After reading these articles I understand the pros and cons of the role of unions as well as the perspective on last weeks’ recall election in Wisconsin. I think that in any situation there will always be people who see the positives and negatives. Based on the information from these articles I would have to say that I agree with the cons about unions in America. Unions are a way to give workers a stronger voice, but in many situations the workers excessively use their power for the wrong reasons. For example, teachers’ unions have argued that public schools are failing because they are underfunded. The teachers’ solution is to be given more money so they can fix the problem. Organized labor began to rise as the business tycoons and big business owners, "…took advantage of this lawless environment to build fortunes, destroy reputations, exploit both workers and the environment, and gouge consumers" (Shi &Tindall 620). Such acts by the business tycoons prompted many workers to demand higher wages, better working hours, and safer working conditions. As the turn of the 20th Century approached, factories started emerging, and technological innovations since, "The U.S. patents office, which had recorded only 276 inventions during the 1790's, registered almost 250,000 new patents in the 1890's" (Shi &Tindall 622). The inventions led to the advancement of machines in factories as they reduced labor costs, lowered the production costs of certain goods, and essentially creating a widespread mass production of goods. As most individuals began to notice, unfairness among their workplace, they included themselves in certain labor unions including the Knights of Labor (KOL), Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and the American Federation of Labor (AFL). All three groups had different beliefs: the Knights of Labor included all members whether skilled or unskilled in their group; the AFL rejected Capitalism and focused on working conditions—as they were successful in organized labor; and lastly, the IWW strived for strong industrial unions or Unionism.

These drawbacks to labor unions include but are not limited to: decline in competitive advantage for American companies, corruption, potential decrease in productivity, possible reduction in employee motivation, and increased inefficiencies.
Labor Unions have had an effect of American history as well as world-wide history from the time they became popular. Following WWII Americans were predominantly pro-labor, however, as time went on union’s credibility fell short of perfect. Union strikes proved to be bothersome to both the general public and company. Unions were also suppressing to employees through fraud and lack of worker rights (in earlier years, before Acts were passed). Although Union labor had its shortcomings, this type of labor is noted to be the most productive and economically beneficial. With both sides shown, I feel Unions will again thrive in the future with a few key adjustments made.

The role of unions and their importance has changed over the years. A mixture of poor wages, high unemployment, non-existent benefits and insignificant professional stability amongst the more youthful era makes a ready demographic for restoration. The younger era is the slightest unionized section of our general public today by a long shot. Unions are important in today’s society because checks and balances are necessary entities in business and government, so if CEOs are just focusing on themselves and profits, unions are a necessary check to all that corporate power. Today and in the future, labor unions will continue to play an important role in our country 's work force and the quality of life for working families.
Although the 19th century brought about many injunctions and antitrust laws prohibiting union activity, the early 20th century would bring hope to laborers and ultimately be known as the labor’s greatest strides toward unification and legal protection. One of the first examples of progress was during World War I. Due to so much unrest between the managers and laborers, a widespread of fear engulfed the United States. Most were afraid that a shutdown of the railroads was imminent which would create a threat to national security. In 1916, the government decided to intervene and take control of the railroads (Federal Possession and Control Act) in the event a strike was initiated. This action would allow soldiers to step in and replace any striking workers. This became one of the first legislation to construct some sort of union but ended in 1920 and the railroads were handed back to their owners
Unions do provide a lot of good services to its members, such as higher wages, better hours, more benefits, and safer working conditions. There is a price to pay for these services, though. Every union requires its members to pay dues, whether they are in the form of a percentage of each paycheck, or a flat rate. The money form dues goes towards lobbying politicians to pass union-friendly legislation, or better labor laws. The money also finances officers in the union organization, who are the ones calling the shots, as far as labor negotiations are concerned.
Working is a necessity for life. Everyone has to work in some way to get money so they can live. With work being such a universal thing, there are bound to be some issues with it. Unions have come into question about whether they are necessary or not. In my opinion, unions should stay a part of the workplace. They tend to bring workers together to make their lives better at work. Unions have many ways to get what they want from companies, and negotiating is the most common practice. The main functions of unions are to help organize workers and bargain. With organization, workers can fight for better wages, hours, and conditions.
If unions are that beneficial to workers, why the increasing decline? Several reasons come into play. One issue being, there has been a rapid growth within particular categories, such as women. There are more women currently in the labor force, who are more prone to working sporadically and half the time compared to others. Secondly, there has been a decline in union’s actively engaging new members, as well as their being a steady increase in the employer’s unwillingness to take part in unionization attempts. Additionally, because society has shifted from unionized corporations with a manufacturing-based economy to a service-based economy has made it more difficult to unionize. Although, there have been uncontrollable and controllable forces that have led to the decreasing popularity of unions, they have still managed to make up for it in vital areas, such as wages, benefits, working conditions, and others. Whether or not individuals view labor unions as positive or negative organizations, they will always matter.
The rise of capitalism as the dominant economic system in the United States made the rise of unions inevitable; given the natural division between those with capital that control the means of production, and labor, who is treated simply as another factor of production (Hodson & Sullivan, 2008). While labor unions have made significant improvements to the working environment, with the regulation of safety, environment, labor and wage; labor unions have also contributed to the decline of U.S. dominance in industries like steel, automotive, education and airlines. In today’s global economy, can labor unions continue to be a force for good in the United States, or have they become harmful institutions?
My own reflections on Unions, I come from a family of union works, my mother was a union representative. My son, sister and her husband are in the hospitality union which is SEIU Union. And my husband who tried to organize a union where he was employed at that time. As I speak, my sister just went back to work, because they were in contract negotiations with her place of employment. I was in the most powerful union of all to me the Teamsters, now that I have, change careers into management, when I was employed at University of Illinois.as an retail supervisor. I was not eligible to join the union. Therefore, I had to learn the guide line of this big humongous book ;( to me. About SEIU Union laws. An extra note while I was there they did strike. The question is? why labor unions are formed?
In conclusion, I have found that I both agree and disagree with labor unions. I think they can be very beneficial but also very limiting. I think that the right to work movement is a great opportunity for a lot of workers and businesses to be able to escape some of the cons of unions. Labor unions can be tough but they can be helpful, because of them people can more easily speak out about issues as a group rather than individually, but because of some issues in each union, the right to work movement was created as a
Though, unions are declining, the role of union have evolved over time. Now, it is more common to view unions’ primary role as collective bargaining, which is the product of the economic decision and making process with unionism of the private sector. A long time ago, Union was seen as the shield that protects American workers against some of the abusive employers. Many public sector employees have unionized. However, the National Labor Relations Act was designed for the private sector. Despite that, union has become a model for most public sector collective bargaining right. Regardless of the success that Unions have with collective bargaining in the private sector, there are still a few who are opposed collective bargaining in the public sector. Of course, there are some differences between the public and private sectors.

The act allows employees of a company the right to form a union and have the union organization represent them through collective bargaining. Collective bargaining is the process of negotiation between both parties; Union representatives and a corporation, with the purpose of reaching an agreement for the best interests of employees and the corporation. In the negotiation process the attempt is to establish primary factors of importance which are advantages the union fights for and ultimately provide for its stakeholders that would otherwise not have
Due to the fear of often losing their jobs, more workers have decided to fight on their own and accept the terms that their present employer hands over to them. It is hence not surprising that the workers are willing to tolerate the poor treatment and low wages so that they can retain their jobs. Moreover, fewer workers are willing to join the labour unions with the fear of being victimized by their prospective employers. Although belonging to a labour union is advantageous to an employee, they are still subject to terms spelt out by their employers and they have the option of quitting their jobs. Some of the private companies prefer to deal with employees who are free from any
