My AP Calculus Class

I think it is safe to say math has always been a passion of mine. I remember learning to count to 1000 in first grade. When I was finally able to do it without any help, it was like swimming for the first time, eating the ripe tomatoes I grew myself, or putting together a new song on the guitar. The feeling of accomplishment cannot be recreated. As we get older, this feeling becomes more difficult to achieve. This only increases my motivation and determination to learn something new. We study math because it teaches way of thinking and method of solving problems that helps you to gain some knowledge about mathematical applications,formulas and mathematical techniques.

Mathematics is not for one type of person: not only for the nerdy and weird outcasts, not only for the white male, not only for those who are not targeted by the stereotypes prevalent in the field. Mathematics is not dry, nor boring, nor focused on inane solutions never to be used after the discovery. Mathematics is not what people think it is; it is not one field, one theme, one subject. Mathematics is everything. Look around, with clear eyes, and you will see the art of mathematics everywhere. In my writing, my goal was to portray my experiences with the online AP Calculus AB course I took last year (sophomore year), in order to demonstrate when I learned some of the most important lessons in my life. Furthermore, through the use of different parts of my personal experiences, I also wished to address the different lessons that I learned; hopefully using the contributions of all of these lessons to arrive at a “final” lesson. To do this, I decided to focus on three main parts: giving the reader context and information behind my initial character/mindset, demonstrating how the AP Calculus AB course influenced that character/mindset, and showing what I learned from the AP Calculus AB Exam. Moreover, I wanted to have a different tone in each of these parts, both demonstrating my different feelings as well as portraying very different “aspects” of myself . For the first part, I decided that I wanted to have a “lighter” tone and focus on how I was excelling at school with ease, because this would contrast clearly with the next part. For the second part, I decided that I wanted to have a deeper mood while seeming confused, because this would further show the contrast between the first and second parts, as well as demonstrating how this truly was the first time I truly learned that lesson. Throughout my life, failure has been a constant reminder of how much I more I have to grow and learn. A time when I have experienced a significant failure was in my Calculus AP class. Before this class I would've thought that math was the easiest subject for me, hover, upon taking this course I've never been more wrong. The failure in this class progressed from a D to and F. In conclusion, math isn't just used to count money or determine measurements in a career like most people assume. There's a lot more to the involvement of math, even if you can't seem to find how math is related to it. Math is used in many careers. Math is one of many subjects I need to learn in order to be an electric engineer. To become an electric engineer, I will need to learn algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus I and II, linear algebra, differential equations and, statistics. This is important because they use math in many categories such as calculating amp and volt requirements for electrical projects and creating computer simulations and designs for new products. Engineers also use mathematics when dealing with robotics and computers.

Algebra is used everyday in everyone’s life. People use algebra to find out how much of a product can be bought while staying under a certain price. Algebra is used in daily life, including a large number of careers and jobs. Three careers that require algebra are chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering.

Maths encourages me to delve into divergent thinking. It thrills me that there is always more to learn and the knowledge is never capped. Maths to me has acted as a mechanism for calming my busy mind. For example, some people enjoy the tranquillity of music, whereas my music is maths. Achieving the correct answer whenever I complete a maths question brings me great satisfaction, which further increases my motivation towards further learning. I have always thought that once you find that numbers are easy to work with, you develop an appetite to learn more about maths & through practice it will stick in your mind forever.
