In a consumer society design is used in many ways including as communications tool, as in exhibition design. A common communication technique is to appeal to visually literate and sophisticated audiences through the use of fashionable finishes and materials. Designers of course establish fashions as well as exploit them. Their role in creating consumer desire cannot be ignored and since this process demands continuous change, they are faced with a challenge. Their work may need to be sustainable and capable of renewal through evolution, redevelopment or replacement. Ensuring that renewal is sustainable requires careful and creative design consideration. A common misperception is that environmentally sound products sacrifice something in terms of performance. There is still quite a lot of resistance amongst the general public that these things [sustainable designs] can look modern and be part of the mainstream without compromising performance and aesthetics. A designer employing sustainable design practices has to challenge this assumption with imaginative designs for products that are just as viable as the non-sustainable alternative. Adhering to this principle ensures that sustainable designs are desirable. …show more content…
This is called the 'cradle-to-grave' effect and is something that can be taken into account by designers wishing to adopt sustainable practices at all stages of the design process and in every aspect of exhibition design. This includes the materials they specify; where they will be obtained and how they are manufactured; how an exhibition is constructed; how it will be used and disposed of; and the type of energy': used in the exhibition. The list could be extended but what is important to remember is that adopting good practice at any stage, even if not all stages, can still yield a positive
At times when sustainability seems to be the mantra for not only corporations but also the lay man, sustainable fashion is a much less understood term as "sustainability" alongside "fashion” are two seemingly contradictory concepts as fashion is all about change and sustainability is all about preservation. Sustainable fashion, in its purest form generates new ideas on how to produce fashion with a sense of ethics, organic or renewable resources, and socially responsible manufacturing techniques. Simply put, the term “eco-fashion” refers to stylized clothing that uses environmentally sensitive fabrics and responsible production techniques.
According to the author of “Taking the Lead” Felice Silverman, “the introduction of LEED v4 represents the next step in the evolution of sustainable design, but it’s interesting to note that as we learn more about creating green spaces, new concerns continue appear”. The example she gives deals with encouraging people as designers to see products earn third-party certifications, and designers should remember to look at more than just the single-attribute benefits of products. Designers need to be able to arm themselves with the best information on sustainability there is, and continue to review process, systems and products that could potentially cause harm to the environment and the people
"Sustainable Architecture" - this phrase in recent years is mentioned a lot. The concept of "sustainable architecture" is associated, even identified with the concept of green architecture, ecological architecture, environmentally friendly, energy efficient ... to reach a stable value for the environment human life, reduce negative impacts on the environment in the present and future. However, although this interpretation is correct, but only one aspect, because that's what people are missing and need to achieve. The process is just as important as the materials used in the production. Alongside production technology innovations, brands such as Adidas and Nike have begun to use recycled materials in their shoes. The way to ‘do more with less’ will involve innovations in the types of materials used in products. Adidas has prototyped Primeknit shoes made from recovered ocean fishing nets while Nike is using recycled polyester, diverting plastic bottles from landfills. Furthermore Nike has begun to implement sustainability metrics into their material choice and product design. This helps to ensure that there is greater transparency to the trade-off’s that designers are making between functional performance and environmental impact. To ensure continuous superior product performance a business must drive product innovation as well as
The fashion industry is rapidly growing and constantly generating new fashion trends almost weekly. Fashion for some may seem ridiculous and unnecessary; but fashion is not just a meaningless usage of article of clothing or farcical materials sew together for coverage. There is more to fashion than meets the eyes, fashion is precious and significant. It is a reflection of self-image, it speak the ream about who we are and how we review ourselves. Not only is fashion the reflection of self-image but also the reflection of our history as Coco Channel have said, “Fashion is not something that exist in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Fashion

With consumer culture rapidly increasing, commercialism is at its peak. Branding has become an identity; the way the public defines itself and actively relies on it to express its beliefs and personality. The consumerist community is heavily influenced by graphic designers through form of advertisement, designed to reflect the mass-media networks in a sophisticated manner. (J. Berger). A study by Daniel Yankelovich shows that an individual living in a city 30 years ago, experienced approximately 2,000 ads messages a day, compared to estimated 5,000 today (Yankelovich,). By visually communicating a message, graphic designers influence society’s decision making therefore, being accountable for the message they are conveying, whether it is positive or negative.

For the purpose of this paper we will use the following definition of visual merchandising: “Visual merchandise is the presentation of a store and its merchandise in such a manner that will attract the attention of potential customers. It involves decorating the store keeping the interior presentation the same as what is promised on the outside.” (Economic Times) And consumer behavior as “... the study of individuals, groups or organisations and the processes they use to select, secure, use and dispose of products, services, experiences, or ideas to satisfy needs and the impact that these processes have on the consumer and society...” (Cant, et al. 2013)
Thus it can be concluded that in order for design to progress, embracing global trends is an inevitable outcome in order for design to better satisfy changing times and consumer needs. However it must be stressed that we should also do our best to preserve regional crafts as it forms the basis of design. With the continuous advancement of technology, the world has evolved to become a global marketplace. The world has and always will be adapting products from a variety of seemingly exotic far away lands. Bridging the difference between the old views and the current modern view one method is that we can seamlessly integrate into a global system through communication, technology and philosophy. In order to retain much of our culture that seems to be lost in our fast paced society, one has to presenting a firm and strong foundation in our cultural and historical design knowledge, studying population trends, making use of production and decor trends and their relation to the global market. (Kermi,
