Attaining the title “Hero” does not come easy. They need to be superficial yet have flaws that appeal to the common man. For example, superman is born on another plante giving him superhuman strength on our planet. Once exposed to the energy native to his home, he “wilts”, becomes weak in his skin. Furthermore, Heros must benefit the world in some way a normal human cannot. Though Iron Man may be a mortal man, his IQ outserpasses almost any other human in the world. Given this natural gift, he creates machines kids only dream of. Equally, a hero must gain popularity in some way or fashion to gain respect for example, to Christians Jesus transcends above all other heroes because of the longevity of his existence. A psychologist named Phillip Zimbardo said, “I 'm saying to be a hero is means you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice, so heroes always are making a sacrifice. Heroes always take a risk. Heroes are always deviant. Heroes always doing something that most people don 't and we want to change - I want to democratize heroism to say any of us can be a hero.” As a child, I watched cartoons and movies that have protagonist being a hero with superpowers. When in reality heroes don’t have the superpowers like the one in television. Everyone has their own perspective of what a hero is. I never really had a hero to look up to it’s more like a role model or someone whom I look up to. A hero is as an individual or a network of people that take action on behalf of others in need, or in defense of integrity or a moral cause. Heroes take risks and help others without the expectation of material gain. Heroes are people whom we admire or look up to. They are viewed as role models. Heroes’ qualities are having courage, willingness to sacrifice, humility, and wisdom.
The modern day hero contributes positively to the society; he or she is a role model to different race, age and gender. In Beowulf, the king was in charge of the kingdom and he was obligated to fight with his warriors while the modern day, the President is in charge of the people but he does not fight with them in battle, he sends his soldiers off. Modern day heroes are not out looking for fame or fortune, they operate with great passion and drive to fulfill their dreams; if they get recognized for their great work, it is not publicized, it is done within the confines of the work environment. Modern day heroes do not depend on physical strength, they think of other ways to positively impact the society for example, Philanthropy is a great way to impact change in the community and philanthropist are seen as heroes in the eyes of the people they help. Heroes can be defined in many forms. The classical heroes are strong and care about the other feelings. Their strength help them to fight with monsters and other mythological creatures. Because they have compassion for the others, they usually risk their own life to save people, just like Perseus did to save Andromeda. On the other hand, the modern-day heroes face
The stories of heroes have been at the axis of nearly all cultures throughout history. Each different type of religion or culture has their own heroes or legends, each one of them having their differences to go along with the beliefs at hand. On the other hand, each and every hero also has their similarities, which therefore makes them the hero. The setting, events, and characters in each and every story may change, but the characteristics of the hero remain basically the same. Each person is usually made into a hero in a somewhat similar fashion. For example, many heroes begin as imperfect characters, and then begin some sort of quest which leads to them becoming a leader of what they are doing, and then the character goes through a
Heroes are so much more than people that fly around in capes and fight off villains, heroes can be everyday people that just want to help. Take the movie Hacksaw Ridge for example. In the movie there is a character named Desmond T. Doss, Desmond decides to join the army during WWII as an Army Medic but not only does he want to join the army but he refuses to carry a gun do to his religious beliefs. At first the Army would not let him join unless he used a gun because they all thought he was crazy and did not know how he was going to survive.
When people think of a hero, they do not understand you don't need to be just like superman, you don't need to be able to fly, or be immortal and never die. There is no need to wear a mask, save the world, or have special powers. To me, any regular person can become a hero in their own way. I believe a hero can be found in any piece of literature, most main characters are all heroes, but they are all heroes in a different way. To me, in order to be a hero, all you need to do is put someone else's life in front of your own, if you can change someone else's life you can then call yourself a hero. Aristotle once said that a tragic hero is "one who does not fall into misfortune though vice or depravity, but falls because of some mistake".
A hero can be viewed differently in many eyes. Author and lecturer Joseph Campbell, has correlated a hero as usually being a male, often of lowly birth, but with special powers or a higher birthright, the hero doesn’t know about. Also, the hero parents are often dead, absent, or uncaring, and the hero is judged by the actions he takes and the way he reacts and relates to people. In the opinions of others, a hero is also a person admired for bravery, great achievements, abilities or good qualities and is regarded as a role model. A hero is also, admired for having done something very courageous or having succeeded in something great. In literature, the hero is the main character of a story, play, or movie. In the textbook, The Norton Anthology
Heroes in classical mythology are often compared with gods and are seen to be more akin to gods than mortal men. They are famously known for the quests or the deeds carried out by them. These quests usually do not take place near where they originate from. They need to travel long distances and usually transgress geographical, cosmological and physical boundaries. During these quests, they come across and have to interact with a range of divine and supernatural creatures, objects, and people. In doing so, they can be seen helping keep the society more ordered and civilized. Due to their deeds they too like gods have their own cults and/or are worshipped. Many of the heroes also gain apotheosis (immorality). Heroes can have divine parentage which classifies them as hemitheoi (half gods/ demi-gods). All these qualities of heroes truly makes them more akin to gods than mortal men.
Oliver Stone once wrote, who he saw his heroes as“ Sciences who spend years of their lives trying to find cures...The inner-city kid who works at McDonald’s instead of selling drugs. The kid who stands alone instead of joining a gang, which would give him instant identity...People who take risks despite fears. People in wheelchairs who don't give up…”. (SB, pg.64) Heroes are people who choose the right no matter the situation. Making sacrifices for others benefit, being determined to rise over challenges, and not being perfect instead making mistakes are just some of the traits that make a hero.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, with many different capabilities, values and attributes. We see heroes’ every day; it can be a firefighter, police officer or even your parents. Heroes have been around for a long time all displaying the same skills and abilities, but as time passed heroes started to present values of their society. But what truly makes a hero? What values does the hero portray about society? We get a good understanding for this after analyzing Ancient Greek heroes like Odysseus. Ancient Greece society valued pride, and bravery as displayed by Odysseus. However, heroes today show more humbleness and selflessness, as our society has changed from the Ancient Greek society.
What does make a hero a hero? Is it there looks? Alternatively, maybe is it their personality? However, the question is what are those essential qualities that make one a hero? Different people require different heroes to look up to or try to emulate. However, whoever it may be, they all possess certain qualities. My hero is my mother, for the reason that she is selfless, compassion, and courage. That kind of selflessness can often be premeditated, since concentrating on others' needs often winds up helping one accomplish one’s own goals. However, a heroic leader does so without any anticipation of a return. The display and concern show the care one has for others. This can often apparent itself in strong but gentle actions planned to increase the lives of others. Courage and bravery come to mind first when we think of heroism. However, it is difficult to achieve anything truly heroic unless one is up against overwhelming chances. As Nelson Mandela put it, "Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it." These minor acts of heroism rarely attract any notice. A true hero is always sympathetic, benevolent and shows a great deal of compassion and sympathy to those poorly or in agony. He or she keeps away judgements; that are oriented to the self and embraces an attitude that serves others.
