In 2008, the town of Boone began a new project called The New River Project. This project was designed to ensure that the town of Boone had enough water to meet the needs of the town as it grew. This project explored several sites for a water intake facility and proposed a site in Todd, North Carolina on the South Fork of the New River (Town of Boone, 2008). This project was presented to the residents of Watauga County as a need to ensure water was available as their growth edged nearer to maximum capacity for the available water.

CE 1.3.3 I studied plant system architecture and the interfaces with the distributed control system (DCS) and emergency control system (ESD) of Honeywell,as this was key aspect for interface. Since the data like signal values, alarms, trips etc. from MCMS was serially interfaced by either Modbus or OPC(OLE for Process Control) to DCS .The trip signals from MCMS system was hardwired signals to ESD, since these are very critical signals for machine shut down.

Water use has become crucial for the many diversified Canadian industries that exist, thus sustaining its supply is essential. The most common industries include manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and hydroelectric power generation (NRT, 2011). Water use may range from a coolant, a solvent, a dispersant, and a source of hydroelectric energy. Direct surface freshwater withdrawal from sources like rivers and lakes was the source of 61.3% of manufacturers’ water supply (Industrial Water Use, 2009). Pulp and paper industries accounted for 49.8% while the primary metals industries accounted for 31.8% of the surface freshwater withdrawals. Additionally, chemical industries accounted for 8.4% and petroleum and coal industries accounted for 5.6%. Of the total hydroelectric power water intake, 92.1% originates from surface freshwater bodies. Of the total discharge 96.1% goes to surface freshwater bodies, most of which (84.5%) is not treated before discharge, which has detrimental effects on water quality (Industrial Water Use: Analysis , 2008). Another goal was to track changes in water quality, especially the expected reduction of nutrient inputs from the watershed from the installation and improvement of collection and treatment infrastructure in the County. Objectives of the AMP, in accordance with the ACJ are as follows:

Wastewater treatment systems are very important to providing clean, drinkable water to its surrounding societies. These systems also help in the removal of contaminants in wastewater from household sewage, runoff, domestic, commercial and institutional units. Processes include physical, chemical and biological manipulation of contaminants to neutralize their effects on the human body for consumption. There are three main types of treatment, primary, secondary and tertiary, all of which have separate units and processes that flow in an organized manner to ultimately end up with recycled potable water.

The Wheaton Sanitary District is already using a state of the art monitoring system to track status and record the measurement of the key plant operational equipment. The Supervisory Control and Data Access (SCADA) system interfaced with the plant equipment provides, the operation team, a real time data on the key components of the plant 's equipment. SCADA allows operational team to open, close or adjust equipment parameters to archive maximum efficiency to meet the peak demand. According to Russell and Taylor (2014), the size and complexity of the problem makes the decision making often difficult. Further, the flow is controlled by a bottleneck, so any resource should spend no time on non-productive activities, but must have material to work on to overcome the theory of constrain and the focus should be of automation efforts. SCADA does allow automation and the data collected from SCADA helps aeration optimization for scheduling which will ultimately reflect any capacity limitations. The new high energy turbo blowers save 30% energy to mix and aerate the tanks (Poole, Neighbors, Green, Baert, Sosnowski, and Wold, 2012) and the control flow provides additional saving with no additional capital cost. The real time monitoring and the dissolved oxygen (D.O.) measuring in the aeration tanks allows a development of a new plant control strategies to optimize the system performance thus consuming less power.

As stated above, the company used DMAIC to define the problem and solve it. In this project, the author has also included lessons learned at the end of the project. So the report has been well-classified into 5 parts accordingly - Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control.

Looking at the Wheaton Sanitary District historical weekly wastewater treated data the treatment capacity of the plant exceeded the design capacity at least 5 times in last 8 years highlighted in red text in the "Figure - The Wheaton Sanitary District historical weekly wastewater treated data: 2008-2015".

The used of fibre optic technology in subsea control system has impressively improved the communication capacity, quality and reliability. With the United States growing and cities becoming larger and larger day by day, communities have been battling water shortages all throughout the country. For the past fifty or so years reclaimed water has been used all over the world. Within the course of this case paper I will attempt to compare and contrast the secondary water treatment methods to that of the tertiary water treatment methods.
