I. CONTEXTS A. Statement of Intent Mari-Jane Williams (2013) beautifully articulated the importance of teaching life skills to teenagers in an article written for the Washington Post titled “Life skills all teens should have before graduating from high school.” In the article Williams writes:
Everyone graduates from high school knowing how to read, write and do basic math (hopefully). But to be a self-sufficient adult, those skills are not enough. In fact, they’re nowhere close to enough. Advanced skills in academic areas aren’t going to help a young adult out of every jam he is likely to face in the next few years. Most of those predicaments probably will have nothing to do with Shakespeare, trigonometry or world history. What will he do when his car breaks down or he gets sick? Does she know how to navigate a job interview …show more content…

These skills include: budgets and money, handling emergencies, developing people skills, managing time, and running a household. The Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum teaches all of these life skills plus many more. Because of this, I whole-heartedly feel that FCS classes are some of the most beneficial ones that high school students will take during the course of their educational learning. This LIA project will cover one such topic which every teen needs to learn in order to be a responsible adult - parenting. I will be teaching the parenting unit to my fourth period Life Connections class which consists of students in 10th – 12th grade. The three-day unit will include parental readiness, parenting styles, stages of pregnancy, important parenting issues (such as bonding and the “terrible twos”), parenting skills and coping, and brain development. The unit will include pre and post teaching assessments to gauge students’ learning and understanding of the unit
