Econ 122B Problem Set 2 Name(Print)______________________
Due in class Feb 6 UCI ID_____________________________ MultipleChoice Questions (Choose the best answer, and briefly explain your reasoning.) 1. Assume we have a simple linear regression model: . Given a random sample from the population, which of the following statement is true? a. OLS estimators are biased when BMI do not vary much in the sample.
b. OLS estimators are biased when the sample size is small (say 20 observations).
c. OLS estimators are biased when the error u captures perseverance and self‐ control, and you believe that

b. be unbiased if using a large enough sample.
c. be biased, because the variance of efficienc/ability depends on training.
d. be unbiased, as long as both prod and training are recorded correctly.
8. Suppose you have the following estimated equation,
500 84 , where Burger refers to weekly number of burgers sold on average in In&In Burger joint and price is in US dollars. What would be your estimate of the slope if price were in GB pounds (assuming 1 GB pound = 2 US dollars) AND you use daily number of burgers sold rather than weekly? a.

where colGPA is measured on a four‐point scale, hsperc is the percentile in the high school graduating class (defined so that, for example, hsperc = 5 means the top 5%

of the class), and SAT is the combined math and verbal scores on the student achievement test.
1)
How would you interpret the estimated slope for hsperc?
How would you interpret the R2?
2) 3)
Suppose that two high school graduates, A and B, graduated in the same percentile from high school, but Student A’s SAT score was 140 points higher (about one standard deviation in the sample). What is the predicted difference in
Percentage of students ages 15 to 24 in grades 10-12 who were enrolled in high school the previous October but were not enrolled and had not graduated by the following October. [ 10 ]
The case involves the decision to locate a new store at one of two candidate sites. The decision will be based on estimates of sales potential, and for this purpose, you will need to develop a multiple regression model to predict sales. Specific case questions are given in the textbook, and the necessary data is in the file named pamsue.xls.
Standardized test (p.149) - This is a test that is administrated and scored in a consistent/uniform basis.
As a result from the taught curriculum children receive from Mathematics and English, they are forced to take a yearly test also referred to as the standardized test. The standardized test comes from the federal law and measures how much a student learned throughout the year and if they understood the material thoroughly. According to Ravitch “our policymakers today think that what matters most is getting high test scores in reading and mathematics” (Ravitch 106). The statement indicates that for the federal state it only matters if the school receives outstanding scores;
Our school system has taught us that we should be good at test taking, answering multiple questions, and how to write essays. For a lot of students during their high school career SAT or ACT was a really important part in their life. Many students rely on their test scores
Generally speaking, the SAT is a one-day test where students are forced to test in specific areas such as math, reading and writing in an allotted time period. An individual’s success cannot be measured by a snapshot of time. Many believe that time does not help reflect a student’s overall performance because there are multiple of variables that can happen throughout the time period and day to that individual. In addition, the SAT testing does not take into account other academic areas that a student may excel in. While a student’s GPA on their transcript can show administrators the student’s strengths and weakness since it reflects an accumulative of four years in high school, thus it is able to better represent a student’s academic
The SAT is a standardized test which over a million students take per year. This test supposedly was made to determine, approximately, how well freshmen in college will do. Although, studies have shown only twenty five percent of test takers scores actually match their grades (O'Shaughnessy). The SAT is unnecessary and unfair for students applying for college because it prevents diversity in schools and big businesses only care about the profit from the test.
“No issue in the U.S. Education is more controversial than (standardized) testing. Some people view it as the linchpin of serious reform and improvement, others as a menace to quality teaching and learning” (Phelps). A tool that educators use to learn about students and their learning capabilities is the standardized test. Standardized tests are designed to give a common measure of a student’s performance. Popular tests include the SAT, IQ tests, Regents Exams, and the ACT. “Three kinds of standardized tests are used frequently in schools: achievement, diagnostic, and aptitude” (Woolfolk 550). Achievement tests can be used to help a teacher assess a student’s strengths and weaknesses in a
In 2005, “within five years of entering college, 40 percent of students from the top
The issue with the SAT test is a dilemma when it comes to certain subgroups in this country, even though it seems to maintain its effectiveness for others depending upon race, ethnicity, and gender. Colleges and universities administrators, testing agencies and psychometricians should reassess the use of the SAT’s as the only means of admissions and develop new criteria for admissions for higher education.
The two common college admissions exams in the United States are the Standard Achievement Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT). They are nationally standardized tests used for college admissions (“Socio-Economic Bias in SAT and ACT May Be Leading to Scoring Disparities”). Most colleges require either the SAT or the ACT for admission (“SAT Officials Hope to Score Points on Eliminating Bias”).
When most people think of the SAT nowadays the first thing they think about is usually their academic fate and success. Many individuals have shared anxiety in believing that this test can make or break their success to getting into a good college. Many colleges today use the SAT score as part of their application process to help determine if a student is college ready material.
The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), created by Carl Brigham of Princeton University, was introduced in 1926 by the College Board [1]. The SAT is an attempt to predict how well a student will perform during their first year of college without measuring past academic achievement. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) was
SAT and ACT are just two of the standardized testing implemented in our educational system today. The score obtained from standardized testing serves is valid predictors of the success of the students as they pursue higher level of education. As with other standardized testing, data are generated that will hold teachers and school accountable. If the score is low, it’s because there is a need to modify the curriculum or the teacher is not doing their job as educators. But what if
Juniors, seniors, or any college applicants are required to take either the ACT or the SAT, and submit their score before getting accepted into some colleges or universities. Both the ACT and the SAT is standardized test that is designed to test student’s readiness for college. These test are taken before applying to college. Students or adults will go to other schools where either of these test are administered. They must apply on line to be able to take these tests. The ACT and SAT are not a good source for college admissions because of the scoring, students may not be prepared enough, and how accurate the test is.
