My Coaching Philosophy
Character
I will inspire athletes to demonstrate good character. Sports do not have an influence on one’s character; however, coaches can strongly impact athletes’ character, both negatively and positively. For this reason, I will work to coach in ways that support the growth of athletes’ character and create learning opportunities and situations in which athletes can practice and learn from. As a coach, I will lead by example and demonstrate good character because actions speak louder than words. I will do this by embodying sportsmanship and respecting athletes, opponents, other coaches, and referees. I will also show this to athletes by respecting, caring, and being trustworthy. I will also lead by example by staying

It is my job as a coach to help develop athletes physically, psychologically, and socially while helping them have fun by playing a sport. I will do this by being enthusiastic and having a positive attitude in practice, games, and while not coaching. This cooperative approach to coaching will create a sense of community within the team I coach, and the athletes will feel more welcome to discuss their thoughts, ideas, questions, and concerns with me. Creating this setting and relationships with athletes will only benefit the team by creating a team culture necessary for the well-being and success of high school sports’ teams. Success in sports means accomplishing goals set by the team, not winning. Winning is important, but just striving to win is even more vital toward the success of teams. As a coach, I will also be a motivator for athletes. Athletes will see me come to practice with a positive attitude, displaying my passion. This is the beginning of how I will motivate athletes. Motivation starts with my attitude, and athletes pick up on this. In order to motivate and want to be motivated, there must be a reason, a why? I will use the teams’ goals they will set, in order to motivate them to give their best effort in order to achieve success by reaching their
Sport’s are an aspect of life that affect societies across the globe. Athletics affect everyone's life, whether that be playing the sport, watching games, or hearing about a sporting event. There is a big difference between playing an individual sport and players relying on their own athletic abilities versus a team sport when members of the team rely on their teammates to complete each individual's specific responsibility to reach the team's goal. Team sports bring people together in countless ways, and they teach many life skills for the athletes that participate in them. Some of these skills include communication, teamwork, discipline, work ethic, dedication, leadership, and numerous more that will help them in their personal and work
Describe P1 and Explain M1 four roles and four responsibilities of sports coaches, using examples of coaches from different sports.
Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. For an athlete, motivation can be the difference between waking up at 5:00 a.m. to go for a mile run versus sleeping in. It could be the difference between putting in an extra set of reps in the weight room versus going to the mall with friends. It could be putting in extra time at practice versus going on a date. Motivation is necessary to augment ability. It’s extremely important because one will face tests from fatigue, pain, boredom and outside desires that will challenge the athlete’s focus on becoming the best they can be. Motivation is the center of success, it can be thought of as a tree with the other factors being branches that stem from motivation. It will effect the mental aspects of game preparation, the physical aspects of nutrition, conditioning and sleep. Finally, it will affect the coaching side in terms of training. Some athletes can get through high school and college off size and athleticism.
However, when we talk about youth sports, our main concern is with providing players with a positive, character building experience. Winning is not the only acceptable outcome for youth players, and coaches need to understand this principle. “With a winning philosophy young athletes may lose out on opportunities to develop their skills, to enjoy participation, and to grow socially and emotionally. Well informed coaches realize that success is not equivalent to winning games, and failure is not the same as losing.” (Enhancing Coach-Parent Relationships in Youth Sports, 15)
One of the people in the educational system I find useful are coaches. Coaches always talk about how, “Sports do not make character, they reveal it”. By knowing this I know that the way I overcome difficulties on the field, shows how I will deal with the ups and downs in life. Sports also improve team building skills, communication skills, dedication, hard work, consistency, etc. I find if I improve on those I will be a better person on and off the

The author has had a lifetime of experience with athletics in multiple sports as an athlete, as a coach, and now as an athletic director at a high school. As an athlete that was highly competitive, his mindset was to always work hard and do whatever it took to win. About a year after all of his college eligibility has been completed his good friend took a job at a high school in San Bernardino as a water polo coach and asked him to come out to the pool to teach his boys a few things. The author took on an assistant coaching position from that point on for the next 6 years because he loved teaching the athletes what it was to not only be a competitor but to be a competitor the right way, through hard work and respecting the game. He eventually took over the program and progressed from a coach who wanted to desperately win to a coach that wanted his kids to be successful at everything they attempted to do above all else. That mindset has spilled over into his job as an athletic administrator at a new high school.
What is coaching – “The coach works with the clients to achieve a speedy, increased and sustainable effectiveness in their lives and careers through focused learning. The coach’s sole aim is to work with the client to achieve all of the client’s potential-as defined by the client” The Coaching Manual Starr, J 2008.
Overcoming the fact that one day you will not be able to play your sport is one of the hardest things all athletes must one day go through. It is a fact of the game that one day your eligibility runs out or if you are one of the lucky few who play professionally, your body’s years of health do not last forever. Coaching just to be around the sport and spread the joy that sport gave you for so many years. My coaching philosophy relies extremely heavily on this information. I have always been a person who is passionate about the things I love because I do not believe in not putting your whole heart into something. The most critical component to success in whatever sport you love lies in honoring the game that so many before you loved and excelled at. Excelling and honoring the game means having respect for everyone involved with the sport. Giving respect to your coaches is something I learned from the beginning. Being respectful and having a positive attitude learned at a young age is something completely taken for granted until you have adults who can neither adapt nor be flexible when something does not go their way. Sport is a form of education in that it teaches you similar life lessons that will be useful for far longer than the amount of time that you spend actually playing it.
It is the rare individual who has the exact same style and set of behaviors at work as at home. There are many legitimate reasons for this. When asked why they have different behaviors and actions, people typically respond that work has a completely different environment and calls for adaptations to that environment. There is a supervisor to whom they report, creating a somewhat subservient role. There are also the daily pressures, stressors, deadlines, lack of autonomy and other situations involving low power over which one has very little control. At home, one generally wouldn’t duplicate any of that. It is more of a shared responsibility with a partner and usually more control over the daily, weekly and long term goals and desired
One of the most basic contributing factors to my success, in and out of school, is my participation and volunteering in local sports. My intense involvement in the athletics that the Northside Community established has founded my key leadership skills in my life. In the fall, whether I was reffing or playing on the field, I was always found at Jack Stack Soccer Fields for a majority of the week. In the spring I headed for Garvin field to practice and play baseball. If I wasn’t on the field or enjoying one of my sisters game I always found a way into the concession stands. Announcing the games as best I could from the second floor, I did anything to be involved. Achieving medals, awards, varsity positions, and even captain positions in high school sports, I must always stay true
As a coach of any sport it is important to structure situations to meet the needs of your players.A coach must understand what motivates his athletes because the tactics used to motivate one athlete may be very different from the tactics used to motivate the other teammates. For an example, in basketball one player may perform well
As an inexperienced coach, I know I will have a lot to prepare myself for teaching a large group of the athlete. As for me, I am going to be a coach that wants to win but understand that my players will have to have an education first. I’m going to development my player to be my top priority. I will have my players to have a contract that they will not receive anything lower than a C in any course he/she will take. Why? Because I want them to be smart and have a backup plan in case of failure as in an emergency. As a coach upon victories and defeats as teaching moments to build on self-confidence and positive character traits such as discipline, self-motivation, self-worth, and excitement of being a coach. I want to have a partnership with
Summary: This journal discusses the fine line that coaches have to cross between motivational strategies and self determination. It is a line that has to be looked at by coaches. Self determination is the action a person has that they do on their own will and want to because they believe it is either fun or worth while. The line that is being discussed is how hard to motivate the players and athletes to go harder in their own work and what pushes them instead of pushes them down the wrong path and they get hurt. It shows that a person that shows more self determination and is less controlled has a positive view on sports and the idea of working hard but someone who is constantly pushed to do the work does not. In motivation this journal talks
Little to no empirical data exist on the impact of life coaching and achieving goals (Grant, A. M.). Goals are critical factor when it comes to building long term success in life. This paper will address explaining the questioning strategy used to determine the goals of clients, describe challenges faced in the application of the skills learned and overcoming those challenges, describing client’s reaction to roadmap for success, and recommended resources and continuation of services for the client.
