Title: Emission Control Advances on Diesel Engines
Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience about diesel emission technologies.
Central Idea Statement: There has been three major technologies added to diesel exhaust systems since 2003 including an EGR, DPF, and SCR that have dramatically reduced NOx emissions (smog gases).
Introduction I. Who knows the fundamental difference between a gas and diesel engine? A. A gas engine uses spark to ignite gasoline while a diesel engine uses compressed air to ignite the diesel fuel. II. Diesel engines in turn run more efficiently or simply get better miles per gallon than a similar sized gasoline engine. A. A diesel engine are more efficient up to

B. Domestic and foreign automotive manufactures have collaborated on developing these systems and the EPA has invested millions of dollars into the research and development to make diesel engines run clean and efficient. C. So you may still ask, what does this have to do with me, well let me ask, do you breath?

In 2002 a joint project between International Navistar and the Ford Motor Company was born. “The goal of this project was to create an engine that was fuel efficient, emission compliant and would be able to outperform all of the competition” (Banks Power). With over 2 million ford super duty’s equipped with the 7.3l Powerstroke engine on the road, the new engine would have big shoes to fill. The engine that was to replace the outdated, underpowered and overall inadequate 7.3l Powerstroke was the International Navistar 6.0l turbo diesel.
1. Have you ever wondered how the things you buy get delivered to the stores? Semis, planes, trains, and sometimes boats. The majority of them run on diesel, because diesel is more efficient than a gasoline engine. With the number of diesels on the road everyday there is a high demand for mechanics that are properly trained to work on them. You have to be able to leave home on a moment’s notice to travel and repair trucks on the road. Being a diesel mechanic is very stressful and you never know what you will be working on day to day.
The dependency on transportation in today’s society is quite remarkable. There are many forms that people take advantage of everyday including: planes, trains, and automobiles. Unfortunately, these diverse varieties of transportation do not run on imagination. For automotive vehicles, the most prevalent material used to operate are fossil fuels. There is a popular concern with the abundant reliance on these fossil fuels, which are a nonrenewable resource. The controversial usage has opened the discussion to alternative opportunities for fuel sources that, potentially, can replace the current fossil fuel being used in automotive vehicles. When considering the current market of cars, many have complaints in gas powered automobiles. There are many problems, commonly discussed, with emissions. Cars have a tendency to be harmful to the environment, and expensive to use frequently. This is where the alternatively powered cars are introduced into the conversation. There are multiple vehicles that can replace the prevalently operated, gas powered cars. However, alternatively powered vehicles must be considered in the same aspects a consumer would think about when buying a normal car. The buyer of automobiles, in the current market, look at the necessities that come with the maintenance and upkeep the car requires. Price, maintenance costs, insurance, incentives, and quality of life are
With the supply of fossil fuels steadily declining, gas and oil is becoming harder to harvest which means it is getting more expensive. Fossil fuels take millions of years to be naturally produced, yet each person burns gallons of gas per day (Maehlum par. 5). Though fossil fuels are produced naturally, when burned they release nitrogen oxides gases into the atmosphere, which contributes to the formation of smog and acid rain. According to the EPA, major sources of these nitrogen oxide emissions come from cars and trucks, coal-fire powered plants, large industrial operations, and ships and airplanes (EPA par 3). By reducing the number of gas powered cars on the road, we can reduce the amount of harmful chemicals we are releasing into our atmosphere.
As a result of EPA regulations, today’s diesel engines are more efficient than ever before seen in large and midsized trucks. Certain regulations restrict truck owners from using certain truck models, because of excess diesel emission. Increasing drastically as technology improves, cars and trucks produce less and less diesel exhausts and emissions. “But because diesel engines can operate for 30 years or more, millions of older, dirtier engines are still in use,” (Epa.Gov). Reducing exposure to diesel exhaust from these engines is especially important for the preservation of human health and the environment. According to the EPA, the United States Environmental Protection Agency,
One resolution to the fuel pollution issue uses the idea of reinvention to curb the damage that smoke and fuel causes to the environment. A U.S. company, Sea Change LLC. paired with the Maine Maritime Academy to create a more friendly fuel (“1”). The engineering classes at the academy along with chemists created a fuel that burned cleaner and safer for the environment. The fuel used mirco-glycerol droplets mixed with ultra-low sulfur diesel to reduce harmful emissions and as a result found a reduction in smoke by 25 to 50 percent (“1”). In addition Nitrogen Oxide levels showed a reduction by 5 to 15 percent compared to regular low-sulfur diesel at equivalent horsepower (“1”). This hard work truly paid off big for these two entities and they showed that with some ingenuity safer ways of burning fuel just wait to be
A major source of air pollution in Los Angeles is diesel engines. Diesel engines are an “internal combustion engine having fuel injected into the combustion chamber near the end of the combustion stroke. The fuel is ignited by the heat of compression only” (Hoffman, 2002). Diesel fuel is created from refined crude oil. There is a three
We have developed a process that has been successful in improving fuel economy and engine life while simultaneously reducing harmful emissions output.
Diesel emissions from idling trucks are a major health threat, according to the EPA, causing heart attacks and lung problems for drivers and workers, as well as young children and the elderly (“O’Leary”).
From 2009 through 2014, Volkswagen aggressively marketed and promoted their diesel-powered vehicles as more energy-efficient and producing less harmful emissions than before. Customers were promised that diesel was a more efficient alternative to traditional gasoline, and that it had great benefits for customers looking for a “greener” alternative.
Automobiles, almost everyone uses them, but not many people pay much attention to what powers their vehicle. Two of the most common automobile engines are gasoline and diesel, but which one is better? Most people tend to pay little mind to the differences between these two engines, but ,as with anything, one tends to have advantages over the other. Which engine has the advantage over the other in the categories of reliability, fuel efficiency, and repair cost?
In addition, diesel exhaust increases cancer risks, and a 2000 California study found that “diesel exhaust is responsible for 70 percent of the cancer risk from air pollution” (vi). In fact, recent studies have linked diesel exhaust with asthma. Major air pollutants from diesel engines at ports that can affect human health include; particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur oxides (SOx). (Harboring Pollution)
The strain on the diesel supply in America is too high and a stable source must be found to alleviate the strain. Bio-diesel is a suitable additive in diesel that would help reduce this strain. Bio-diesel is also much safer than conventional petrol-diesel.
Diesel fuel and machinery management seemed to be the most significant areas for improving energy efficiency.
Road transportation providers have adopted several innovations that have lowered the environmental impact of this transportation mode. The adoption of clean diesel technology by the industry has resulted in significant reductions in fuel use and emissions by trucks. This innovation in diesel engine
