid industrial processes; they find applications in medicine; they are the heart of the software industry; they play a vital role in education. Theuses of computers in education are manifold. Here, we shall discuss the important facets of the role of computers in education.
Getting information to the reader on computers and computer programming is the purpose of this essay, so there is no need to cover what one would need to know, as it will be explained. It is a crime that the people who have worked to create computers, and programming today have little to no place in the current history books. Although there has been the occasional movie such as The Imitation Game for the most part the history of computer programming has been criminally under reported. For some people like Jim Daniels a computer engineer and teacher at
By 2050 the world will need 6-7 cubic miles of oil. This is the equivalent to 28 gorge dams, 728 coal fired plants, 364 nuclear power plants, 229,550 wind turbines, or 638,750,000 solar panels. The world will also need clean water for 9 billion people. To make this happen engineers around the world will have to come together to maintain that much energy by 2050. Computer Scientists will be a major part in this process. Computer Science is very unique because of how many job fields there are, what computer scientists work on, and how computer scientists improve the daily lives for others.
Computers were born of lazy mathematicians. Perhaps not lazy. More so, they were mathematicians who were looking to make the process of complicated arithmetic more time efficient. In the general history of computer science, most of the individuals who paved the way for the field now were mathematicians.
• Switched network consists of a series of interlinked nodes, called switches (temporary connection btw 2 or > devices)
In this educational study, an analysis of the ”futuristic student” will define the increasing importance of computerized education as a way to dictate the needs of the student in the increasing role of information technology (IT) in the 21st contrary. In modern schools, the necessity of computerized education will provide stude4nts of the future with the necessary skills to participate in jobs related to this field of technology. Computers will become a more central part of educational curriculums, since the increasing use of IT will be channeled through medium of digital modes of communication. Also, this type of student will need to be aware of the technical aspects of computer technology as a vital component in the growth of technology based mediums of the future. Educators must realize the impact of exponentially expanded fields of technology that will become a prime objective for communicating and relaying information through the computerized technology. Therefore, the “futuristic student’ will be educated through increasingly complex system of computer technology as a basis for learning in a digital world. In essence, an analysis of the “futuristic student” will define the important role of computerized education as a basis for IT development and technical skills that will be essential for adapting to new technological trends.
1822: English mathematician Charles Babbage conceives of a steam-driven calculating machine that would be able to compute tables of numbers. The project, funded by the English government, is a failure. More than a century later, however, the world’s first computer was actually built.
Learning Outcomes: The learner is able to show an understanding of how computers developed and changed through the ages.
I earned my undergraduate degree in computer science from Gadjah Mada University, one of the best universities in Indonesia. I knew all along that communication, networking and leadership skills would very important in work and daily life. That was why since the first year in the university, I had been very active in student associations and campus activities. Through these extra-curricular activities, I was improving those skills. One moment that I will never forget is when I was entrusted as Chairman of Computer Exhibition in my campus. The exhibition was very successful and made record for the highest number of exhibition participants, visitors and transaction volume. With my hardest efforts, splitting time between extra-curricular activities and study, I successfully finished the undergraduate program with the status “very satisfactory” in 2000.
