Greg Hardy was arrested for an assault charge back in 2014. The victim was Nicole Holder. Many people have different opinions on the situation and on Greg Hardy as a person. Nicole was assaulted in Hardy’s house after they went out for drinks at the bar on the night of the incident. Bruises were left on Nicole, However the weapons and evidence was cleaned up the next day. Hardy was unable to give a straight story of what happened that night. In July Hardy went to trial but was believed to have paid off Nicole Holder to disappear for she did not show up to trial, causing the case to be dropped. He was sentenced to be suspended for 10 games but appealed the sentence and won. He only was suspended for 4 games. Hardy is known to make childish remarks and get aggressive with coaches. …show more content…
When you display domestic violence in the public eye you not only damage your image, but the image of the NFL. It is embarrassing to the league when a team player is not acting professional at all times. They are always representing their team, even off the field. He also should be a role model to the younger kids who may look up to him. He was not punished enough for his
Many people believe that professional athletes are “above the law”. In reality, they are human beings like you and me who, no matter what the circumstances, can and will be charged like an average person. The offense of the crime can certainly come into play on whether or not a professional athlete who commits a crime should be allowed to play again.
Though this NFL conduct is in the light, it is unnecessary because the U.S. criminal justice system has the ability to end the professional sports careers of society’s worst criminals. Everyone asked themselves how could such a successful, talented person throw their opportunity away like this? Crimes from the past always catch up and come to light in the justice system. The NFL from now on is trying to prevent incidents like this from happening from making their off field standards stronger, and making consequences stronger that come with
This is something one has to ask themselves when you are talking about domestic violence in sports. I have done a lot of research on this topic now and I believe that they should have a standard punishment for domestic violence. Instead of one guy getting a two game suspension and another guy getting four game suspension they need to come to and agreement and decide how many games it will be for everyone. Now, yes you do have different sports and not all sports are the same length, a baseball season is 162 games a year, a football season is 16 games a year, and a basketball season is 83 games a year. Each sport I believe should have its own suspension but they have to have it the same for every guy in their sport. I think that in baseball you should get suspended for 75 games on your first offense and from then on it should increase. In football I believe you should get suspended for six games for your first offense. In basketball they should get suspended 40 games for a first offense. The reason I say first offense is because if a guy gets suspended for that many games he hurts the team and if it happens more than once than an organization probably will not want to sign you. I think that the NFL has not handled the situation correctly. Ray Rice has still yet to find another job since his incident has occurred, while Greg Hardy served his four game suspension and he is still playing for the Dallas Cowboys right now. The only reason Rice has yet to find another job is because he served his two game suspension and then videos were released and he was suspended for the whole year and his team released him. Yes, I believe that professional sports need to have a harsher punishment, but they need to have a standard of games that you are going to suspend a
This domestic violence happened over a year ago. His old team let him go. The Dallas Cowboys knew of the case. The charges were dismissed this year. Then the pictures of the victim were released, showing the serious injuries she had because of this assault. The pictures caused alto of negative reaction to Hardy and to the Cowboys and the NFL.
The signing of Greg Hardy to the Dallas Cowboys while still on the exempt list is a very odd decision for the manager to make for the team. They probably figured that he would be removed from the list after signing, but after being found guilty for assault on a female by a judge, this commitment to an unable player is peculiar. The amount of pros are heavily overshadowed by how many cons there are for this situation. Any sum of money is a lot for a player that can’t do his job, but $13.1 million dollars is just outlandish. His stats aren’t terrible, 238 tackles and 40 quarterback sacks in his career, still not justifiable enough though. In terms of the Cowboys organization, signing a player who has records of assault surely doesn’t provide
Athlete’s controversy can be devastating for them as player and have a big impact on the fans. It really depends on what happened in the situation, and also how the athlete goes about things. Michael Vick is an NFL quarterback, played for the Atlanta Falcons. He changed the game for a quarterback prior to an incident that he was involved in. He had so much controversy surrounding the dogfighting ring that he had at his house back in 2007.
Former Major League Baseball great and the ex-manager of the Cincinnati Reds expressed disappointments over the decision of Commissioner Rob Manfred to uphold his lifetime ban in the league but admitted that he put the new top official “in a tough spot to make a judgment on my situation.”
Alternative solution one, suspending Hardy for five games, was shown to be the least effective option. It received the lowest numbers when I evaluated the effect it would have on each decision criteria. There would be many disadvantages if Richardson chose this solution. For the factor, fans’ responses to the punishment, I rated it a one out of ten. It is evident that Ray Rice’s two-game suspension was seen as too mild of a punishment. If Richardson gave Hardy a five-game suspension, there could be another backlash because of the fans’ responses. This would create an entirely new problem for the NFL, damaging their reputation. The Carolina Panther’s income would also worsen. In Exhibit 3, it is clear that the Panther’s income is extremely dependent on their merchandise, ticket sales and broadcasting. If Hardy is only suspended for five games, the team could lose support from many fans. This would cause their broadcasting, ticket sales and merchandise to decline, which would have a
Teitel exclaims that “When we talk about football as an innately violent sport, we extend the same crutch to truly violent men like Ray Rice, who have nobody to blame for their horrendous, evil behavior but themselves” (40). A video surfaced of the former NFLer attacking his fiancée, now wife, Janay Rice (Teitel 40). The video had been released by TMZ and became international news overnight (Teitel 40). Rice was suspended indefinitely and torn apart by people all over the world (Teitel 40.) The same had happened when Minnesota Viking star, Adrian Peterson, had been indicted on child abuse charges when visible whips were seen on his son (Teitel 40). The writer, Margaret Wente, writes that football players are supposed to practice acts of
Great post Raul! Although, I don’t agree that this really hurt the Miami Dolphins brand as much as Ricky Williams did around that same time. While, it did draw a lot of media attention; this certain incident could have been great news for certain publics. This bulling situations could have been beneficial for the team’s or individual player bad boy image, referring to chapter one page nine, the two models commonly used in sports media relations; press agentry and publicity model: “there is no such thing as bad
Some of the professional athletes who abused women for example or any type of crime are only punished for one or two games which is nothing. “Commissioner Vincent suspend Howe for life. The arbitrator determined that commissioner Vincent reduced the suspension to a year long and a stringent drug-test and drug education program.” (Parlow) This quote proves that something the Commissioner changes the suspension which is unacceptable because if Howe was supposed to be suspended for life then he should be suspended for life. “The NFL likes to point that its player do not commit acts of violence against women at a higher rate than males in the general population.” (Benedict) This quote shows that the NFL does not like to admit that their players abuses women or do crimes. Professional athletes should be punished for their illegal behavior.

The NFL’s primary response to the matter was not as severe as it should have been. They basically demonstrated that domestic violence is not a serious issue and can easily be brushed aside. Only when there were serious repercussions, they decided to change their punishment and view on the issue. The NFL has failed to realize domestic violence is a reoccurring problem and have not taken serious offence when it comes time to deal with the issue. In addition, the approaches the NBA and MLB have taken on domestic violence are going to have a strong influence on Richardson’s decision.
In an article by Live Science it is discussed how violence is all apart of football and that is how they shine on the field. The excuse is made in the article," it's difficult for athletes to turn that off when they go back to their regular lives " A popular topic in the past years has been NFL players and violence. In my research it came upon me of a case that starts before any sort of professional career. In Wayland, Massachusetts a football star Nathaniel Fujiti is sentenced to life at age 20 for murdering his ex- girlfriend Lauren Astley. Lauren went to his house where he beat, strangled, and slashed her.
Sadly domestic violence has been very present in the media. We have seen a lot of it dealing with professional athletes. We see many of the cases happen to girlfriends, fiancées, wives and even children. We constantly are seeing a recurring theme with domestic violence and the NFL. But is the NFL really going enough work to bring an end to these athletes getting off the hook? Is the media making matters worse or shining light on a topic that is so often turned heads to? There have been 93 domestic violences cases within the NFL and four child abuse cases. After 93 now the NFL starts to take charge in this issue. The NFL has reacted poorly to domestic violence and doesn’t seem to be doing as much as they think they are.
