Abstract
The Hybrid vehicle concept nowadays is on the path of becoming one of the brightest stars in the foreseeable future. Environmental issues that beset the world today such as Global Warming, entail many long-term negative effects which in turn, must not only be solved through short-term solutions but also be countered with long-term solutions that will benefit not just the future of society, but the future of planet earth and the well-being of its inhabitants. In response to this global crisis, various industries and institutions are now searching for alternative energy sources such as the Hybrid vehicle. The Hybrid vehicle seeks to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on petroleum and diesel by substituting majority of the powertrain

Toyota introduced the first modern production hybrid vehicle, the Prius in Japan in 1997, and Toyota and Honda introduced hybrids to the US in 1999 and 2000. Both manufacturers use the same hybrid powertrain design, an input power-split system.
Fuel economy
Hybrid systems can increase fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions by 35%. The precise reduction varies with the technology and capability of the system. The reduction can be hard to quantify as there is no direct comparable non-hybrid vehicle. A study done by Vincentric on October 2014 which compared 31 hybrids to the closest non-hybrids provides a direct comparison of the efficiency benefits and cost of hybrid systems.
Basics of Hybrid vehicle technology
A traditional vehicle has a mechanical drive train which includes combustion engine, fuel tank, gearbox, transmission and the wheels. A Hybrid vehicle has two drive trains a mechanical and an electric. The electric drivetrain includes a battery and an electric motor. In principle these two drivetrains should be connected together sharing some components such as transmission and
Second, consider what your job or lifestyle require from a vehicle. Do you need to haul stuff for work? Do you have a big family and love to travel cross country with things in tow? For instance, my dad is a contractor and hauls an eighteen-foot trailer. Therefore, towing capacity is important when he is considering a truck purchase. His GMC K1500 can tow upwards of 10,000 pounds. Even the 2013 hybrids cannot compare with roughly a 5,500 pound towing capacity, but remember that towing that weight only happens when the engine makes the shift from electricity to gasoline. What needs to be understood is that a hybrid engine first relies on electricity, but the electrical spark cannot move the pistons as high or as fast as the explosions that happen in the internal combustion engine of a gasoline powered vehicle. As a result, in order to get the extra horsepower needed when towing,
As the gas price is rising up to 140 cents per litre in Canada, many people switch their vehicle to gasoline-electric hybrid car to gain savings from the better fuel efficiency. Many potential consumers for hybrid vehicle and hybrid vehicle owners think that the hybrid system is worth the extra penny due to better fuel economy. However, the realistic is that it has higher maintenance despite of its outstanding fuel economy figures. In fact, the hybrids cause more environmental damage than conventional petro powered vehicles and there are better alternatives. Therefore, hybrids should not be on consumers’ shopping list due to a numerous negative facts that consumers are unaware of.
The author first explains what a hybrid is, stating “A hybrid is a cross between two established varieties of plant, animal… or technology.” She introduces the hybrid vehicle, a new form of technology that stands as a possible answer for a vehicle that is both energy preserving and safer for the environment. Before she dives into details of how the vehicle works, she enlightens the reader on what the article is about and the objective of the hybrid vehicle. Students enrolling in an engineering course in a post-secondary institution will be more
There has been lots of controversy on whether hybrid vehicles are environmentally better than gas vehicles. In this new age of technology and vast growth of human population, there would have to be ways to make driving environmentally healthy considering the fact that millions of people drive(Goffman, “Electric Car Batteries Could Provide Energy for the Smart Grid”). Hybrid cars use clean electric , while gas powered cars use harmful polluting fossil fuels. For the most part, to make sure that this world becomes cleaner, hybrid cars will definitely need to be used in the future. Hybrid cars are environmentally better than gas cars.
Hybrid cars are built on the advantages of both combustion engine cars and battery-powered electric motor cars, and the hybrid cars will be an alternative to combustion engine cars until next step technologies such as fully electric vehicles or fuel-cell powered vehicles will take over. This article supports the ideas shown in the main source through hybrid vehicle technology.
When discussing the performance and mechanics of the Toyota Prius, the first aspect of the car that must be deliberated is its hybrid functionality; the primary factor that separates it from other cars. The term “hybrid” refers to the fact that the Prius is both an electric- and a gas-powered vehicle. The Prius is equipped with a four cylinder 1.8 liter engine that produces one hundred thirty four horsepower and an electric motor that produces sixty-seven horsepower (“Toyota Prius” 86). In layman’s terms, this means that Prius on paper delivers an average of fifty-five miles per gallon. The fuel-efficiency of the Prius is somewhat of a well-known fact; however, the ability of the car to accelerate from zero to sixty in about ten seconds with this motor/engine
Hybrid vehicles are continuously gaining popularity in the general public. With the growing societal concerns about green revolution and also achieving significant reduction in fuel consumption, hybrid vehicles are considered satisfactory in performance. They have become so popular that certain tax incentives have been offered by the government on hybrid vehicles. Due to their better performance compared with gas powered vehicles, we present the thesis of our paper as follows:
In conclusion today I have informed you all about the first existence of the hybrid vehicle which was created by Ferdinand Porsche, known as the Elektromobil. The common types of configurations that are available, which include
The article “The Gas-Electric Hybrid Demystified” by Sara R. Howerth, gives the reader some insight on the new developed technology of hybrid cars. The author uses the difference between four engine models; Gas-Engine, Battery Powered Electric, Hybrid model #1 and Hybrid model #2 – to show just how far technology has come and to say that this is only just the beginning. The engine will keep evolving as long as our natural resources continue to diminish and our need for them increases.
What is a hybrid car? Basically, it 's a normal, fuel efficient car that has two motors an electric motor and a gasoline powered motor. It also uses a special system to store braking energy in an onboard battery. But why buy a hybrid? Why not buy a traditional gas or electric powered car? Keep in mind, one of the basic rules of science is the more
Now, in a hybrid car, there is a battery assisting, so that the cylinders have to do less work, and consequently use less fuel. A Prius has only 84 horsepower without its electric battery, and wouldn’t even be able to start! (Regular Car Reviews, Youtube) But this battery isn’t all good, which brings us to the first problem with these hybrid cars.
Although Toyota invented this new hybrid vehicle more than ten years ago, it did not offer the car to the USA consumers immediately. The main reason was that Toyota was aware of the new technology challenges. While Toyota was on the market research and new product development, other companies were focusing on merger and acquisition. Brand recognition, technology changes and improvement take several years to finish and Toyota wanted to launch a product which has cleared all the possible obstacles such as space, efficiency, speed, safety, weight which can meet all consumers ' expectations.
A number of hybrid vehicles have been built and tested since 1980. Some of these vehicles have impressed analysts with their performance and low levels of exhaust and petroleum consumption. Interest in hybrid vehicles jumped in late 1993 with the announcement of funding for
Figures of different hybrid models will also be included as well as a table comparing the costs of various hybrids to traditionally fuelled cars. This will help the audience get a sense of the price ranges for hybrid vehicles before they go out and decide to buy one. Finally, a table dealing with the performance specs of hybrids will be added to emphasize certain limitations with these models.
Consumers are currently looking for better gas mileage and performance in cars that they buy. Honda’s hybrid cars has very good gas mileage, however, they do not have as good performance as petrol cars. This means that even though Honda’s hybrids are appealing due to their gas mileage, consumer may still stick to petrol cars because of the better performance. Honda will need to develop better technology to satisfy consumer wants.
