Evolution by natural selection is a result of evolution that leaves organisms well adapted to their current population but does not make a perfect organism (Smock 2014). Male guppies have shown over the past 200 years to have more or less colorful patterns decorating their bodies. Studies have shown that male guppies have more colorful body patterns in areas where there are no predators and more conservative colorations when in hostile waters (Futuyuma 2009). A 1980 study proved that once guppies were moved to safer waters, in the next later generations, more colorful male guppies began to appear (Futuyuma 2009). The guppy applies to the first rule of natural selection that there is variation in a trait in an organism in a population …show more content…
The other reason that Intelligent Design is not able to stand as a scientific theory is that it is inherently religious and therefore not actually scientific. That is proven in Judgment Day when it is discovered that prior to the court ruling that outlawed Creationism being taught in school, the textbook that was going to be used to teach Intelligent Design was using the word Creationism instead until it was changed in the next editing phase (Judgment Day 2014).
What one must do to reconcile science and religion is to let go of the idea that one discipline rules out the other (Miller 2001). Professor Ken Brown theorizes that maybe a higher power created a world that was complex and alive at it’s base and then allow it to be self-sustaining, developing on it’s own (Miller 2001) which is a theory that I can agree with. What needs to be understood is that science will never be able to explain why there is or is not a higher power and religion will never be able to explain widely accepted theories like evolution (Miller 2001). They both function on their own realities, one where science answers the natural world around us and one where religion gives meaning to our lives (Miller 2001). The rift is made because there are people that deny the idea that something other than a higher power was behind the beginning of
I. Acceptance of Creation is growing in spite of overwhelming evidence proving Evolution There is no easy resolution for whats true and evolution or creationism. It is a complex topic with profound scientific, religious, educational, and criticism. How can a student or parent come to grips with this issue? Evolution vs. Creationism provides a badly needed, comprehensive, and balanced introduction to the many facets of the current debates about what should be taught in a classroom or in reality itself. Evolution relies on scientific facts while creationism clings on biblical beliefs. But the legal and
Where do we come from? The creation of the world has been told through many different stories, and from a variety of religions across the world. The argument between evolution and creation has been debated back and forth for years. So how do we know which claim is correct? Has all life evolved from simple bacteria to all the species that appear today, or did life on earth begin with God's creation of Adam from dust and his partner Eve from adam’s rib bone. As a child I grew up attending church every Sunday with my grandparents, attending bible school, and taught the ways of the Lord. I wouldn’t know any different until my eyes were opened in biology class where the theory of Evolution is justified. There are different explanations to
The debate over Evolutionary theories and Creationism beliefs has been a major debate throughout our churches, education system, and even our homes. There have been countless scientists, theologians, journalists and Christians that have studied both sides of the spectrum, that argue how the world we live in was created. Many empty statements, with little to no facts, just assertions about this particular question have been stated in many debates all over the world. So on one side we have Creationism belief that essentially argues that God is the “intelligent designer” and on the other side Evolutionary theories that state the world has evolved over the centuries. In the Merriam- Webster dictionary, Creationism is defined as, “a doctrine or theory holding that matter, the various forms of life, and the world were created by God out of nothing and usually in the way described in Genesis “. Merriam- Webster dictionary also defines Evolution as, “a theory that the differences between modern plants and animals are because of changes that happened by a natural process over a very long time; the process by which changes in plants and animals happen over time; a process of slow change and development”. So is it possible to believe both of those definitions?
As we have learned in class and as we still see now in the modern world, the topic of evolution vs creationism has been one of much dispute. To many, there is only one side; you either believe in God or in Science, you either believe that Adam and Eve are our ancestors or you believe that through the years and the changes in the world we have evolved from apes. Whichever side you find yourself on there will always be someone that disagrees with you and is willing to tell you why you are wrong.
Natural selection is an important component of evolution. Natural selection occurs when some members of a population are better fit for survival and reproduction than the others in that population (Phelan 284-85, 2011). The environment in which organisms live plays a part in natural selection as well. Depending on the conditions of the environment, the organisms may pass down selected traits to their offspring. These selected traits will allow for the next generation to better adapt and survive longer. One example of evolution that has occurred in the past ten years is that of hypolimnas bolina, or the blue moon butterfly. The blue moon butterfly evolved through the process of natural selection in order to survive. The male blue moon
The controversy over Creationism and Evolution is a widely debated topic, especially when it comes to what is being taught in the biology classrooms in public schools today. It may be hard to imagine, but just over 100 years ago the curriculum and beliefs would have looked dramatically different. One central court case that created a spark of bringing evolution to public schools was the infamous Scopes trial of 1925 in which science teacher John Scopes challenged Tennessee state law and taught evolution in his high school science class. Tennessee state legislature had passed a bill, known as the Butler Act just months before, banning the teaching of evolution. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) represented Scopes after his arrest in a case that riveted public attention. Although at trial Scopes was ultimately found guilty, the Butler Act was no longer enforced and laws prohibiting evolution being taught in the classroom continually were defeated over the course of the next two years. In 1968, the ACLU went to the Supreme Court on behalf of Susan Epperson to fight against the ban on teaching evolution in Arkansas. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the ban as unconstitutional as the First Amendment under the Establishment clause does not allow teachings to tailor to certain religions (“State of Tennessee V. Scopes,” n.d.).
Most people view the theory of evolution as being a feasible explanation of how life became what is today. Evolution is a theory that the various organisms are descended from others that lived in earlier times and that the differences are due to inherited changes that occurred over many generations. It must be realized that evolution is a theory and cannot be considered a fact. Even though it’s roots are from Greek anatomists, the theory of evolution came to light in 1859 when Charles Darwin published his book The Origin of Species, which dealt with natural selection. Since then, scientists have been continually searching for proof for the theory through research and experimentation. Some of the topics that
The twentieth century has encountered numerous contentions; among these was the creationism versus evolution debate. Before going too in-depth, creationism is the religious conviction that a higher power made the animals and everything existing today through extraordinary intercession. The beliefs of creationism have to be accepted on faith and cannot be further questioned. Then again, evolution is a progressive procedure in which something changes into an alternate and generally more intricate or better frame. Implying that is it conceivable to test with the scientific method. Prior to Charles Darwin, there were many researchers who proposed the theory of evolution, despite the fact that Darwin was the first to have had solid information and
Which is more viable, the theory that the planet humans live on is 4.6 billion years old and that everyone and everything in the world has evolved over all these years? Or is it the theory from the first book of the Bible, Genesis, that the almighty and powerful God created the heavens and the Earth over a course of six days and six nights? No one actually knows the answer because no person that is alive today was alive when the Earth was created. Although there has yet to be a definitive answer to this life long question, each side has evidence to support its claim. But, despite the towering amount of evidence that both sides have, one can not help but think that the correct answer comes from science.
In this paper I will be explaining two sides of the evolution vs. creationism debate. The topics I am going to write about are fossil evidence, the origin of life, and Darwin’s “theory” of natural selection. I will be presenting a view of both sides of the argument they will be on the creation side and evolution standpoint. I would suggest that you, the reader, would have a previous knowledge of all the topics so that you may get a full understanding of both sides. If there is no prior knowledge of one side or another know that not all people that have beliefs in any of these topics agree with all of these standings.
The first words in the Bible are, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1, English Standard Version). This statement leaves a question for modern day society. Does this verse mean God created the universe in six literal days and rest on the seventh? Or could it possibly mean this was a non-literal text that leaves room for the possibility of evolution. Evolution and Creationism have been battling over this issue for many years. What must be realized before examining these two theories is the fact that both require faith. Requiring faith means neither can be proven right completely. These two theories bring to light the literal and non-literal reading of Genesis 1 and 2. Creationism believes in the literal
Creationism and Evolution is a heavily discussed topic all over the world, sparking controversy on every turn. Whether humanity evolved from monkeys over time or was created instantly by an almighty God; that has been the debate between creationist and scientist since Charles Darwin came forth with the evolution theory in the late eighteen-fifties. It’s hard to contest against the facts of science. Science tells us that the Earth was created relatively 4.5 billion years ago and life evolved from single-celled organisms. But can science really be counted on? For thousands of years science said that the universe always existed, that it never had a beginning, but now we all know how wrong they were. Religion had it right for thousands of years. Religion said it first, in the Christian religion in the Book of Genesis the first passage says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. At first the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (The Holy Bible), a flash of light that created everything, doesn 't that sound a lot like the Big Bang Theory. To me creationism sounds far better than evolving from a bunch of apes, but I’ll let you make your own choice.
If the question was posed as to what is the debate between creationism vs. evolution consist of, the thought that it is ‘“God did it” vs. “Natural processes did it,”’ (Scott, 2004) may arise. Science cannot absolutely prove or disprove Creation or Evolution. Yet scientist and the remainder of society use creationism and evolution to prove our existence. Creationist believe in the Christian account of the origin as recorded in Genesis. Creationism is the belief that statements such as “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (NIV) found in Genesis 1:1 and also “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (NIV) found in John 1:1. Evolution is the belief that everything just changed over
The debate between creation and evolution has been around for a long time. For much of it, it has presented a choice between the two. Some claim that you either believe in God or evolution, not both. Others, that you have to choose young earth creationism simply because theistic evolution is not a viable option. Still more present young earth creationism as a naive understanding of both the Bible and science. However, since each position has evidence in support of it and against it, it is in no way true that any of them present us with an undeniable position of definite accuracy. Furthermore, the idea that there is only a choice between creation and evolution is false. Indeed, there are more positions than even creationism and theistic
Do people think that humans came from primates or do people think we were put on this earth by God? Everything had to be here at some point(like a person) eventually. Humans are the smartest thing on earth, so from that assumption we would have to be here the longest to grow smarter, makes since? Or people can believe that we came from primates and not believe in God or people can believe in God and think that we were put here on earth by Him. Creationism is valid in the US and the people who founded it, The belief in creationism is more relevant in the world today because it is the most popular belief, The fact that creationism can be found through american culture and many other cultures today. Creationism can be found all throughout american culture and all throughout history, there are over 2.2 billion christians(Creationists) in the world and the most common religion, and finally biblical stances are strongly relied on in the foundation of the U.S.
