Imagine a staged production of A Christmas Carol set in 1843. See the stage set in the exact time it was written by Charles Dickens. The foggy, crowded streets abuzz with carolers and shoppers, the children staring wide eyed into the shops and bakeries. Hear the bells ringing as a round of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” fills the gaslit streets with joy. As a child, going to see A Christmas Carol was one of my fondest Christmas memories. To witness Scrooge 's’ transformation from a mean, greedy old man to a joyous, loving benefactor always left me smiling and filled me with hope.

In Charles Dickens film and novel A Christmas Carol, he shows his feeling of capitalism and how it affects societal wellness and individuals. The setting of the story is in Victorian England where Ebenezer Scrooge, the main protagonist, lives and dwells. In this time period in England many are poor and few are rich; the economic state of the city is in poor health. Scrooge is one of the scare rich individuals in the land and practices capitalism to a T. Dickens shows how his story is related to economics by using the setting of the story and also the capitalistic ideals of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Throughout the story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, he shares a clear message about wealth or having an abundance of money. The love of money can make mankind greedy and hateful, but wealth can also be used for thoughtful and generous purposes. His view goes hand in hand with the teachings of the Bible. In A Christmas Carol, Scrooge shows that his love of money makes him selfish and full of greed, but once he is shown his past, present, future he realizes his ways and changes them to help others, and he specifically embraces the Cratchit family in many ways.

He is a crippled boy who walks on crutches. Despite his condition Tim is always happy. Concerned, Scrooge asks if Tiny Tim will be alive in the future and the Spirit says it doesn’t look like he will. All gathered at a table, Mrs. Cratchit starts to speak poorly of Scrooge, but toasts to him for Bob’s sake. The spirit then shows him miners and lighthouse men who are happy about Christmas. At Fred’s house, Scrooge’s nephew, are laughing about how Scrooge called Christmas a humbug. Fred says he feels sorry for Scrooge and will keep asking him how he is doing despite that he always answers the same way. At this house Scrooge participates in the Christmas games and is very happy.

In the play, A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley by Israel Horovitz the main character Scrooge is a cold-hearted miser who despises Christmas and people. At the beginning, he shows very different and mean actions towards people and how he is always mad. For example when Scrooge leaves his office's people start to walk past him in a happy and merry mood. But in contrast to the people, Scrooge has a frown and looks unhappy for the Christmas time. Another example is that when his nephew is talking to him he is wanting him to leave so he keeps on repeating the words, “Good Afternoon!” until he leaves. The last example would be that when Cratchit is cold in the office, Scrooge starts yelling at him saying that he would fire him because he was showing he was cold. Scrooge also shows it in his own words by saying “...every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas” on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.”(647).

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, is about a selfish and grouchy man named Ebenezer Scrooge, who dislikes Christmas and charity. In order to fix his undesirable qualities, Scrooge is visited by three spirits, the Spirit of Christmas Past, the Spirit of Christmas Present, and the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come. These three spirits use their differences and similarities to teach Scrooge lessons that would change his egocentric ways. The first Spirit that visits Scrooge is the Spirit of Christmas Past, a peaceful, wise, and kind character.

The past spirit shows Scrooge why he became greedy. “Scrooge falls to the ground, sobbing as he sees a small boy (himself) sitting and weeping bravely alone.” This demonstrates that Scrooge had a rough time growing up with no family to care for him and no Christmas. This also shows that Scrooge was practically abandoned as a child. The spirit of Christmas past showed Scrooge why he doesn’t care for anyone because he didn’t have family or Christmas.

Ebenezer Scrooge was a slave to his desire for wealth would be an understatement. His very innate being was controlled by this one all consuming want, and it infected and ruined every relationship he was ever part of. However, Mr. Scrooge isn’t remembered necessarily for his greed, rather he’s remembered for his drastic change at the end of the novel. In the beginning of the novel when Mr. Scrooge is approached by two gentleman in order to make a Christmas donation Scrooge says that, “If they would rather die they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population”(11). Mr. Scrooge does not care about his fellow people, all he cares about is their cash. He is a foul and nasty character. However after being visited by three ghosts he starts to become a better person. His transition begins when the Ghost of Christmas Past shows him how he alienated his love and how he lost his sister as well. This starts to put a crack in his psyche and is the beginning of his transformation. Next he is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Present who shows him the awful conditions that his employee Bob Cratchit is suffering, no thanks to Scrooge. The fact that Mr. Cratchit’s son Tim may soon die because of him wears away at Scrooge’s facade of heartlessness even more, but the transition isn’t yet complete.
