Naiyel's Accomplishments

The first of these was the completion of my Bachelor of Science in Cyber Operations. The curriculum in that degree path directly supports the D.Sc. in Cybersecurity program. Following my undergraduate graduation, I continued directly into the Master of Science in Applied Computer Science specializing in Cyber Operations and this degree also directly supported the D.Sc. In Cybersecurity program.

My passion for mathematics was fixed at the age of ten, on the morning that my mathematics teacher told I would be sitting the Junior Maths Challenge, 'as practice for when you are older'. As I nervously started to answer the questions, a whole world began to open before me. I revelled in the problem solving, answering questions of a nature I had not seen before. My teachers were delighted when I emerged from the exam hungry for more. Since then I have consistently demonstrated my aptitude, achieving gold awards through to senior level, and scoring highly in the European Kangaroo.

Reuben is a clever student who has achieved some reasonable results this year for Digital Technologies. His grades do not accurately reflect his true potential, but rather his effort. This year, in MA103 I hope to greater develop my problem solving and mathematical skills. In order for this to happen, I have a few expectations for the course. On top of course expectations, I also have expectations for the instructor and myself that I hope will be met throughout the semester.

With the widespread use of technology becoming more prominent, acts of cyber terrorism pose an increased threat to safety. Cyber terrorists exploit the internet and its users to commit acts that can be increasingly detrimental to their targets. Some of the terrorist activities include large scale corruption of computer networks by using tools like computer viruses. Certain individuals even have the ability of creating severe damage to government systems, national security systems and even hospital servers. Most of the technology made today only has intentions of making life easier for people. However, skilled users can manipulate the cyber world for negative intentions. In today’s society mathematics is a vital part of day-to-day life. No matter what a person is doing at home or at the workplace, he/she is constantly using different mathematics skills to simply function. Then what does this mean for mathematics education? When someone needs to utilize a skill every day then he/she needs a strong background in the skill. Therefore, today’s students need more than a just a working knowledge of mathematics or enough knowledge to pass a test. Today’s students need to understand how mathematics works and how to utilize mathematics skills in the best way possible.

Maths is ubiquitous in our lives, but depending on the learning received as a child it could inspire or frighten. If a child has a negative experience in mathematics, that experience has the ability to affect his/her attitude toward mathematics as an adult. Solso (2009) explains that math has the ability to confuse, frighten, and frustrate learners of all ages; Math also has the ability to inspire, encourage and achieve. Almost all daily activities include some form of mathematical procedure, whether people are aware of it or not. Possessing a solid learning foundation for math is vital to ensure a lifelong understanding of math. This essay will discuss why it is crucial to develop in children the ability to tackle problems with initiative and confidence (Anghileri, 2006, p. 2) and why mathematics has changed from careful rehearsal of standard procedures to a focus on mathematical thinking and communication to prepare them for the world of tomorrow (Anghileri).

As a child, I grew up enjoying mathematics and science; this led to my dream of becoming an Information Security Analyst by majoring in Computer Engineering in college. I chose this profession because over the past couple of years, the world has become more dependent on technology, which means that there is more technology that needs to be developed and better network security will need to be implanted to meet the progressing world’s standards. By being in this profession, there will always be job opportunities in small and large companies because networks, computers, cell phones and many other gadgets are prone to being compromised. For example, Boeing is a prestigious, global company that is one of the leading manufacturers of cyber security that offers several internship and job opportunities to undergraduates and graduates. Future graduates will be able to learn reliable information on what they need to become an information security analyst because an intensive amount of time was taken to research and find credible sources.

Over the years I have heard stories from my relatives about how much I would like painting my aunts’ nails, wearing my mother’s heels, and debating everyday on what I wanted to wear for school. Matching my clothes, having my nails painted, and having my hair nicely done everyday, were a must for me as a child. Along with always trying to enhance my composition, I have had a love for shopping ever since I remember.
