There are a number of influences that contribute to the formation of attachments and the differences among individuals. One influence on attachment is the amount of time a caregiver spends with an infant. The amount of time can be affected by the age, health, and social status of the mother. For example, a younger, teenage mother, may return to school in order to complete their education. Returning to school can preoccupy a mother and create a disconnect when an infant’s distress and behaviors are not attended to or ignored. Another example of how the amount of time spent with an infant can be affected is a single-mother or a mother who returns to work within the sensitive time of an infant’s development. During this time, there is most likely little or no contact other than from doctors. Without the contact(s) from caregivers, there is no creation of social engagement and the infant may experience minute meaningful and loving interactions. Environmental factors can also influence the health of the baby. Factors like tetragons, drugs, nutrition, stress, and whether the mother smokes and or consumes alcohol altogether harmfully impact the fetus and infant when born. Already prone to have physical and cognitive dispositions, development of attachment through the five stages may be a bigger obstacle compared to a “normal” baby, especially if the baby is removed from the mother’s care. A second influence on attachment is the quality of care provided. An anxious-resistant attachment or anxious-avoidant attachment can form if caregivers are inconsistent or interactions with infants are harsh or harmful, respectively. An infant born with physical or cognitive irregularities, or even a petulant infant, might be more difficult to soothe, making responding to distress and behaviors a strenuous uphill battle for
