Nursing Innovation and Leadership: A Personal Philosophy To embrace the person that you are, in a time and place where everyone seems to be telling you that you should be everything but the person that you are, is a daunting but worthwhile challenge. I believe that it is in the acceptance of our true selves, imperfections and all, that we gain the ability to view others through a lens colored with compassion and acceptance. It is then that we can become a leader who is self-aware and emotionally competent.
Personal Philosophy of Innovation My personal philosophy of innovation encompasses many ideas. It is not only thinking outside of the box, but questioning why the box is even necessary. It is about creating opportunity out of disappointment, being open to different, and unafraid of being vulnerable. It is about breathing, living, and embodying the change that you want to see in the world and exploring new paths in achieving that change. Innovation is being courageously defiant in the face of the universe shouting “You can’t” and replying with a resounding “Watch me”.
Personal Definition of Innovation I believe that innovation is the process of examining a new and different method that cause one internally and/or spiritually look at something as you have never seen it before, and the creation of a new meaning to the way that we relate to and interact with people, the environment, health, and nursing.

I would define innovation as the ability to apply this creative thinking to an existing product, solution or approach that improves the outcome of a solution to a problem or usefulness of a product. Innovation is the ability to put creative thoughts to use in a way that is beneficial to a person, product, object, problem or situation. .
“Nursing is informed caring for the well-being of others” (Swanson, 1993, p. 352). Kristen Swanson’s relationship-based caring theory encompasses maintaining belief, knowing, being with, doing for, and enabling. Nursing is a profession with vast opportunities for growth and development. Each nurse has his or her individual passions; mine reside within obstetrics, women’s health, and nursing leadership. Nurse leaders play an integral role in the success of healthcare organizations. Nurse leaders shape the roles of nurses within their organizations. Nurse leaders seek methods to improve patient care. They also use innovation to gain efficiencies in care delivery and decrease healthcare cost. Many nurse leaders have an ultimate goal to aspire to be a chief nursing officer in a healthcare
Alongside the entrepreneur spirit, Innovation is the process of taking new ideas and implementing them into the market. Key word being “new”, an innovation can be sometimes viewed as the application to better solutions that meet new demand-requirements, inarticulated needs or existing market needs. Innovative ideas range from: goods, services, products, processes, services, technologies or ideas that create value for which customers will pay for. For an idea to be an innovation, it must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. This means is that one must be ready and willing put their new idea to the test. On the other hand, there is recognition that “innovation is also critical to cultural, environmental, social, and artistic progress as well” (Bullinger, 2006). With this stated, high-tech innovation is ultimately the reason why we can be thankful for the many new conveniences of the 21st century. Although we might see the forefront of innovation being very prominent in today’s world, innovation is truly nothing new. From the start of modern man times, innovative ideas have paved the way for civilization to advance and develop into what we are today and at the same time, we have barely begin to chip away at the tip of the iceberg of our true human potential. Innovation. To some this word means a new idea or product. To me innovation means an improvement on the way that the world views something and inspires change. An innovation is as simple as the wheel or as complex as discovering how to map the human genome. Innovations have the power to impact the world in major ways. Even ideas or movements are considered innovations. The civil rights movement changed our country by opening the eyes of our citizens to the racial inequality that was occurring. It ignited change in the way we viewed each other as human beings.
Nursing leadership competency is a very important to me as an employee, it can mean the difference between having a chaotic or smooth workday. It is the responsibility of the manager to put forth a plan on how and what needs to be done. Communication, vision, trust, adaptability is essential for a leader when implementing changes and dealing with subordinates working toward a group goal (Huber, 2014). In this discussion board, I will explain why understanding and effectively managing change and innovation is an essential leadership competency is important in the workplace.
