What defines a good leadership? Is it the qualities that he exhibits, or the rather the polices that history remembers him by? The time period of American Civil War is a great time period to examine these questions, and can be done so by looking at the two main presidents of both the Union and the Confederacy: Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. While the two were both skilled in some areas and unskilled in others in terms of leadership, history remembers Lincoln as the better leader due to his characteristics of intelligence in the political /military field as well as when it comes to personal rights.
Leadership, as you should know is a very important role in society. Without it all of society and everyone in it would probably crumble. No more inspirations, abolitionists, presidents, or really anything. There can be good leaders, malicious leaders, greedy leaders, and even inspiring leaders. But the question is; what makes a good leader and who is an excellent role model on this subject?
When I think of whose a good leader I think of two people, Martin Luther King Jr. and Adolf Hitler. These two people were two totally different leaders but they were both great leaders. Martin Luther Kind JR. led the Civil Rights movements in the United States. He used nonviolent, or peaceful, protest to try to get equal rights for African Americans. He aroused white and black alike to protest racial discrimination, poverty, and war. He would give amazing speeches such as “I have a dream” in front of 250,000 people. Hitler was a good leader but obviously was a terrible person. Hitler turned hundred of thousands of people into Nazis. Some key areas that Hitler was good at was his vision, change management, compassion, charisma, and develop the team and making the team better.
Before defining an individual as a great leader, one must first understand the definition of leadership and the qualities that make a leader. According to businessdictionary.com, “leadership involves establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with others so that they will follow willingly, providing the information, knowledge and methods to realize that vision, and coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members and stakeholders.” The website goes on to say that “a leader is the one who steps up in times of crisis, and is able to think and act creatively in difficult situations. Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught, although it may be learned and enhanced through coaching or mentoring” (Leadership).
Who was in the civil war time period that had leadership skills? Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglass were both in that time period but born as slaves. But there is other people like abolitionists and President Abraham Lincoln. But what was their leadership characteristics?

From abolishing slavery and preserving the Union, to fighting tyranny and oppression abroad, both events in American history had a profound impact on all those involved. The impact would most certainly be different if not for the leadership of Colonel Lawrence Chamberlain of the Union Army during the Civil War and General George S. Patton during World War II. Both leaders possessed the 5 practices essential for god leadership, yet both leaders to different approaches to accomplish their goals.
