To any outsider, Surena and Nortena girls seem to be one and the same. Without an understanding of the minute and significant differences between each distinct group of girls, it is easy to group them together, for the sake of simplicity. Indeed, many polling organization underestimate the differences between different sects of latina girls and often come up confused on why their predictions were wrong. However, with differences come similarities. Each group of girls belong to the same ethnic group, more or less. This means, that despite their territorial differences, similarities can be found. Each group has it’s own sets of colors, as Mendoza-Denton explained, “Early on I reasoned that the groups had different colors, and stayed away from the most obvious ones; red and blue, burgundy and navy. Gradually green was added to my schema (Filipino or Samoan gang) and purple (taken sometimes as a variant of blue) and brown (Brown Pride Locos). The only colors “left” as far as I could tell were orange and yellow (ugh) and black (Mendoza-Denton 52, 53).” Nortena girls often wore red, to project to other people with knowledge of the culture in the area which group they belonged to. A typical outfit, ususally consisted of red belt, shoes, and shoelaces. However, for girls the guidelines are much less strict and allowed for different variations on the color red, such burgundy or pink. Furthermore, Nortena girls often created and passed around depictions of the number 14. Sometimes, a form of endearment for another person within the gang is used, “ene”. This is a nod to the fourteenth letter of the alphabet, n. Surenas mostly wore the color blue and used the number 13 often in their depictions. Some of the their traditions, such a the letter m being prominent in their art, is related to gang activity. T-Rex, who is a very vocal advocate for the virtues of Nortena culture, did admitt that “...both groups have the same idea” and that they are all “...truly mexican till the day (we) die (Mendoza-Denton, 111).” When Nortenas and Surenas are viewed through the lens of only mexican girls, the differences between the two groups seem insurmountable. However, when Nortena and Surena girls are compared with other ethnic groups, such as caucasian and asian girls, their differences seem smaller. This isn’t to undermine the differences of each group, rather the girls have no choice. The world that many mexican girls live in is stacked against them. English as a Second Language classes do not count towards college requirements, many girls have family members who are in the states undocumented, and outside of their high school and immediate community, many latinxs face harsh racial stereotypes. Nortena and Surena ideologies may attempt to overcome these barriers different, but as a whole each group is working towards a better life. While Nortena girls would often call Surena girls “wetbacks” or tell them to go back to Mexico, they didn’t tolerate other non mexican doing the same. The obstacles that Nortena and Surena girls faced created a sense of sameness, an understanding that both groups faced the same discrimination, that helped maintain the overall California-Mexican
This brings me to the certain unfairness, stereotypes, and myths about Hispanic/Latino culture. While growing up we experience some of these types of situations. When we think about a Hispanic/Latino person we think about tamales, tacos, rice and beans which is a stereotype. However, Susie Jans-Thomas wrote Beyond Tamales, Tacos, and Our Southern Neighbors: Exploring Latino Culture in Child and Young Adult Literature to show that there is more to them then just those expressions. I believe we have all experienced or witnessed racism, power abuse, and felt lost in one point of our lives. This just shows that we need to try to work harder and together more.
In several cultures, women are seen as archetypes more than men. The proposition of women are instantly idealized and glorified and instantaneously ignore the true complexity of a woman. Countless of these superficial images can be seen across various cultures where the societies within these cultures define what it means to be a female and what type of behavior is and isn’t acceptable within those parameters. The persistent restatement of these stories throughout these generations reinforces the gender system. Women who step out of the norm in these societies are then held punishable for their actions. Gloria Anzaldúa was a Texas-born, lesbian, Latina, feminist, that wrote about many of her personal experiences and views of the diverse background she grew up in. Growing up a certain culture at home and being in a country with a different culture, brings along a lot of self-identifying issues. Gloria Anzaldúa uses various strategies and languages to write this powerful piece by code-switching, quoting others, diction, and rhetorical questions. Anzaldúa’s “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” speaks about the social issues that Latinos face involving identity, language, and sexism.
Despite being outcasted by other feminist groups such as the mainstream Chicano movement, and the second wave feminist movement, they wanted to set themselves apart through the use of their own personal experiences with gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class structure, and so forth. This term relates to Mexican-American and Hispanic women who oppose the traditional “household wife” role. They challenged the fundamental ideologies women, and young women are taught at an early age, and breaks away from the idea that men have dominion over women. This can also be categorized as a movement that fights against stereotypes against women. The formation of segregated barrios and the development of a wealth of community-provided services showed that Mexican-Americans were not content to be marginalized by the United States. Instead, they were embracing an empowering new sense of self-determination and referring to themselves as “Mexicanos or as members of a larger, pan-Hispanic community of La Raza.” At this time La Raza referenced individuals of the Mexican “race”, whether they were in Mexico or in the United States, and was particularly important in the United States, where race was more important than citizenship. In the late 19th and early 20th century United States, race was determined by purity of blood, and there were only two races—white and black. White meant the individual had “pure blood” (European blood); black meant that the individual’s blood included indigenous or African influences. Being white meant being able to exercise one’s constitutional rights and being treated as a normal member of society’s dominant group. Being black meant that, regardless of whether he or she was a citizen, the individual would face discrimination similar to that which I described earlier. When the Spanish conquerors mixed with the people of Latin America, forming the mestizo, or mixed race, population that now composes most of the region, they removed themselves from a “white” classification in the United States. Thus, by engaging with the concept of La Raza, which connotes a mestizo race and population, Mexican-Americans rejected the binary nature of race in the United States and embraced what made them different—their indigenous-mixed blood and the cultural heritage that accompanied it. There are three iconic symbols of the presence of Mexican Americans in the history of the United States: The role of Mexican Americans in the WWII, the Bracero movement, and the Zoot Suit Riot. All three moments provide insight on the participation of Hispanics in the construction of the American society and more importantly, on the way the Mexican American identity has been constructed and on the ways this community has been considered, in general terms, a group of domestic aliens. As a consequence, Mexican Americans have been segregated and denied equal opportunity historically. However, they are here to stay, an Anglos better learn to deal with their presence.
We live in a society where for decades we have been socialized to believe that there are only two genders: male and female. The idea of gender is socially constructed. There is a Latino identity that’s neither white nor black she mentioned, and it is a positive identity. It appeared that 48% of latinos claimed to be white. Classifying themselves as whites connotes that they have already assimilated to the American Culture The survey wrapped up that there is a considerable demographic shift identifying Latinos to be increasingly aligned with the color that that defines America. On the other hand, 42% of Latinos marked other race, and 2% claimed to be black. Even in the census, to be white signifies the dominance and the notion that it is better than non-white. People who look similarly share the qualities that are perceived to be alike. They usually enjoy similar success and suffer similar sorrows. Finding my voice as a woman in the world has led me to have a greater appreciation of my Mexican-American culture. Although the women in Galang’s book are of a different cultural background I was able to understand and connect with the struggles they went through trying to balance those varying cultures and the difficulty they had in finally accepting it. The story that most exemplifies the two spectrums of acceptance of one’s culture is “Rose Colored”. While going through elementary, middle, and a small portion of high school I could identify mostly as Rose because I hadn’t yet accepted the culture I was from. I was ashamed of being part Mexican and thought people would automatically stereotype and not like me. I saw my curly hair as something that should be hidden, always in braids because it wasn’t straight like all the others and also avoided talking about my home life for fear of being cast out as different. As I grew up into a young woman I began reading more and more about my culture and researching what it meant to be a true Mexican-American.
