Tesco is the leading food retailer in Britain, they have also focused on building non-food sales which are available in store and online. Tesco is one of the world’s largest retailers with approximately 4,331 stores in 14 countries which include Asia, Europe and the United States. (Tesco, 2011). See appendix 1 for a map of the countries Tesco operate in.

Tesco is the leader store in food retail trade in Great Britain and it is ranked the third biggest shop in the worldwide. It opened firstly in London and in the middle of the nineties, Tesco become a common place for all families in the UK. Few years after it brings a new idea to the store which is introducing different areas such as Tesco metro that meet the needs of local customers, gas station and it was the first station in UK, Tesco express, Tesco direct, Tesco bank, Tesco Clubcard which a card for loyal customers, Tesco mobile and many more.

This section is mainly about the study of the method that will be used to examine the research problem. Method acts as a tool or instrument for measuring variable stated in the objectives or the way of the study being conducted. Once researcher have chosen the scientific method as the means of inquiry, researcher must make some decisions about how researcher are going to gather all information (Kenneth & Bruce, 2005). There are two types of research method can be used to collect data either quantitative method or qualitative method.

Second, to investigate the problem and existing situation. Third, to provide solutions to problems. Fourth, to explore and analyse more general issues. Next, to construct or create new procedures or systems. After that, to explain new phenomenon. Then, to generate new knowledge. Otherwise, combination of any previous purposes. The purpose of research will determine the suitable method used to get the objective.

This chapter embodies background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, proposed methodology, significance of the study, delimitation or scope of the study, and gives an overview of the salient issues to be discussed in the subsequent chapters below.
