Molecular and Microbiology. Many people hear the major and shudder; thoughts of sleepless nights, studying for courses unintelligible by the ‘average’ person, mad scientists hunched over test tubes and doctors doing open heart surgery. Research science and medicine, that’s what my major is geared towards, and I’m pursuing the medicine side of it all. Maybe I’ll be that open heart surgeon that comes to mind, or maybe just a family practitioner, either way, I want more than anything to be a doctor, a great doctor, and while my M&M degree is the first step in making that happen, I’d have to say that being a Lead Scholar is the second. Individual, Group, and Societal/Community values are all listed as parts of the model, and within my studies, both as an M&M major and a Lead Scholar, I have seen purpose in my career goals for all three (55). Personal values are an important part of bringing about social change. One part of this section of the model is Commitment (Komives and Wagner, 55). I don’t think there has ever been any discontinuity between what my science courses and what my Lead courses say about Commitment. It is obviously one of the most important things, in any profession or position, to have a passion and dedication towards what you do and to pursue it purposefully and without yield. Being actively involved in something you feel passionate about is essential if you’re going to keep yourself committed on the hard road that is the pursuit of medicine, and the same goes for bringing about any positive social change. I am well aware that there are challenges in my path, such as the fact that according to the article editorial Female Medical Leadership: Cross Sectional Study Editorial by Kværner it is noted that only 28% of all physicians were women and the portion of female physicians who were also leaders was a mere 5.1% (Kværner). The odds of becoming a part of that five percent are sure to be slim, but through my leadership courses I have been able to identify what significance being truly committed to your purpose can do for you, in any profession, and I’m sure
