Why does Jodie Nicotra (and others) argue that we need a new definition or way of thinking about writing?

With the continuing expansion of technology in today’s society it is unknown what future possibilities lie ahead for the world of social writing. ‘Folksonomy’ (also known as “multi-user tagging” [Nicotra 2009]) is a technological, changing strategy within the Web that organises material. Within her article, ‘”Folksonomy” and the Restructuring of Writing Space’ (2009), author Jodie Nicotra argues for an innovative metaphor for writing that explains the multiple forms within the composition, including images, symbols and music. Her argument supports the necessary need that a new definition of writing must constantly be evolving along with the social world’s advancements as our connections become stronger; as Johndan Johnson-Eilola states, “Writing has always been about making connections: between writer and readers, across time, and through space.” (Johnson-Eilola, J. [1998]).
