Motivation Analysis Of ' The Shawshank Redemption '

Shawshank Redemption is a drama intended for entertainment about a man wrongfully accused of murder and sentenced to life in prison. The movie then shows his life in the prison before escaping and the problems he faced and how he overcame them. Although intended for entertainment if you pay attention you can start to see more than just a story in this film. Throughout the movie you become more aware of how the prison works and what motivates the prisoners. The way the prisoners and guards are motivated and act can be explained with principles found in Psychology, and these principles can be observed throughout the entire movie. Among many Psychological principles found in the film Shawshank Redemption, the ones that are most easily seen in the movie are Groupthink, Social Learning Theory, the Feel Good Do Good Phenomenon, and the Foot In The Door Phenomenon.

Motivation is, according to the text, “A set of energetic forces that originate within and outside an employee that initiates work-related effort and determines its direction, intensity and persistence.” (Colquitt) When one hears the word “motivation”, one automatically thinks of an individual’s reasoning behind a certain task or performance. In terms of job motivation, it is what pushes or encourages a person to not only perform the work tasks, but to also be successful in the position and within the company. Motivation includes factors like “what do you do? How hard do you do it? How long do you do it?” The question of motivation has been a topic of discussion for decades. Many might think that money or, financial gains, play a huge role in motivation for an employee; however, motivation may differ drastically from person to person. Various underlying elements affect an employee’s motivation. There are several theories that are able to partially summarize aspects that account for high motivation.

To begin with, Business Dictionary defines Motivation as the “internal and external factor that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job or to make an effort to attain a goal”. There are different theories of motivation e.g. Maslow’s Theory, Two factor Theory and so on, but my main focus is the Reinforcement Theory.

Motivation is giving somebody a reason or incentive to do something. It can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is focused by an awareness or satisfaction in the task itself and usually occurs within the person rather than relying on external force. Extrinsic motivation is from outside the individual. Some common extrinsic motivators are rewards or punishments like evaluations or money, pressure, and threat of reprimand.
