Inequality between different groups of people within the United States is concerning for many sociologists and society in general. One of the main inequalities throughout the United States is gender inequality. Gender inequity is found in all past and present societies. It takes the form of patriarchy. From the patriarchal point of view, gender inequality can be traced back to biological differences in early societies (“Steven Goldberg on Patriarchy” 2006). This inequality is present in society through many different forms, including job segregation, the gender pay gap, and a great difference in women’s political representation (Joan Acker, 1989).

Women are sometimes more nurturing than some men when it comes to taking care of their family members or children. When a woman becomes pregnant they receive a maternity leave which also puts a hold on their income, making it easier for the man of the household to have a higher paying job (Joan Acker, 1989). Another example, when a child of a family gets sick most of the time the woman is the one to leave work early and stay home with the child. Some job sites have paid maternity leave but then many do not. Women have greater recourse to part-time work so they can combine work and family responsibilities (Joan Acker, 1989). During the older days, women were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law, married women had no property rights, they were not allowed to vote, married women were not even present in the eyes of the law. Whereas in recent decades major strides toward gender equality have been made, sociologists are quick to point out that much remains to be done if inequalities in the United States are ever to be eliminated. Behind much of the inequalities seen in education, the workplace, and politics is sexism, or prejudice and discrimination because of gender. Fundamental to sexism is the assumption that men are superior to women.
Gender inequality imposes a disproportionate burden on women in America, and has led women to experience disparities in health, finance, education, occupation, and other arenas. All around the world today there is a growing message of positivity and acceptance happening between people of all shapes and sizes. Plus sized models and celebrities have risen from the ground as well as minorities rising up in positions never seen before. Throughout history, family structure has not only defined a woman’s role, but also restricted her role in society. While progress has been made in support of women’s liberation from societal views and stigmas, much is left to pursue. In fact, because of women’s role in the family structure, they often receive lower wages, tend to be considered fragile, and in some cases, inferior to men.
Both within and across different cultures we find great consistency in standards of desirable gender-role behavior. Males are expected to be independent, assertive, and competitive; females are expected to be more passive, sensitive, and supportive. These beliefs have changed over the past twenty years within the United States and apparently around the world as well. Therefore, modern society has been trying for the past decade to eliminate all of these stereotypes and double standards, thus creating equality among genders. However, women are not treated equally with men in developing countries because most women take low-level jobs. Last year, I came back to my hometown and visited some local factories. The industry is about producing textiles and the most labor in it were females who live on lower-wage. Even the circumstance changed, the equality between gender is still an issue.
Gender Inequality is when one is perceived or treated differently because of their identified gender. Gender identity is combination of our biological characteristics and social factors. Biological characteristics that symbolize a men is his masculinity, this causes people to think that men are stronger than women and this leads the society to perceive women as being physically weak. The difference in perception and treatment for comparable work is what serves as the basics for gender inequality. Gender Inequality is all around us such as in sports, politics, and the workforce; all members of society have felt the presence of gender inequality in one way or another.
The article discussed the debate between governor Romney and President Obama. The article brought out how both candidates focused on womens' labor as a family issue. The sociology aspect of gender discrimination and workplace inequality is emphasized as well. The author states at the latter part of the article that: “both candidates need to be better informed on the complex factors that produce workplace inequality (Debating Gender Workplace Inequality).”
The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” Apparently, to Jefferson, “equal” is only a term used for wealthy, white, males. 1776 was a period where Africans were enslaved, the poor were discriminated against, and women were their husband’s possessions. Today, in 2016, United States citizens are still made to falsely believe that men and women alike are have equal opportunities. Although progress has been made since the drafting of the constitution, inequality is still prevalent in today’s society. Arguably, the most shocking form of it is the lack of female pay and representation in the workforce.

Historically, laws have opposed women to go to school, access certain jobs, and purchase property. Gender inequality has been experience through culture – honor-killing, sex-selective abortion, and society – occupation, gender roles, and education. The social expectations of men and women differ between cultures that are constructed socially and culturally. These expectations are displayed in roles, and behavior believed both by men and women and their interdependent relationships. Gender inequality can be further understood through the structure of sexism. Discrimination takes place in gender inequality for the reason that men and women are treated on the basis of gender alone (Amjad, R., Ashfaq, M., Kousar, R., Saghir, A., 2010).
Social and institutional contexts for sex discrimination in American life have included the workplace, occupations, wages, income, housing, banking, health care, toys, school, education, employment, consumer marketplace, military, media, religious organizations, and home. Despite a century of social change stimulated by the feminist movement, gender inequality persists.
