Genetically modified crops are both crucial and inevitable in feeding the world’s growing population, but with its potential health threats still unknown, stricter government regulations should be enforced. With the world’s population exponentially increasing, massive hunger in third world countries, and an ever-changing environment due to climate change, conventional crops can no longer sustain the world’s population. The solution to this conundrum lies in the introduction of genetically modified crops: a new breakthrough in the agricultural industry. There may be a tradeoff for the numerous benefits that GMOs grant to the food and farming industries. A documentary brings up a very chilling question: if pest insects die after consuming genetically modified foods, what will happen to humans who consume the food? These fears are a mere tip of the iceberg in a sea of uncertainty. Many professors from prominent universities such as Dr. Peggy Lemaux from University of California Berkeley question the validity of GMOs. (Genetically Modified Foods: Panacea or Poison) There have been many claims that some genetically modified foods are harmful to the health of consumers. For instance, one claim states that since the introduction of GMOs in the year 1996, the number of people with chronic illnesses jumped from seven percent to 13 percent. The Seattle Organic Restaurants Association presented many graphs depicting the rise of specific diseases after the introduction of GMOs to consumers. To interpret the graphs, inflammatory bowel disease, in the span of 8 years, (1996- 2004), saw an increase from 48 cases per 100,000 people to 62 cases per 100,000 people. For chronic constipation, within the same time span, the number of cases per 100,000 people increased from 65 to 160 cases.
