Global warming is the global average temperature increase that was observed over many centuries. Scientist have determined that global warming is a result of the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect occurs when greenhouse gases are present in the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapors, ozone, and chlorofluorocarbons. Most of these gases come from natural sources like evaporation, respiration, volcanic eruptions, and decomposition. Some gases like chlorofluorocarbons are manufactured and have been widely used as refrigerants, propellants (aerosol), and solvents. These gases absorb the sun’s light energy and then reradiate this energy. These gases absorb radiation in a unique way. A CO2 molecule absorbs an incoming infrared photon emitted from the sun. The energy from the photon causes the CO2 molecule to vibrate. Then the molecule gives up this extra energy by emitting another infrared photon. Once the extra energy has been removed by the emitted photon, the carbon dioxide stops vibrating.
The more of these gases present, the more they reradiate the sun’s energy. Because the sun’s energy is reradiated the energy is spread in all directions. This causes the surface temperature to stay in a constant range of temperature. This is the reason the temperature fluctuations are not as drastic as a planet with no and little atmosphere. The greenhouse effect only absorbs about fifty percent of the suns light energy. The rest is
Global warming is the recent and ongoing rise of temperature on a global scale. Over the past century, the Earth's average temperature has risen 1.4°F (Carlowicz, 2010). Global warming is the effect of an excessive amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gasses trap heat from escaping back into space to keep the Earth from freezing, this is called the Greenhouse Effect. An excessive amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap too much heat, thus, causing Earth's temperature to rise.
The greenhouse effect, warming that occurs whenever the atmosphere traps heat from Earth towards space, is the main cause of global warming (NASA, 2016). Gases such as water vapor, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and methane do not respond chemically to drastic changes in temperature, force climate change. One of the reasons for this is because of the deforestation of land for agriculture or industrial needs has increased concentration of green house gases.
Global warming is, in essence, term for the observed century scale rise in the average temperature of the earth’s climate and its related effect.(wiki) The greenhouse effect is mainly because the modern industrial society burned too much coal, oil and natural gas, the fuel combustion after release large amounts of carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is the function of heat absorption and heat insulation. It
The definition given by NASA of global warming is “the average global surface temperature increase from human emissions of greenhouse gases.” On the subject of global warming, the key terms that applies is greenhouse gases. The title “greenhouse gas” comes from the idea that the chemicals that people use to run a greenhouse are also very common in our own atmosphere. A few of these chemicals include carbon dioxide and methane. Global warming is mainly caused by an excessive amount of greenhouse gases and creates environmental problems that affect not only temperatures, but can also disrupt many animal habitats and their way of life.
Global Warming is the idea that greenhouse effects are warming the earth slowly over time. The greenhouse effect, according to Paul G. Hewitt, is the “warming caused by short-wavelength radiant energy from the Sun that easily enters the atmosphere and is absorbed by earth. This energy is then reradiated at longer wavelengths that cannot easily escape Earth’s atmosphere”. The greenhouse effect is not a bad thing because it allows the earth to say warm and not drop to negative temperatures but the pollution that humans have released into the air and get stuck in the atmosphere is the negative effect which why we call them greenhouse gases. Some greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide,
Five gas molecules that attribute to the Greenhouse Effect are: Water Vapour (H2O), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Methane (CH4), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Carbon Dioxide is the most significant of these gases. This is because it is the most common of all the gases and acts as a very effective blanket to keep heat trapped in the Earth’s Atmosphere. Nitrous Oxide and Methane act in similar ways, but to a lesser extent since they aren’t produced as much. Water Vapour is also abundant like Carbon Dioxide, and it increases as the Earth’s temperature does due to the process of evaporation. This
IR radiation excites some of the possible vibrational modes in carbon dioxide. The vibrational absorption spectrum of CO2 is shown below.
Global warming is the name given to the increase in the earth’s surface temperature. It is caused by the collection of greenhouse gases, carbon
Carbon dioxide is an important heat-trapping gas, which is released through human activities. Some examples of human activities that cause the temperature to rise is the burning of fossil fuels, as well as the natural processes such as respiration and volcanic eruption. Carbon dioxide absorbs energy from the sun then releases it into the atmosphere. It causes the earth to be much warmer than it should be. This carbon dioxide can lead to global warming.
What is global warming? Global warming is the increasing of the average temperature near earth’s surface. It is caused mostly by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. (EPA, 2014) Greenhouse gasses are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorocarbons. Some greenhouse gases are
Greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane, absorb energy radiated by the Earth and then send it back into our atmosphere as heat. This is called the greenhouse effect. During the last
One of the main reasons that earth’s temperatures are rising are due to greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are created when humans burn fossil fuels such as coals, natural gases, and oils to produce heat or electricity. These gases are then capable of trapping infrared radiation sent by the sun. Once these
The earth’s climate is predicted to change because human activities are altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases –– primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. The heat-trapping property of these gases is undisputed. Although uncertainty exists about exactly how earth’’s climate responds to these gases, global temperatures are rising. Go to the Emissions section for much more on greenhouse gases.
The greenhouse effect is what allows life on Earth and the atmosphere contains trace gases which are designed to retain heat. The gases that are present in the atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and nitrous oxide. These gases act as a global insulator and help control the Earth’s atmosphere. It all begins with sunlight which is a form of energy that is mostly absorbed by land, oceans, and a portion of the sunlight is reflected back to the atmosphere. Once the earth warms up, it then gives off energy in a different form which is called infrared radiation or electromagnetic radiation. The planet need some of the greenhouse gases because without them the
Greenhouse gases are compounds in the atmosphere that can trap and hold extra heat, which increases the temperature in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases is the cause of the greenhouse effect that leads up to global warming. The greenhouse effect is the trapping of the sun’s warmth in the lower atmosphere that is due to the visible radiation from the sun. The solar radiation reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, then the rest of the sun's energy is absorbed by the oceans and lands which result in the heating of the Earth. After that the heat from the Earth goes towards space, some of the heat is trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouses gases which make the Earth warm enough to tolerate living life. The burning of fossil fuels and land clearing start to increase the number of greenhouse gases which travels into the atmosphere. The result of trapping extra heat cause the Earth’s temperature to rise. Scientist's has proven that the constant increase of heat in the atmosphere is caused by humans. The reason humans are proven guilty for the increase of global warming is because of the amount of carbon that is put into the atmosphere. Carbon is released from burning coal, oil, and gas or cutting down and burning forests. Carbon (CO2) is known as the main source of heat-trapping gas which is mainly responsible for the increase of warming over the years. The removal of trees is another cause of global
