Growing up with a mother who was a mental health counselor, the field of psychology was always around me. I have always loved this subject, and have taken every opportunity to read new theories, learn about new research methods, and take psychology classes. The brain has always intrigued me and when my stepfather suffered a stroke I realized that neuropsychology is the field I will work in.
The brain is an entity that fascinates me, and I want to learn as much as possible about it. Seeing how brain damage has affected every aspect of my stepfather’s life, I cannot wait to begin my own research and study how the brain heals and repairs itself. Besides traumatic brain damage, I am also interested in learning about the changes that occur in the brain with various diseases, such as mental illness, aging, and Alzheimer’s. I have been reading new theories discussing Alzheimer’s possibly being a third type of diabetes; I am amazed that this disease- that over five million people in America alone suffer from- is so baffling that new theories still come out. I want to be a part of discoveries that will

After that, my goal is to conduct research on the brain, studying how it heals. I would love to study how different parts of the brain effect different functions and how the brain evolves and compensates for damaged areas. The brain is amazing and I want to learn as much as possible about it. Neuropsychology encompasses everything that I love. By working in this field, I will not only be able to see how the brain functions and acts as a single entity but also how it interacts with every aspect of a human: emotions, behavior, cognition – literally everything a person is and does traces back to the brain. That is so mind blowing. When I hear or learn something new about the brain, I get excited all over again and know this is the field where I need to

Becoming a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor is not as easy as people may think. Every state has a different process to become a licenses counselor. This paper discusses the difference between prices, hours to even credits. I will be comparing the state of Florida and New York. There are certain process that are the same yet many different. As a student going to school for Clinical Mental Health Counseling you would think every state would be the same.
This past year, I was given the opportunity to take part in the Brody School of Medicine’s Honors Medical Research Program under Dr. Qun Lu. Currently, we are studying novel mechanisms for the treatment Alzheimer’s disease in mouse models. I was greatly interested in Dr. Lu’s project as it related to my interest in neurodegenerative diseases. Over the past couple of years, I have seen the debilitating mental effects of old age on my grandmother at home and how severely Alzheimer’s disease and dementia affects the minds of patients at the hospice I volunteer at. Through my experiences, I decided that I wanted to further explore the enigma of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Lu’s lab proved to be the gateway to achieving this goal. On every floor, there was a new mind hoping to solve health issues through new innovations. The passion for research was contagious and I found myself becoming consumed in the movement as well. Despite having different research specialties, each lab has the same central goal: to help others through discovery. The Harriet and John Wooten Laboratory is the think-tank where all medical

Obtaining a Ph.D. in counseling psychology will give me the outlet to do just that. At a young age I lost my mother to pneumonia, leaving my sisters and me distraught. Coming from an African American home, there was a stigma against psychologists. Instead of us receiving the psychological help that we needed in order to handle our loss, we were expected to cope with it on our own and that resulted in us suppressing most of our feelings. Members of my family did not see the value of going to talk to a stranger about the issues going on in our personal lives. Similar situations to mine happen often in the African American community. This experience is what strengthened my desire to become a counseling psychologist. There is a need for more African Americans in the counseling profession. African Americans should not have to question whether to seek psychological help. I want to be a familiar face so that I can contribute to African Americans feeling comfortable with turning to professional psychological
As I generalize and outline my reasons for becoming a Counselor, I am reminded of the things on life in which I am passionate about. Throughout every aspect of my life, helping others has been the most prevalent attribute that is revealed in my life. Being in service as a minister for over twenty years has placed me in positions to offer service to those that are hurting, lonely, depressed and literally have lost their ability to hope. As a Counselor, I would be able to assist students with daily challenges that may have blocked their path of making logical decisions for their lives. I find it rewarding in helping others find solutions to their problems or to support and encourage them if their results are not as promising as they have imagine it to be.
Mental Health Counselor We’re all a little crazy, just some are more than others. It can be hard to keep a healthy mental state while the mentality of a person itself isn’t considered the “social norm”. This is what mental health counselors are for. They help people with mental illnesses deal with it in a civilized and safer way than they may try on their own.
During my sophomore year, I decided to sign up for the class "Intro the Counseling Psych." Little did I know this class was going to set me on a course that would change my high school career for the better. It has been two years since taking that class and I am now officially a high school student counselor. As a counselor, I have many opportunities to better my school community. One of such opportunities is taking part in putting together a high school camp. This camp is no ordinary camp though, this event is put on by the psych-social department and is meant to help students become comfortable with who they are. As a staffer, I spend three weeks prior to the camp, painting signs, preparing activities, and even finding costumes to get students
As a first generation college student, I found it quite difficult navigating through a four year institution during years I attended Northwestern State University. From the struggles of financial stability to the challenge of balancing school and personal life with little to no guidance, the journey through my collegiate career was quite troublesome to say the least. As an African American male with a father who was incarcerated, I already felt as if a stigma had been placed on me that I would succumb to the typical stereotype of multiple children out of wedlock and the distribution of narcotics as a primary source of income. With that in my mind and the hopes of my family on my shoulders, I set out and accomplished my goal of graduating from
I would like to be a mental health counselor because I am deeply empathetic; to me, it is rewarding to connect with others on a personal level in my work, and I see that relationship as the essence of counseling. I want to make a positive lasting impact on the lives of others, by listening to, valuing, working with, and teaching them. “People” has always been my answer to “what do you want to do when you grow up?” As a child, I saw teachers as role models who taught me about morality, friendship, and responsibility; as a college student, I admired counseling staff who, despite the counseling center being understaffed and facing rising rates of mental illness on campus, never failed to listen to their patients; as a young adult, I recognize that empathy is my strongest personality trait, and that it is important to me that I use it in my professional life. Although the professions that I have considered in my life varied over the years, the core truth

People fact setback specially a person that is recovering addict or alcoholic, one uncontrolled life situation can make them turn to that comfort zone of that drug or alcohol whatever they think help them cope
Thank you for your essay. I agree with your statement identifying the root of the issue the client is facing is the first step to making the counseling session successful. Reviewing the biological, psychological and social aspect of a individual will help to determine the best treatment plan for the client. I also agree with your statement about the disease of the spirit. It is very possible that one starts abusing drugs on their journey to find an outlet that will alleviate the pain they experienced. I agree that abusing drugs is a form of idolatry. Many times our voids lead us into idolatry. Many people who seek fulfillment through their addictions is crying out for love, not realizing that God is love. God is the definition and

Completing this project hasn't deviated my choice to become a counselor once so ever. I recognized the time and dedication I would need to put forth. I connect with this profession because I leaned on my counselors throughout high school. After recognizing how much I was helped I wanted to give back to other students. In my opinion, the pros outweighed the cons considerably and made my decision easy. When dealing with children who are emotionally or physically abused it will be heartbreaking to listen to their stories. On the other hand, if I truly become an amazing counselor, I will be there for emotional support. I will be dedicated to helping all children who need someone in their corner to stand up for them and what's right. As part of
