The Magna Carta signed during King John’s rule is not only a powerful document but also treated as sacred for making kings subject to the laws of man, limiting the power of monarchs. This document is significant considering that it brought about English liberties where every man, woman, and child were to be treated equally, have a right to speak in court and judged by law and all resulting punishments or imprisonment for free men decided through a proper court system. The essential virtues of this document have played a foundational role model in influencing the United States Constitutional drafts including the bill of rights.
John was cunning, violent, witty and above all, he was not to be trusted. King John betrayed those closest to him, betrayed his father, Henry II and his brother Richard the Lionheart, persecuted the innocent and was the first King of England to be accused of murder. No one could imagine that John would soon go down in history as the first English King to commit murder with his own hands. King John did not fear God nor respect men. His punishments were cruel, starvation of children and crushing of old men and no woman was safe. John's high ended attitude towards women was also to have huge consequences in England. Driven to despair, John subjects would impose a document on him called the Magna Carta guaranteeing of their own rights. John refusal to abide by it finally drove those he governed to rebellion.
