Marine Corps customs and courtesies are very important to the way the Marine Corps works. They are intended to reinforce discipline and the chain of command, showing how Marines will treat their superiors. They also enhance esprit de corps and unity. This is what makes the Marine Corps the brotherhood that it has become. Military courtesies include correct forms of address like; Sir, and Ma'am, and when each should be used; the salute, and standing at attention, proper wear of military covers, and the rules for behavior in different ceremonies. Specifics can change depending on an individual's rank, location, and conditions. A military funeral, for example, requires stricter etiquette than a normal day. Courtesies are sometimes relaxed …show more content…
But one thing they all have in common is they show the respect and honor the soldiers and superiors have for one another. Military courtesies are often very similar to the civilities found in the civilian world as well as daily life. The only difference is that it is mandatory for the courtesies seen in the military to be adhered to and followed by its soldiers. If these courtesies are not followed, the offending soldier can, and almost always will, be punished. This punishment can come in the form of corrective training, known commonly as essays, extra duty and can go as far as court martial, jail time and/or being discharged from the military. In the military, manners and levels of respect help to identify the difference between junior to senior ranking members. Courtesies and customs of the Army have been practiced for hundreds of years. They involve a code of conduct that is mandatory for every member of the army to follow. Some are obviously against the rules of professionalism such as public display of affection in uniform, as is being intoxicated in uniform and exhibiting violent behavior are conducts that are punishable in the military code of conduct. Others are unique codes of behavior that must to be followed in order to present a one of a kind organizational structure to the military as these customs and practices instill and show discipline and
‘Additionally, it is still one of the finest methods for developing confidence and troop leading abilities in our subordinate leaders.’’ The Marine Corps drill and ceremonies is the most important tradition because it foster leadership, unequal discipline, and
My military organization culture begins with the core values “Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence in All We Do”. Which sets the foundation of our organization culture. We share history and sagas from previous and current wars and fallen soldiers. In every military installation we have daily rites and rituals that are reveille, retreat and taps music. During out door activities and the music begins to play, you have to stop and render proper respect to the note. Then, we also have ceremonial protocols that we have to follow and respect for example, retirement ceremonies and enlistments.
Paul is a third-grader who is a very strong reader. He chooses to spend most of his time reading and enjoys many different topics. He writes long and complex stories during writer workshop as well. Paul seldom engages socially with other children; in fact, he is quite timid with both children and adults.
The Marine's take you as an individual, break you down to nothing, and throw you in with others who are at the same level. Thus making your "Tribe" and through out the training cycle Loyalty to your platoon, drill instructors, and Corps are beaten and instilled in you. Discipline which you must show and demonstrate on a daily basis in order to complete and accomplish the mission or task that is given to you. Honor is the binding value that is created whith the practice and application of discipline, and loyalty. Almost identical to the corps values one can see why the Marine Corps is so profeicient at what they do because of their ethos or, more importanlty, their demonstration and commitment to the Warrior Ethos. The Marine Corps are not the only ones who have a strong warrior ethos, there are many others. The Greek states with the Spartans, Macedonians, and the Athenians. Each one, very different to the other, but, their warrior ethos is there just the same. Along with everything there is always an opposite or evil. This is also evident with the warrior ethos. Those whose deeds, tho may be fitting in there eyes as keeping their honor and loyalty to there tribe, but, in reality, they are what can be called the darkside of
The landscape of colonial America has dramatically changed beginning with the root of the North Eastern Indians and following the routes of the thirteen American English colonies. As American history progresses, we have to put ourselves in the mindset of the people of the past to learn about the past. Our values and beliefs are evidently different, yet similar as we build from our mistakes and acknowledge the accomplishments of America. Given the misunderstanding of the values and beliefs of the Northeastern Indians by early European settlers, stark differences occur like using property for its ecological use and avoiding the accumulation of wealth compared to colonial American English colonies’ use of property for cash crops and acquisition of wealth for political and social status, as well as similarities between the two in valuing time and social
In my short time in the Marine Corps, I’ve come to learn quite a few things, for example the simple tradition that has been upheld within the Marine Corps for many years now, And that alone separates this branch from any other simply because we as marines hold ourselves to a higher standard, we all have a sense of pride within ourselves and our fellow brothers and sisters and our job and where we come from which is again our tradition.
Respect for my subordinates, peers, and supervisors. As Soldiers and leaders, we desire respect is the Army Value I hold highest. I will give respect to my peers and subordinates at all times. I am a firm believer in praising in public and disciplining in private. The quickest way to lose respect is through embarrassing Soldiers in front of others.
Respect, especially in the Army is a very important value to live by. It is much more than just talking kindly and listening to someone. It is the process of taking into consideration someone’s emotions, feelings and needs. You must also focus on their ideas, thoughts, and preferences. It is showing someone that you value their time; that you care what they have to say. Showing someone respect allows that person to know and acknowledge that you are tracking them and that you comprehend and believe in what they are saying, It is important to allow someone to feel your respect for them. It will ease the conversation and create trust. Behavior and attitude will allow the person demanding respect to feel that respect. When we
The culture of the Army is one very particular pretty much consist of a centralized one that goes down to the single soldier itself, what I mean with this is that orders flow through a structure path all the time. There is no double standard in the army basically what is right is right for everybody and what is wrong is wrong for everybody. In the Army their culture is based in teamwork we are as strong as our weakest link. In the Army they have Noncommissioned Officer and Commissioned Officers, how it works the Commissioned Officers communicate their intent to the noncommissioned officers and the noncommissioned officers execute. In other words is a very structured organization that
Customs and courtesies go back all the way to the to the beginning of the Air Force and well beyond. Customs and courtesies are how people show respect to others as well as objects such as the American flag. Through-out Detachment 630's cadet wing we show customs and courtesies in many ways. Some examples of these include: saluting higher ranking cadets and also the cadre members, reporting in while going to a meeting with cadre members, and calling POC, cadre, and others that work in the detachment sir or ma'am. Although we do preform some customs and courtesies in the wing overall I believe they still need improvement. There are many things we don't do around the detachment such as saluting the American flag as we walk by and casing the flags
Every branch has its own dress code traditions when it comes to the military. But all the branches have some stuff in
How we judge others depend greatly on our own cultural norms. A person’s culture plays an important part of how we view other people, how we conduct business, how we view our own behaviors and style, the way we use language and how we solve problems, challenges and conflicts. The most importantly the way we developed new relationships.
Courtesies are traditionally defined as the showing of politeness in one’s attitude and behavior towards others. Military courtesies are defined as the manners and politeness in interacting with other military members. Courtesies are in accordance with displaying respect for both subordinate, and senior service members. Military courtesies are one of the first skills learned in basic training. This instils it in every soldier, sailor, marine, airman, and coast guardsman as an integral part of military service. One of the reasons why this is so critical is due to the interrelationships that must be created to accomplish the mission at hand. People from all walks of life are to interact and work together, or against each other towards a goal. Having a standard for interacting with others serves to eliminate many negative encounters that may come about. Mutual respect though at times lacking, is extremely important as well. No matter what rank, sex, or race all military personnel must have a basic level of respect for their fellow brothers and sisters in arms. Some
The Marine Corps transforms young civilians into a life of values: honor, courage, and commitment. These values are instilled in each recruit as they go through the eleven
Although actual nights are not a part of today’s society, we have modern day knights in the form of soldiers. In a sense, the values of the U.S army trace back to the Age of Chivalry, and many of their values coincide with such. For example, the Army values loyalty just as knights did. Soldiers are expected to be true to the U.S Constitution and fellow soldiers. They wear a uniform to express this loyalty. They also value duty, which is fulfilling your obligations and accomplishing a multitude of objectives with a team. Respect is also esteemed in the Army. Soldiers pledge to “treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same.” (The Army Values, 25-26). The next value is selfless service, putting the welfare of others above yourself. Then Honor, which is a soldier living their everyday life while encompassing the values of the Army. Following this is integrity, which is doing what is right in a legal and moral sense. Lastly, demonstrating courage is expected of a soldier. Proving one’s ability to overcome all types of adversity and standing up for your beliefs are parts of being a courageous soldier. Overall, these values of the modern U.S army coincide with the values of medieval knights.
