1. Summarize the key difference between functionalists and conflict theories of deviance.
In our society, the functionalists and conflict theorists are always hard at work. Their approach to understanding society is very different from each other. A functionalist tends to take a theoretical approach, seeing society as an interlocking structure. This structure is designed to supply the needs of everyone in the society. On the other hand, a conflict theorist looks at a society in a last man standing point of view. They see the society as constantly competing for resources. Therefore, when it comes to deviance, they take two different stances on the situation. When one thinks about

A gender role is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as, “The role or behavior learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms. (English Oxford Living Dictionary)” Common gender roles are pushed upon children from birth such as, boys play with trucks and girls play with dolls. These roles are intermingled in every aspect of society, including: haircuts, clothing, toys, and much more. People are trained up with these gender roles impacting every part of their lives. However, these gender roles go far beyond physical items, and impact emotions as well. People have always had the expectation that men are tougher and more capable then women, who are seen as weaker and more dependent upon others. Gender roles have changed and evolved over time, the division of household labor is based on gender. Traditionally, women stayed home and done most of the domestic household labor, while their male partners worked outside the home to provide the family income. Over the past 30 years more and more women have joined the workforce, but are still responsible for the majority of the household chores. (Gender - Gender Roles And Stereotypes) Things as simple as work are full of gender roles. There are some jobs in which males have preference over women and vise versa. There is almost no part of life that is without gender roles. I believe that they are important, however, I believe that we rely on …show more content…
Many controversies reflect disagreement between those who maintain a traditional definition of the family as a household anchored by a married, heterosexual couple and those who conceive of families more broadly. (Gerson) The once common heterosexual married couple with kids is being replaced by same sex couples, cohabiting couples, and single parents, which are all common place across the United States. Along with these changes comes the gender role changes of both parents working outside of the house, which was very untypical 30-40 years ago. The traditional family is disappearing, “Growing family diversity has prompted analysts to question the empirical accuracy of structural-functional theories. (Gerson)” Single parents are also on the rise, with numbers climbing daily, years ago single parents were only single because of being widowed. Same sex couples were the least common of all, and are still not extremely prominent, however, they are on the rise. Cohabiting households were also very uncommon, many people believed it wrong to live with someone before marriage, therefore people often lived at home or alone until they were married. Same sex couple were simply non existent, and are just now legally able to marry; and they are still facing a lot of controversy over this new found right. What was once so common, is no longer common at all. With time, the idea that a family must consist of a married male and female

According to the Oxford Dictionary, a gender role is defined as the role or behavior learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms. In modern day America, gender roles have been slowly dissolving, but nonetheless is still very much relevant. In our society, women have the capability of doing everything a man can do, but, in the eyes of some, women are still seen as the inferior gender. In general, women are still associated with the responsibilities of taking care of the household and the children. They are also perceived as being fragile and submissive. On the other hand, men are associated with being the primary breadwinner and were viewed as being strong and brave. In most civilizations, these associations have been and
In the United States and in several other countries around the world, many people recognize Wal-Mart for being a great place to shop for any and every household item on the market. However, sociologist find Wal-Mart to be a bit more than just a one-stop shop for everyday items. Sociologist use different perspectives to view society and its functions to evaluate the “why’s” and “what’s” within a society. The two main perspectives or theories used by sociologists to analyze society are macrosociology and microsociology, but more specifically: Functionalism, Conflict Theory, and Symbolic Interactionism.
To begin with, structural functionalism looks at the society as a bundle of a complex system with different parts that work to support the whole. It stipulates that a society is a combination of interrelated components, which work independently, but seek to achieve a common goal, which supports the growth of the whole system. Some of the systems in the society include the government, schools, businesses, and families. In essence, all these different components are fundamental in the society as they serve different functions to develop the society. On the other hand, social conflict theory looks at the society as a system with equal components, but within the endeavors to grow to find themselves in conflicting paths. Thinking about the society, some of the trends lead to conflict among the people living together. For example, ageism,
Internationally the act of deviance is being practiced daily. Sometimes is knowingly and unknowingly, the culture, or the society norms. Right or wrong is a prospective, deviance basically a judgmental call. “It is important to remember that when sociologists use the term deviant they are making a social judgment, never a moral one” (Ferris, Stein page 156.) There are three way that you can view deviance from a sociologist’s standpoint, which are, Functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. All three allow us to take an outlook on how to view the act of deviance.
Gender roles are the roles that men and women are expected to occupy based on their sex. Traditionally, many Western societies have believed that women are more nurturing then men . . . . One way that a woman might engage in the traditional feminine gender role would be to nurture her family by working full-time within the home rather than taking employment outside of the home. (Blackstone)
What is a gender role? It is the behaviors that are considered acceptable for people based on their sex. Throughout history, societies have constructed gender roles. As times change, roles tend to change. In the twenty-first century, American society has created the role of women being great academics and men only being athletes. This has not always been true in the past. Although America is not perfect, it is working on intellectual and physical equality.
1.Compare and contrast the conflict and the functionalist perspective relative to the political system in the United States. Select one current issue such as healthcare, immigration, or one of your choosing and discuss the issue from both perspectives.
Gender roles have played a major part in society. According to the book “The Psyche of Feminism” “A gender role is a theoretical construct in the social sciences that refers to a set of social and behavioral norms that are considered to be socially appropriate
Gender roles, also known as gender stereotypes, are things to be considered appropriate to certain men or women and we are constantly surrounded by them without even realizing it. Cultural gender roles in America have changed over time, from when Disney animated films were first released. Women were only housewives at those times, they were responsible for cooking, cleaning, taking care of their kids, and other housework while the husband took care of
Gender roles describe the normative expectations of a culture group regarding the position that both sexes should hold in society. It also refers to the division of labor tasks, differences in behaviors, preferences, abilities; personalities that society expects of specific genders, (Kaiser, C. R., & Miller, C. T. 2009). It concerns the processes of how gender roles socialize and interact with each other in society as a whole and as an individual, (Stockard & Johnson, 1980; Thomas, 1986). Gender role deals with identity and at times are conceptualized as the acceptance and identification with social roles and behaviors associated with
Conflict Theory vs. Structural Functionalism, this is like a fight between conservative and liberal. Structural Functionalism is a sociological theory that focuses on the structures of society and their functional significance (positive and negative consequences) for other structures (Ritzer, 2013). In another word, Structural Functionalism focuses on hierarchy, high position in the society. The theory is based on the belief that a person who held a high position like doctor or lawyer should get pay more because they make a lot of contribution to society. While on the other side, Conflict Theory “explains social structure and changes in it by arguing that actors pursue their interests in conflict with others and according to their resources for social organization” (COLLINS 414) it goes against with pretty much what Structural Functionalism stand for. With Conflict Theory, people in the society should be paid for how much they contributed, it stands for fairness. Conflict theory examines how society is stratified along class, race and ethnicity, gender, and age categories, and how these categories are linked to the unequal distribution of resources. Patterns of social interaction are inherent with benefits for some and deprivations for others. The goal for conflict theory is to understand the conflict between the advantaged and the disadvantaged while also taking action to reduce inequality (Sociology 662). One of the example the shows the conflict between Conflict Theory
Healthy family systems, such as the traditional family, with a father and mother, was no longer the majority in America, in 2014. “Fewer than half (46%) of U.S. kids younger than 18 years of age are living in a home with two married heterosexual parents in their first marriage. This is a marked change from 1960, when 73% of children fit this description, and 1980, when 61% did.”4
According to Oxford Dictionary, gender roles can be defined as, “the role or behaviour learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms”. Throughout history we can see that cultural
Gender roles play a huge part in society. Gender plays a role in shaping an individuals identify and beliefs. It also helps identify what is masculine and what is feminine. Certain tasks, duties, and jobs are classified by gender. However, gender appropriate behavior should not be enforced in our society for numerous reasons and can be seen on an individual level and be demonstrated by social learning theory and sex segregation.
