Successful leadership depends on your ability to understand and deliver what you patients and their families, the marketplace and regulators expect (Tillman, 2015). Only focusing on delivering quality is not enough, a leader must also understand the capability of their workforce, business partners and the suppliers of critical goods and services (Tillman, 2015). All these skills and attributes together work towards creating a systems thinker and good leader (Tillman, 2015). The Healthcare Quality Book defines leadership as “working with people and systems to produce needed change” (Ransom, Maulik Nash & Ranson, 2012. pp. 311). The Ransom et al. text explains leaders must be; authentic embodiment of core values, trustworth, consistent in thought, word and deed, in love with work, rather than the position of leadership, someone who adds energy to a team, humble but not insecure, focused on results, rather than popularity and passionately committed to the mission of the facility and people they serve (Ransom, Maulik Nash &
