Imagine if you had to restart your life, new shelter, new job, new lifestyle. Well locals or people in the Philippines had to restart their life when an earthquake with an magnitude of 7.1 hit the country and destroyed people’s lives. The earthquake had a devastating 7.1 magnitude. The earthquake hit the Philippines on October 15th, 2013. The likely culprit of the earthquake was the East Bohol Fault because the two tectonic plates were sliding against each other and the creates an earthquake. Sadly, earthquake killed more than 90 people. Ports, schools, and airports were damaged. A hospital collapsed then that lead to a killing of 18 people. Children were also injured at sports complexes because people rushed the exits when the the ground started to shake. Lastly, 5 people were killed in a landslide that was triggered from the earthquake. What really matters though is how people respond to the …show more content…
One example, Children of Sto. Nino Foundation, the Tupas Chapter foundation, and other people from other countries donated money to give financial assistance to people in need.(Doc B) On December 26, 2013, the IFRC issued a revised emergency appeal seeking 8.5 million US dollars to enable the Philippine Red Cross to assist 20,000 families for 16 months. The response to the appeal has been slow, but they have still collected 2.3 million us dollars to assist 1,200 families.(Doc A) An organization from Cebu, named Bangon, donated tons and tons of pounds of food to people in the Philippines.(Doc B) The reason the organization knew to donate food because they heard about the earthquake, and people in the Philippines seeked help from other countries. It’s crazy how these people who are going through such a hard time are getting out and gathering so many supplies. There getting help from others and and then they’re putting those goods to good for
California’s unique geography as a state makes it a very appealing place to call home. From the odd east to west transverse San Gabriel mountain ranges of the Los Angeles Basin, to the bumpy coastal ranges of the Bay Area, any person can find a compatible topographic terrain to their liking. California may seem to be the perfect place to live with its ideal climate and extensive geographic features. However, due to California’s location over the shifting continental plates, coupled with its enormous and also multiple faults, at any time this great state can fall victim to a seismic disaster. After examining evidence from both Rong-Gong Lin’s II Los Angeles Times article of April 18, 2016 and the NOVA videos Killer Quake ( 2006), Earthquake (2007), as well as Geologic Journey II – Episode 3 (The Pacific Rim: Americas) – Part 3 (San Francisco) and The Great San Francisco Earthquake (American Experience ~ 2005), one can take a comparative account of the three major earthquakes of California’s past. Although each earthquake was very devastating on is own; the Great Quake 0f 1906, the Loma Prieta quake of 1989, and the NorthRidge quake of 1994 each amounted to an extensive forfeiture of property and life. Each of these earthquakes created much suffering and loss. It is imperative for each citizen of this great state to understand the damage that a California quake can actually do and be prepared; for the threat of one always looms.
The earthquake that rocked Kobe, Japan in 1995 veered Japanese culture into another direction in regard to mental healthcare. Remembered as the Great Hanshin Earthquake, the 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck # regions and claimed the lives of 6,400 (Baba et al.,1996). At least 55,000 people were placed in shelters, and among them included mothers, children, the elderly, and disabled (Baba et al.,1996). The demographics mentioned are specified because of research suggesting each group had pre-existing conditions or heightened stress that became exacerbated due to disaster-related trauma. As emotional suffering became so vast, many in positions of power could not overlook the emotional devastation caused by the disaster. However, they continued
This land assessment will recommend which community would be the best and safest place to live. Hazard City is made of up of five communities. Riverside is a mobile home community with most of the current homes located upon the sandy soils of the floodplain. Downtown consists nearly of one-to-three story buildings constructed of unreinforced brick and masonry. Ralston contains mostly large wood-framed, single family, Victorian-style homes built in the late 1800's. Hickory Estates contains of single-family, multi-story, wood-frame homes that were all built before World War II. Walnut Heights is a planned, gated residential community of single-family homes founded in 1981.
On April 30, 2015, a volcano in Chile called Calbuco erupted for the third time in eight days. Calbuco is located near the town of Puerto Montt. One witness, Gregorio Billikopf, said that this eruption was not as dramatic as the previous eruptions that occurred on April 22 and 23. Others have also observed that the most recent eruption of Calbuco was smaller than the earlier eruptions. About 1,500 people were evacuated is what Deputy Interior Minister Mahmud Aleuy said. Due to the steady decrease of seismic activity, the agency of geology in Chile warned of the chance of a third eruption. Authorities in Chile have been keeping people away from a 12 mile exclusion zone surrounding the volcano. In the previous week 4,400 residents were evacuated with assistance from police and military. Ash from the second eruption spread all the way to Argentina. Not all evacuations were for humans though, some included animals. In some places, the volcanic debris has reached up to almost 2 feet high. New information claims that ash in the air could reach an altitude of 12,000 feet. Last week, the town of Ensenada was blanketed in ash and the cities of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas were under a red alert.
In 2010, an earthquake occurred that scared ten million lives of men, women, and children. However, the earthquake
Arch C. Johnston and Eugene S. Schweig researched the New Madrid seismic activities of 1811-1812 and concluded that: The first earthquake was likely caused by slippage along a fault within the Blytheville arch and along the Bootheel fault. The length of the two reactivated fault segments was around 140 kilometers (deBoer & Sanders, n.d., p. 117-119). Johnston and Schweig believe the second earthquake was likely due to the breakup of the New Madrid fault that runs northeast to southwest, close to New Madrid. The slippage was estimated to be about 8 meters (deBoer & Sanders, n.d., p. 117-119) They believe the third earthquake was likely due to the rupturing of the Reelfoot fault, where the slippage was as much as 10 meters (deBoer & Sanders,
The Philippians responded by getting donations from the Red Cross because “The Philippine Red Cross has provided at least 10,000 families with essential household items” (Doc
In what season did the earthquake of 62 CE occur? The earthquake of 62 CE occurred around noon on a winter’s day.
Reactions to Natural Disasters How would you feel if a natural disaster hit your city, and everything in it was destroyed? For people in the Philippines, this is exactly what is happening. A deadly magnitude of a 7.1 earthquake struck the Central Philippines on a National Holiday and was the strongest to strike in the last 23 years (Background Essay ). 43,000 people experienced this severe shaking and everything was destroyed (Background Essay). A few years before in 1990 a magnitude of 6 occurred on the Fault line and $154 million in damage and injured about 300 people in result.
California is suspected of experiencing a killer quake, one that reaches the magnitude of 7.5. However, it is impossible to predict an earthquake. The Puente Hills Fault is one of the most dangerous “sleeping monsters” (if it were to) create an earthquake. It is located in the Los Angeles basin, where it can cause approximately 45 seconds of rippling instead of just 7 seconds because it is on softer ground, cause thousands of deaths, and potentially destroy the city of Los Angeles.
Researchers have found that if a 9.0 magnitude earthquake strikes the U.S’s california there is a great chance that a tsunami will occur. If that happens it will cost over 70 billion dollars to repair. People around that area would only have a 15 minute notice to flee. It could destroy roads, power lines, bridges, towns, and so much more. Over 100,00 people would die at an estimate. There has been two major earthquakes. One of the earthquakes was on a sunday and at a 6.8 magnitude and the other one in 2005 was at a 7.0 magnitude. In california there has been six earthquakes over a 7.0 magnitude or greater in the past 100 years. Scientists have focused on the 9.0 earthquake and the tsunami in japan in
In the article there were many interviews about the victims of the earthquake. The earthquake killed thousands of people. When the earthquake occurred the people of Mexico could feel the ground shaking and were scared. They took cover and then saw all of the damage. The city hall collapsed during the earthquake as well. All of the natives were shocked to see the damage and did not have the money to repair. A lot of allies of Mexico are helping them get through the tragedy. The police are still searching for
Another human factor is the earthquake mitigation through education and community awareness. Schemes such as the one in Sichuan, China helped to save thousands of lives. The weekly intervals of training in case of an earthquake, educated children and adults of what to do when the quake struck. Evacuation schemes such as the window slides or hiding under tables was reported to have saved thousands when the magnitude 8.0 hit the area in 2008. However, some were not saved due to their unwillingness to move and evacuate the area. Some people of the village, notably the poorer and elderly refused to leave as they didn’t want to leave all they owned behind.
There is a network or underwater seismic sensors that will be deployed off of Mexico’s Pacific coast. The network will focus an area called the Guerrero Gap, and it can track deformation in the seafloor and “silent slips.” This technology could eventually help reduce the human risks of earthquakes and tsunamis, and could help save lives.
The book that I read about is Earthquake Alert! It’s about how earthquakes are made and how people in the past thought that the world made giant animals. Another theory was, the giant animals shook the earth to make earthquakes. This book taught me about the Earths tectonic plates. There are many different plates like the transform plate, the convergent plate, and divergent plate does are the plates that the book taught me about. The people in the past made another story called quake myths the story is that there was a special giant catfish it liked to play jokes. The catfish only be controlled by a secret in god the god was called, Kashima when she was not paying the special catfish wriggled causing earthquakes to
