Total Quality Management
Producing a quality product, whether a tangible item or a service, is the goal of all organizations, how this goal is achieved will be the challenge. Quality of the end product has been an obstacle in America for decades. In the post World War II era as production of products in America rose, the quality of those products diminished. At the same time other countries such as Japan were not experiencing the same quality issues.

The focus upon producing a quality product begins at the top level of management and extends through out the organization to the delivery person. In Quality Focused Management each employee and all processes are focused upon producing a quality product.
How TQM Applies to Loma Linda University Medical Center
I am a respiratory therapist at Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC). The hospital is very proud of the respected reputation which has been earned by the high quality of care provided. In one aspect, the quality management is similar to traditional management styles, with regards to each employee is responsible for delivering high quality care. A deeper look will reveal a TQM approach by the administrators and management at all levels.
The most obvious TQM is the establishment of guidelines for the alignment of the organization to achieve the standards set forth by the Joint Commission of Accredited Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The JCAHO was developed to provide guidelines for healthcare organizations to provide safe, quality patient care. All healthcare institutions must meet these guidelines in order to have the opportunity to provide care for patients. These guidelines extend from how oxygen tanks are stored to how often employees receive in-services, continuing educations, and tested for basic skills.

Although Health care has a complex adaptive system, leadership is crucial in implementing an improvement system (Sollecito & Johnson, 2013). The Quality Management team’s goal will be to continually strive to improve the care their organization delivers. In order for this to be achieved their must goals and objectives to work towards. The success of these goals and objectives are dependent upon The Quality Management Structure of the organization. With proper implementation and management of the quality care initiative, the organization should an improvement in patient safety and clinical outcomes.
Sullivan (2013) informed of the total quality management (TQM) created by Dr. Deming that are popular in numerous business organizations. Switching from solving problems to preventing problems, Sullivan (2013) explained that the TQM’s focal points are their clients, total employees’ participation, available data for measurement, and process improvements. With Deming’s 14 management points, St Jude Medical Center (SJMC) will be evaluated on its quality management.
Quality management in healthcare is an overall goal to provide excellent care in all areas. Each healthcare facility is charged the task to show their diligence when it comes to taking care of patients. Quality management role is important because it shows that there are internal processes that will have positive outcomes for the patients. In the healthcare delivery system there will be guiding principles, which is just a step above their standard service expectations. “According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the health care field is full of legal regulations (such as HIPAA, a confidentiality law), so quality management departments are responsible for identifying which statutes apply to their organization, and developing guiding principles for their company to adhere to.” (Gordon, D. K. ,2011).
This essay is going to explain how the introduction and implementation of total quality management (TQM) and ISO 9000 could improve the performance of Pars Food Ltd. Pars’ long term objectives include; becoming a PLC, reducing operation costs, improving the quality of products and services and becoming more environmentally and ethically sustainable. The potential implementation of these marketing strategies could help Pars food to achieve their objectives whilst increasing their market share and profitability most importantly. Total quality is a long term management approach which involves the improvement of quality, services, people, processes and environments in order to maximise an organisations competitiveness.
One of Memorial Hospital major concern is to keep cost down. Keeping cost to a minimum will affect the need of obtaining and maintaining quality equipment. The hospital staff doesn’t believe that cutting corners on equipment will lead to quality healthcare service. One of TQM measures is the responsibility for quality. Management can incorporate this measure into their system and still keep the integrity of the operation of providing quality care without any compromise. Having the proper tools needed to conduct the services needed in the health profession should not be a issue of question so such an investment is needed in the healthcare field in order to keep patients loyal and attract new clients. “Organizations that embrace TQM have realized that everyone must accept responsibility, from the company CEO to the person who cleans the parking lot” (Vonderembse, 2013, p.4.4). Quality performance will ensure that the level of care and equipment will not be compromised and such a move will raise the bar towards the quality of care. If Castle Nursing Home implements these, it would help: Cover all functions and include all people within the organization. Examine all costs incurred. Develop policies and procedures that support quality. Meet needs and expectations of customers and Develop a climate of continuous improvement within the organization.
While walking with my colleague, I explain “TQM is about fixing the ‘it’ before it breaks, not after the ‘it’ has broken, whatever that ‘it’ may be. It’s about avoiding errors in the first place. TQM is about working with each other, building commitment to quality and it is going to take a hospital-wide involvement to implement and be successful at. It’s a holistic philosophy where we have to work to pull all the pieces together to increase patient satisfaction and quality of care and integrate the philosophy into our daily activities. Plus, with healthcare reform initiatives and the major focus being on quality and care, we can’t afford for this not to work. TQM is a continuous process. It’s not going to be easy or quick, but if we can get everyone working together on this, the payoff will be well worth the effort.”

Quality management is an act that monitor all activities that needed to maintain and sustain high quality output, continuous improvement of process and product to a desire level of excellence in order to create customer satisfaction (Flynn, Schroeder, & Sakakibara, 1994, p. 342). Nowadays, increase in globalization and international trade had led to the increase of competition in the global market. The increase of competition had forced companies to focus on the concept of quality in their business and discover that effective quality management can increase their competitive advantage in the global market (Anderson, Rungtusanatham, & Schroeder, 1994).
The concept of quality assurance has been around a while, however, the major urge to improve it has only been around the past few years. According to Stanhope & Lancaster (2014), quality assurance (QA) is one of the evaluative steps in the nursing process. It uses analytic methods to monitor and detect errors in client standards of safety and care. Another evaluative step in the nursing process is quality improvement (QI). QI evaluates evidence-based practice and analyzed information in order to make improvements in quality healthcare. Total quality management (TQM) is a philosophy that focuses on client satisfaction, teamwork, and continuous quality improvement (CQI). Outcomes of quality healthcare are improved due to TQM.

Implementation of excellent quality comes with a cost. The company must decide if it is really worth compromising the quality for revenue. If the quality costs exceeds the expected revenue of the company then the company must abandon implementing quality control mechanism. If otherwise, the quality would contribute to the product value and hence the revenue.
