Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream
Requiem for a Dream is a movie that was directed by Darren Aronofsky. It's a story about the decent in to the hell and torment of drug addiction; however, Aronofsky sets out to demonstrate both the seductive ecstasy of a high and the shattering anguish of addiction. Character development is the main focus of Requiem, which is shown through creative camera angles, precise editing, and brilliant acting. This movie blew my mind away, actually I found it difficult to sit through the entire movie without taking a break to go outside just to make sure that reality wasn't as bad as the movie made it seem. Aronofsky did a mind-boggling job of exploring the pleasures, and horrors of drug use.

The movies start out with a semi regular family, considering it is only a mother and a son, and the son is a heroin user. Dean Schmitz a movie reviewer for Variety says that, ¡§Many of the tragedies in the world are accidents; sad blunders of luck, but some, like the four stories in this film are the results of a chain of events that started off with ¡§normal everyday folks¡¨ and ended in the worst kind of way, and in a way that was not accidental, which is maybe the saddest thing of all.¡¨ All four characters start off as normal good people, other than the fact that three of them occasionally ¡§push off¡¨ which is the term used in the movie for shooting up heroin. The movie is broken down into three seasons of the same year, summer, fall, and winter. Summer is a great time for all of them, they seem to be doing well in life and most of their dreams seem to be within reach. Fall, is just what it says, all of the characters begin to fall into, or at least begin their decent in to their drug educed slumps. Finally comes winter, it is this season that all four characters hit rock bottom. Which is graphically depicted in a final montage of disturbing and shocking clips of all of them in their personal hell. This movie also contains a memorizing sound track that is just as unusual as the rest of the movie. Each character is given their own background music, which

Requiem for a Dream depicts four individuals and their addictions to cocaine, heroin, and diet pills. Set in Brooklyn, New York, the characters each have their own dreams and addictions and their drugs are easily attainable trapping them in a cycle of dependence. The central character, Harry Goldfarb, is a young man who lives in virtual poverty because every cent he earns or steals goes toward his next high. He dreams of making a big enough score selling dope that will lead him to becoming financially stable and "on Easy Street" as he makes a home with his girlfriend. Tyrone, his best friend and business partner shares many of Harry's aspirations and addictions. Marion Jones, Harry's girlfriend, is an addict like her boyfriend and dreams
Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father is exactly what it claims to be by title, a story of race and identity. Barack Obama comes from a diverse background, which he explores throughout the book. Having a white American mother and black Kenyan father, he has a different experience than the majority of people in society when it comes to race and identity, however still it seems similar to the experience of many blacks as described in William E. Cross’s Black Psychological theory, the Nigresence Model of Racial Identity Development. While Obama’s experience does not necessarily occur in chronological order according to Cross’s model, in my opinion, it portrays a good example of how someone enters each stage of

Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, an adaptation of the Chinese film, Infernal Affairs, is an extravagant film. The exorbitant amount of violence and the protracted running time (151 minutes) are staples of Scorsese’s work. Scorsese’s signature excess is on full display in The Departed, but, as with many of his other films, it does not impede the film’s potency. The Departed utilizes superb acting, meticulously crafted atmosphere, and a detailed setting to turn a potentially convoluted storyline into an enthralling cinematic experience.
The film exposes the truth about drug addiction and the effects it has on peoples lives. It also shows people who are trying to fit into society which can have disastrous effects which causes them to turn to drugs to fit in. The film follows four individual characters and their addictions and is set in Brooklyn. The main protagonist in the film is Harry Goldfarb who is represented as a typical drug addict who has a plan to make money and be able to use drugs with his cocaine addicted girlfriend
The film was never creepy in its phantasmagoric moments, but Assayas’ vision caught my attention from start to finish, especially through the emotional struggles of this seductive woman who also allows herself to be seduced by the forbidden. He had a perfect ally in Stewart who gave an out-of-this-world performance, shaping a character that needs to find how to deal with grief and, at the same time, accept what she can’t control.
The film is not your regular police story but about how the police is going against the same strategy they are using. The Departed tells the tale of how a police officer was placed undercover in the Irish Mob and the Irish mob vice versa placed a mole in the police force. The film was directed by Martin Scorsese and released in 2006. Scorsese directed other well-known crime films like Goodfellas, Casino, and Gangs of New York but surprisingly only The Departed won him the Academy Award for Best Director. Taking place in Boston, the movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Billy Costigan, the rat placed in the mob; Matt Damon as Staff Sergeant Colin Sullivan, the mole in the police force; Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello, the Irish mob boss; Mark
The fact that the same set and props were shared between both casts of actors furthered the establishment that while these are two different families, they represent many families. While the set remained stationary, there was an excessive amount of props. At first, I thought it seemed almost too cluttered. Then, it slowly began to dawn on me that the director may have been trying to purposefully clutter the stage in order to demonstrate the clutter the characters have made of their lives. I saw that the director chose to identify each character by what they had on their persons. The plot centered largely on what we as humans have become addicted to, and what was hindering us as individuals--whether it be pills, drugs, alcohol, or an obsession with cheap physical affirmations and
When their father died, their mother got depressed. She was drinking alcohol daily and was never sober. So June being the oldest had to step in and take care of his family. June had to sell weed to put food on the table and have money for his family if they needed anything they want. In this film the director gives the message that you should stick with your family and trust your instinct no matter what the situation or what people say. Also some issues of class/wealth. In each of these films we see how important it is to never give up on your family and how important it is to stink with your family through anything and everything. The director’s Patricia Riggen (Miracles from Heaven) and Jamal Hill (Brotherly love) of these films give the same purpose. That you should always stick with your family and trust your instinct no matter what people say about what’s happening. For an example from Miracles from Heaven is when Anna was in hospital. Christy went to church and people came up to Christy saying maybe this isn’t a mistake, bad things happened to bad people. Christy didn’t take
The diverse environmental sounds allow the audience to recognize the difference of settings through out the movie.
Before I begin to describe the film, I would like to emphasize that I will tell Sean´s story formally in a poetic realist style. Hallucinatory, sleepwalking sequences alternate with harsh reality in a desolated environment for the sake of telling slices of true life: Emotions, diversity and the unforeseen.
This is also a masterfully directed and wonderfully crafted movie; this movie never lags, and it always keeps you interested and in suspense. Denis Villeneuve remains one of the most interesting directors working today. After watching Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival, I'm convinced he is the real
Introduction/Content This novel takes place in Coney Island, Brooklyn, where we get to follow the stories of four individuals trying to pursue The American Dream, only to realize the illusion of it all.
I jolted awake in fear. I had a dream. A weird dream. A vivid dream. It was full of people shouting and bright flashes of light. It was confusing yet clear, like some part of me understood it. I didn’t know it would be important then but now I know. How? Well, it happened like this…
