Music and the Emotional Responses of the Human Body Rhythm. Melody. Poetry. These three components are the basis of every piece of lyrical art since the creation of music. Music is a way for artists to project all their emotions onto an outside project; allowing people to release any pent up anger, aggression, sadness, depression, happiness or any other feeling. Without music, artists would have no way to channel their energy into something positive and creative. The power of music is said to have the ability to affect the body both emotionally, and mentally, in both negative and positive ways. Take, “Happy,” by Pharell Williams for example. “Because I'm happy/Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof/Because I'm happy/Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth.” When writing this song, Pharell drew emotion from very happy place in himself and the song, "Happy" is a pretty accurate portrayal of his feelings. This type of music is said to make you as a person feel happier but, that isn't necessarily the case. Personally, I know many people who absolutely hate this song because it makes them wonder why they themselves are not as happy as Pharell Williams may be. For example, while writing essays, student have a harder time writing while listening to music than while not listening to music. This is true especially here at the University of Arizona. The results of a survey I created showed that the majority of students felt listening to music was often a huge distraction, rather than a means of help, while studying and doing work. Also, listening to music while driving is often a huge distraction and has been known to cause car accidents.
