The Marcellus Shale an area in America that spans over Southern New York, a huge part of Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, West Virginia, parts of Maryland and Virginia. There are a few other areas here in America such as Texas that natural gas can be found, but Marcellus Shale is the winner. It’s the underground landmine a means for the United States of America to not be so dependent on overseas oil. Natural gas burns cleaner then that of crude oil. At the rate of U.S. dry natural gas consumption in 2013 of about 27 Trillion cubic feet per year, the United States has enough natural gas to last about 84 years (“US…”). Shale gas is a natural gas that is found deep in the earth’s crust. This type of natural gas usually forms in shale deposits and can be released with a drilling technique known as fracking. Shale gas has become the most important source of natural gas in the United States. Scientist and researchers have always known of shale gas, but none have had the technologies to reach it till now. In early 2000, shale gas compensated for one percent of the United States supply of natural gas resources, but by 2010, shale gas accounted for over twenty percent of the United States supply of natural gas.

Although founded recently in 1989 in Alberta Canada, Canadian Natural has quickly grown into one of the world’s largest natural gas producers. Along with natural gas, they also process and produce crude oil as well as oil sands both nationally and internationally. Canadian Natural also produces and refines gas and oil that is sold for business and homes across Canada as well as across the country through 3rd party clients (Who We Are, 2016).

To use natural gas, all the elements except methane have to be removed. This consequence goes forth in numerous byproducts such as hydrocarbons, sulfur, water vapor , carbon dioxide and even helium and nitrogen.

There are several types of ways natural gas is used to generate electricity. The most basic of which is to use it to boil water to make steam and that steam then turns a turbine. While this style of power generation is more akin to coal burning and nuclear facilities, this type of system can be powered by natural gas. However, as simple as this form of generation might be, it is also fairly inefficient. Only about 33-35% of heat energy generated by burning the natural gas is able to be used to generate electricity. A different way of using heat and pressure to produce electricity is to turn the turbine with the burning natural gas itself in a combustion engine. This method can also be done with oil in a very similar fashion. They do not use a regular four stroke piston setup like your car engine does.

Natural gas is a nonrenewable source of energy that is formed of the fossils of prehistoric organisms. It is one of the three fossil fuels found on Earth, which includes oil and coal and is cleanest of the fossil fuels and provides about fifty-eight percent of the world’s energy (although it is not the cleanest form of energy on the planet). It emits less carbon than oil and coal and can be an answer to climate change, but, like most things, there are some drawbacks. Fracking is a serious issue that not only causes environmental problems, but also health complications in many people. The benefits of natural gas far outweigh the disadvantages that it presents, although the disadvantages are severe.

Natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas provide 24% of the energy used in the United States. Natural gas has fewer impurities than coal and oil, and emits little sulfur dioxide during combustion (Friedland 329). Natural gas is much better for the planet than its alternatives, such as coal, and the boom in this industry has allowed for the United States to be able to rely less on it. According to John Wihby, in 2008 coal made up 50% of the United State’s electrical generation, and in 2012 it had dropped to 37%. During these times, natural gas made up roughly 20% to about 30%

Propane is a nonrenewable source that takes millions of years to create. Which means it’s at the bottom of our timeline on page three. Over time plants and animals decay in layers. The soil surrounding the decayed plants and animals turn into rock. The rock is then pressurized and heated. Eventually it gets so compressed that the organic material turns into natural gas, crude oil, propane, butane etc.

It has also increased the GDP in the United States and is expected to grow even more. It also rose 933 billion dollars in tax revenues for local, state, and federal governments. It will also increase natural gas royalties in the Marcellus region. The average United States consumer of natural gas will expect to save about 926 dollars a year by switching to natural gas. Natural gas will help out many businesses but in the automotive industry it will help them out a lot because then can now produce cars on the assembly-line again because of the recession took a toll on this industry. It will also help UPS out because they can switch to natural gas when it come to their fleets which were using diesel to run.
