Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, an adaptation of the Chinese film, Infernal Affairs, is an extravagant film. The exorbitant amount of violence and the protracted running time (151 minutes) are staples of Scorsese’s work. Scorsese’s signature excess is on full display in The Departed, but, as with many of his other films, it does not impede the film’s potency. The Departed utilizes superb acting, meticulously crafted atmosphere, and a detailed setting to turn a potentially convoluted storyline into an enthralling cinematic experience.

The film exposes the truth about drug addiction and the effects it has on peoples lives. It also shows people who are trying to fit into society which can have disastrous effects which causes them to turn to drugs to fit in. The film follows four individual characters and their addictions and is set in Brooklyn. The main protagonist in the film is Harry Goldfarb who is represented as a typical drug addict who has a plan to make money and be able to use drugs with his cocaine addicted girlfriend

The film was never creepy in its phantasmagoric moments, but Assayas’ vision caught my attention from start to finish, especially through the emotional struggles of this seductive woman who also allows herself to be seduced by the forbidden. He had a perfect ally in Stewart who gave an out-of-this-world performance, shaping a character that needs to find how to deal with grief and, at the same time, accept what she can’t control.

The film is not your regular police story but about how the police is going against the same strategy they are using. The fact that the same set and props were shared between both casts of actors furthered the establishment that while these are two different families, they represent many families. While the set remained stationary, there was an excessive amount of props. At first, I thought it seemed almost too cluttered. Then, it slowly began to dawn on me that the director may have been trying to purposefully clutter the stage in order to demonstrate the clutter the characters have made of their lives.
