Leadership Examined
There have been many great leaders down through history. Leaders that have influenced change throughout many aspects of society. Great leaders have great influence. The effectiveness of a leader is determined by his leadership style. With so many styles to choose from, and the fact that not one style fits all situations, becoming an effective leader is a challenging task. One reflective note is that it is important to cultivate good leadership skills. One must evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses and consider making changes as the situation demands a different leadership style. (Origitano, 2015)

There are four types of leadership that stood out in my studies. The four types are: Situational Theory, Visionary Leadership, Blake-Mouton Managerial Grid, and Transformational Leadership. Each of these styles show varying ways to lead that I have seen exemplified in the lives of leaders through history, the Week 4 case study, and administration in school districts I have served.
Situational Theory. The Situational theory proposes that leaders choose the best course of action based upon situational variables. Different styles of leadership may be more appropriate for certain types of decision-making. In the Week 4 case study, the situation called for a different type of leadership than presented by the superintendent. He came into the meeting with an authoritative style. Presenting his vision and expectations. No consideration was given to the principals, who felt their role was that of instructional leadership to their campuses. The superintendent expected collaboration, but only brought about conflict with his proposal. In the situation he should have been more democratic and communicated with the principals prior to the meeting and then validated their concerns. (Cherry)

There are two kinds of people in this world, followers and leaders. Followers are the people that never take a leadership role in any activity. "They are more valued by followers and have higher performing teams." (Cherry 2014) However, leaders are the ones that use their leadership skills to make a difference in this world, such as presidents, teachers, or even college graduates. Leadership is not something you can learn from a book, but you have to gain this skill through experiences such as holding an office, organizing an event, speaking in front of people, or participating in a leadership program.
Becoming a strong, influential leader is determined by an array of factors, as well as who we are as people. Our most inner being holds the key to whether or not we are destined to become successful leaders. Culture and society also play a powerful role in our leadership style. It is thought that various styles of leadership have varied effects on leadership practice and results. Regardless of our natural abilities, there will always be room for change, growth, and overall becoming a more effective leader.
Thirdly, the visionary leader is also a person who can attract others to follow him/her in seeking attainment of the vision. But more than that, this charismatic person is able to instill in others the ideas, beliefs and values of the vision so that they become empowered to move beyond the leaders and their own expectations. George Washington, the first president of the USA, can be a good example here. Effective followership is an essential component of effective leadership in that, without good followers, the leader’s work is difficult and cumbersome. The role of the follower is many times understated. As illustrated by Kelley (1998), “effective followers are thinkers; energetic and assertive, self-starters, independent problem solvers, and carry out their tasks with these characteristics (p. 143). Effective followers also are characterized by their ability to perform tasks with little supervision, their intelligence, and ability to think for themselves. Looking back to an inspiring leader of mine, George Washington, I see a man that was able to influence other to do great things that ultimately formed the United States after overcoming great odds against Great Britain. He was a transitional leader that was able to accomplish great things for which I idol him for that especially in a time where I do not see any true great leaders of George Washington’s caliber. I aspire to be a great leader in my future and I have been working toward this goal ever since high school. It is important to understand who you are and where you can improve as a leader because it will be important as you leader others and attempt to shape a business, a country, or a large group of people across the world. This assessment will determine my strengths and weaknesses as a leader by providing detailed examples based off of my perspective. It will relate my leadership ability to my personality and go into describing how my leadership relates to the Trait Approach, Skills, Approach, Behavioral Approach, Situational Approach, and Psychodynamic Approach. Further explaining how each of these leadership approaches is integrated to define leadership and how an individual is a leader through personal qualities and how they influence others to impact organizations. This situational leadership theory is a great assessment to evaluate how people respond to working and being led in groups. The four situational leadership theory are telling, selling, participating, and delegating (Northouse, 2013).
The four leadership styles within the situational leadership model are: Directing style: Leaders at this stage increases the motivation in each team member. Whenever there comes a point when a team member thinks that they can’t get a job done the leader come through and direct them in the right direction. They are able to point the team member on the right path to accomplish their task.
Warren Bennis (1997) wrote in Learning to Lead: A Workbook on Becoming a Leader that “There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important. To manage means to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge of or responsibility for, to conduct. Leading is influencing, guiding in a direction, course, action, opinion. The distinction is crucial.” (Leiding, 2004, p.11) However, it is difficult to draw a clear distinction between leadership and management and create an ultimate formula because they perform simultaneously in an organisation, and the organisation is complex. Sometimes, it is easy to mix the use of leadership and management when the roles interrelate. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the role of each concept and how it can be effective when combined and how it can be ineffective when missing one or another. Both ideas have been researched widely, however, to date there is no single definition that portrays the whole picture of each. Nonetheless, what is known is organisations need outstanding management as well as great leadership to make the complex organisation sustainable and successful. Thus, in this essay, I will discuss each concept separately, and compare and contrast the processes of leadership and management through scholar’s definitions.

The situational approach was developed by Hersey and Blanchard (1969a) that was based on Reddin’s (1967) 3-D management style theory. Other contributors to situational approach are Blanchard, Zigarmi, & Nelson, 1993; Blanchard, Zigarmi, & Zigarmi, 1985; Hersey & Blanchard, 1977, 1988). The behavior pattern of an individual influences others through directive (task) and supportive (relationship) behaviors. The situation is the development levels of subordinates; the degree to which subordinates have the competence and commitment to complete a give task. The leader chooses appropriate leadership style that corresponds with the development levels of subordinates. The leader finds the commitment level of the followers that is supposed to dictate the given leadership style. The leader diagnoses the situation and then adapts his/her style (Northouse, 2013).
According to (SOURCE) trait theory of leadership, the leader’s are deemed to behave in a variety of ways because they have intrinsic attributes. Curiosity, self-control, empathy, ambition and self-confidence are the main features needed in leadership. (SOURCE) argued that leadership cannot be learnt since individuals are born as leaders. Therefore, whilst appointing individuals to leadership positions certain traits need to be considered. As a result, procedures of selection are deemed more important than developing people (Hogan et al 1994)
