The English Colonies diversified greatly in their social surroundings throughout the Northern and Southern territories due to the differences in economic productivity, infant mortality, and marriage. The economies of the colonies widely differed from North to South. Southern colonies that included the Chesapeake colony especially, had the large scale farm as the main backbone for profit. Soil was rich and the temperature change was not as rampant as the North. Sugar and Tobacco demand in Europe allowed much of these large farms to expand and become extremely common in the South. Poor soil quality in the North pushed colonists to do lumber, furs, and fishing to stimulate their economy. Soil and weather allowed these colonies to have these stark
The three colonies all wanted to make money but they had to go about it in different ways. This was mainly due to what they had available. The New England Colonies were mainly agricultural farmers. With all the water reservoirs like Cape Cod there were plenty of fish so lots of people became fishermen. There were a lot of lumberjacks to cut down trees and export them to England. The Middle Colonies were extremely different because they set up extensive cosmopolitan cities reminiscent of New York. They had many specialists like doctors, lawyers, accountants, and teachers. They traded a lot with in North America and occasionally overseas. The Southern Colonies primarily depended on cotton and tobacco plantations. As the plantations grew they had to employ black slaves. The plantations were fully self contained with their own blacksmith, teachers and professionals. So there were no big cities or towns. The main plantations traded directly with Europe via the Mississippi. The three colonies all made money differently with their diverse professions and traders.
Colonies, colonies, we all should know that a colony is a region of land that is under the political control of another country. According to the passage, "the colonies began with the founding of Jamestown until the beginning of the Revolutionary War." The author explains, that there is are 13 colonies divided into three groups, Northern, southern and middle. The reason for this is that they all have idiosyncratic backgrounds. The New England (Northern), Southern, and Middle colonies are different, particularly in terms of land, labor, religion, native relations, and etc. The colonies, although they were all British they had some similarities, but mainly they had differences.
We are going to start discussing the economic aspect of both colonies, it is important to note that the economic activities and trade of each colony depended on the environment in which the settlers lived. Geography and climate were important factors that impacted the economic and commercial activities between New England colonies and Southern colonies because these depended on the environment.
The North and the South emerged as two distinctly different sides during the antebellum period. The major differences that emerged during this time revolved around geography/climate, transportation, society and economy. Under these categories involve population, industry and culture. These differences are what shaped each region during this time period.
The economy of the Chesapeake and New England were both directly affected by their geographical locations and surroundings. The Chesapeake colonies were very rich and fertile in soil, which allowed them to develop an agricultural-based economy; whereas, the New England colonies were
In this paper I will discuss the differences between the Southern colony and the New England colony and how each labor systems worked. The Southern and Northern colonies differences were obvious in their regions. The differences that I will discuss will be the religious choices, governing, and economy. I will compare the many beliefs on how things were to be governed and who made those decisions for the good of the colony and their economic status. Religion: There were four original colonies of New England: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
The north was different from the south in many ways because their geography, society, and transportation were different from each other. They had different kind of weathers and different kind of people living there.
During the Antebellum period the south was pretty different from the north. In the south most were supporters of the Democrats. Many of them believed in slavery and wanted a small, state run government. Unlike the whig party, which wanted a government that could intervene and help the economy when necessary, they did not want the goernment to intervene in state matters. They wanted individual rights and mainly didn't want the government intervening when it came to slavery because their economy depended on it.
Transportation was a big difference in the north and south. The north depended on transportation to transport goods from factory to stores or houses. The north had a complex system of railroads that were perfect for quick, easy transportation. Canals also sprung up, being another fast way of transportation. The largest Canal being 363 miles long!
For many years the North and the South tried to live in harmony even though they had opposing views. The North was slowly growing a strong hate for slavery while the South strongly depended on it. So for years they try to avoided confrontation, but the question of slavery still threatened to divide them. You see this in the Missouri Compromise – Maine would enter as a free state and Missouri would enter as a slave state, but in the rest of
Life in the North was different from life in the south. The first area was Transportation. The second area was Society. The last area was Economy.
Introduction: The North and South emerged as two distinct regions because they had various differences. These differences included the geography, population, economy, and transportation (technology) systems of each region. The North was very distinct from the South for many reasons, but the biggest one was the economy and type of labor used. In the North, everyone was paid to some degree, however, in the South there were many slaves used as labor.
I read the novel North and South. This book was written by the author John Jakes. It was published in 1892 in New York. I believe the friendships portrayed in this book gave a great demonstration of the North and South to the reader.
The stark differences between the North and the South surface on a myriad of occasions throughout the novel, and can incontrovertibly be argued as some of the main causes of the war. Fremantle, for example, is an Englishman who shadows Longstreet. As he tries to reason the causes of the war and how they fit into the experiment of democracy in the United States, he cogitates, “The North has those bloody cities and a thousand religions and the only aristocracy is the aristocracy of wealth. The Northerner doesn’t give a damn for tradition, or breeding, or the Old Country. He hates the Old Country…. In the South…by and large, they were all the same nationality, same religion, same customs.” (121). In stating that the war is in fact actually about all of these differences, he contemplates the sentiment of the South, comparing it to the willingness Americans had once had to leave Europe, contrasting it with the rising changes of the North. However, the changes and disunity that Englishman Freemantle observed were not the only reasons for the tension between the two areas. Each geographic region had vastly different economic regions. Being that the North (Union) was about twice in size of the South (Confederacy), size and population resulted in mottled economical structure. The Union’s diverse economy was comprised of factories and manufacturing bases, while the Confederates maintained their flourishing cotton agriculture. Because of this, arms for the war were predominantly
In the United States, the North and South regions have great differences. As the North and South kept growing the conflict between the two also kept growing. One of the major conflicts between the North and South was The Kansas-Nebraska act. The Kansas-Nebraska act gave the right to Kansas to vote to be a free state or slave state. The day Kansas got the right to vote, residents from Missouri crossed over to Kansas to vote so Kansas would become a slave state. This started to conflict between the North and the South but also started a conflict between Kansas and Missouri. This conflict is what started the Civil War in 1861 due to the feud between Kansas and Missouri. The other major differences between the North and South are transportation, society, geography and economy.
