Honorable Character Traits

One of the most influential people in my life thus far has taught me an immeasurable amount about values, morals, and positive character traits. When I first had the privilege to meet this person, I knew him as Drill Sergeant Oakes. Hence the title he had earned, this was not an enjoyable moment of my life. However, I could already assume that he was going to be a great mentor for me. He was my Drill Sergeant throughout Army Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. He then took me and a few of my peers with him to his next duty station, my first, Germany. There, we trained for six months for a deployment. Our unit was deployed to Iraq for the duration of one year. During this time, my mentor became the First Sergeant of our company.

We are living in a world where selfishness seems to be the rule of the day, and personal gain the objective of most relationships and endeavors. One of the most honorable character traits a person can develop is the ability to be loyal. When one is loyal, it means that they are dedicated to something or someone and they offer all their support. Loyalty plays a significant role in maintaining any form of relationship.
Duty means a moral or legal obligation to perform an act or task. Without the obligatory feeling, there is no sense of duty. For example, many men and women feel they are completing a duty owed to their country by joining the armed forces. They feel the responsibility to enlist because of moral or philosophical reasons. For them, enlisting fulfills this feeling of duty. However, if someone enlists solely to help pay for college, they are not accomplishing a duty of theirs, since they do not feel the obligatory
