The misunderstood subculture of music that many have come to know as “hip-hop” is given a critical examination by James McBride in his essay Hip-Hop Planet. McBride provides the reader with direct insight into the influence that hip-hop music has played in his life, as well as the lives of the American society. From the capitalist freedom that hip-hop music embodies to the disjointed families that plague this country, McBride explains that hip-hop music has a place for everyone. With the release of the single “Accidental Racist,” by Brad Paisley and LL Cool J, the lines between rap music and country music officially blurred beyond recognition. Fans of country and rap music downloaded and purchased the single to see how two completely different genres would blend. Billboard statistics show that most fans appreciated Paisley and Smith’s efforts. The origins of country music were the folk music of mostly white, working-class Americans. According to Sean Dooley who contributed to “The History of Country Music”, they blended popular songs, Irish and Celtic fiddle tunes, traditional ballads, cowboy songs, and various musical traditions from European immigrant communities. In the 1930s, radio and recordings had begun to popularize the new style, renamed as “country and western”. It included country, gospel, bluegrass, cowboy musicals, brother and sister duets, and western swing (Dooley). The flip side of country music was jazz.
When looking at country music from the early 20th century, to what it is today there has been some change but most of the concepts have stayed the same. Much of the country from the early times had music about religion, or hardships that were being faced. This is the same as in the present, there are many songs about turning to religion to find hope. There are also the instruments that are used, the bajo, and other stereotypical country instruments are still used to today. This sound that they have, and that these instruments make are what really categorize the music as country. The sound of country has been modified but the underlying sounds have stayed the same, and the messages that are being sung about have been consistent throughout time. This shows that country is very much like its older counterpart with a few modern changes that are made.

Music is filled with emotion throughout the genres. Country, rap, pop, jazz, classical, indie, alternative, and rock are all individual types of music. Different artists display diverse emotions through their music. Country and rap are two totally opposite types of music. Country is mellow and romantic, while rap is fast paced and sometimes very inappropriate. As a child, many want to listen to upbeat, cheerful music. As a teen or young adult, we listen to multiple genres, exploring our interests. The difference between my music that I listened to in in my younger years compared to now is not distinctive.
