There are many people in this world that embody the characteristics of leadership. Whether they are known by many people or just a friend of yours, anyone can be a leader and show leadership characteristics. Although not everyone can be a leader all the time/be positive towards life. Before Frederick Douglass decided to escape slavery and show leadership to other slaves, he was reading a book about freedom that you would think would motivate him before it brings him down but it did just the opposite. When Douglass read that book it made him think about how sad his position in life was. Then he turned his life around, even in the times when people don’t think they can get out of their positon and be a leader they do.

Fredrick Douglass is an extremely determined person with an unceasing enthusiasm to learn. He fixates goals and then tries to achieve them. He also is optimistic, for when things traverse downhill, he decides not to give up. He appreciates what is at his disposal rather than despair about things which he cannot get. For instance, when he used to be sent on errands, he always took his book with, and by completing one part of his errand quickly, he found time to get a lesson before he returned. He says “In learning to read, I owe almost as much to the bitter opposition of my master, as to the kindly aid of my mistress. I acknowledge the benefit of both.” which attests to the above statement.
A leader is described as a person who guides or directs a group, but I believe it is so much more than that. A leader is a person that inspires people to do good and does good themselves. Due to my extensive volunteer work, I believe that I qualify as a fairly good leader. My outstanding leadership is shown clearly in my participation in community theatre. I have participated in the theatre community at Top Hat Productions, a theatre company located near me, for a couple years. My leadership in this company is shown through my ability to get people involved and my own participation.
Every con has its pro. In the same way that a student may not be good in math, but uses his/her talent to excel in English, Fredrick Douglass turned his suffering and disadvantages into motivations. Throughout the novel, three main points indicated the weaknesses behind his strengths: being denied the right to read, being beaten without mercy, and being snatched away from his loved family and friends.
There was a “striking affinity” between Frederick Douglass’ ideals about African American creativity and discovering one’s self and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s persistence on self-sufficiency and disapproval of authority and laws (945). Douglass’ personal story is important for all readers because his, “books and essays serve as the foundation for the African American literary tradition” (945). This is important because during the mid-1800s there weren’t very many writings from African Americans and this became an example that many authors used in their works. After Douglass escaped from slavery, he lectured about the, “horrific impact on black people” as well as slavery’s, “damaging effects on the white population in the south” (945). He explained that slavery destroyed families, exploited women, damaged the “hearts and minds” as well as the “souls and bodies” of adults and children (945). Furthermore, because of the unlimited power that white slave owners had, they began to view themselves in a distorted way which violated, “the best instincts and impulses of their human nature” (945).
It is easy to presume that that person is in the position they are in because of money, connections or an extraordinary intellect. We may suppose that any adversity or problems that this type of person has encountered are on another level to those that we face. Perhaps we don't imagine that there were private obstacles to overcome, personality traits that needed adjustment or adaptation, that private insecurities or personal failings had to be surmounted. It is simplest to assume that the role of leadership was cut out for him/her alone. More often than not, one imagines that the "leader" in an individual emerges early on in life, apparent from an early age: a bright child with above average intelligence, active in all walks of life, successful in anything that he puts his/her hand to, popular with peers and admired by elders. But nothing is that simple.
I believe that leadership is largely a team effort rather than a one-person dictatorship. One area where I have displayed this form of leadership is on the soccer field. I have played the sport for four years now and have made lifelong connections with my fellow teammates through our intense sense of camaraderie. I know that I can depend on my teammates and they can depend on me during our games or just in the community in general because we have such a deep bond from working together to achieve a common goal. Another example of leadership is, whenever I am part of a group project, I ensure that everyone stays focused and on task and knows what exactly it is they are doing to contribute to the group. I am the one who helps others with any problems they may encounter and who checks behind everyone else’s work because I want to make sure that everything is done accordingly. My fellow classmates often come to me when they need extra help with their schoolwork or with understanding a new concept. I also demonstrate excellent academic initiative. I go out of my way to further research concepts mentioned in class when I get home so that I can have a full understanding of every topic. The above quote embodies how I feel about leadership. Not only do leaders work well with others they also take an initiative to aid others to persevere. Leadership is one of four acceptance pillars of the National Honor Society. Leaders are expected to display commitment to learning, venture to make right choices and work for the welfare of others. I perceive that leadership makes up the other pillars of National Honor Society; character, service, and scholarship. I have always possessed leadership characteristics. Most recently I have showcased leadership through my school and altruistic volunteer work.
What is leadership? Are individuals destined to lead or are they mentored into it? Leadership can be taught and seen by hard work, mentoring and a specific mind set, but the great leaders are born with the leadership quality. Leadership is taken from hard work. If one individual sees another individual working hard than the other will try and help the fact and get the job done with more efficiency by he also trying his hardest. It has a conformity affect. If most people in the group work hard and keep their eyes on the prize than good things will happen. Leadership could have been taught by the worker that began the domino affect with the conformity of the group. He could have a very humble father that taught him that hard work pays bills. Therefore if he works to his abilities than the worker will receive riches. If a worker only half-asses it than he will not move up the chain of life. They are leaders of new ideas, innovators, "thinkers" and "doers" - the people of tomorrow. Time and time again, leadership is demonstrated in literature for audiences of all ages, genders, beliefs, orientations, and socioeconomic statuses. But, we never really see the true leadership of a character until we connect to them in some way. Both Harriet Tubman, from Harriet Tubman: Guide to Freedom, and Mrs. Jones from Thank You, Ma'am, both show great leadership in these stories.
Am sure anyone could accomplish just about anything in life that they set out to accomplish, by just trying. Nevertheless, understand that life will always throw you a curve, just continue to strive for accomplishing a goal and being persistent to never give up until you reach your goal. Nothing is impossible, Douglass surely proved that, if you set your sight on something that you’re wanting to obtain you can accomplish it.
Leadership is something that people are born with. It is an inherent charm and it doesn’t hide even if you want to hide it. There is a leader amongst us and he or she is the one that leads other people to great things by inspiring and motivating people to do good deeds. Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. Being able to lead a group or someone is a very powerful action. Being a leader in general is very powerful. Leadership is an art that is painted, sculpted, and displayed in all sorts of ways. There are many different styles of leadership that correspond with different tasks. From transformational leadership to laissez-faire leadership, there are various styles throughout the continuum. A transformational leader is one of the best, more successful leadership style. When going down the continuum, the leadership styles only become less effective. Everyone also falls in distinctive categories when it comes to leading others. The leadership style that is displayed depends on the person leading and those who are being led along with the task.
We see leaders around us everywhere. Regardless of what the profession or expertise is, or what sort of an institution there is, leaders are required. There are many leadership characteristics that come into play. In other words, not everyone has what it takes to be a good leader. Surely, in school all of us are taught things like team work and good leadership skills, leadership itself falls under a huge category. There are many models of leadership present that serve to analyze and assess how much of the leadership qualities a person has in them.

I firmly believe that even though individuals can be groomed and trained to be leaders, however some leaders could motivate and influence individuals around them more effectively/easily then others and direct an organization into a coherent and cohesive way in order to accomplish objectives and targets.
