Negative Aspects of Hosting Olympic Games
The Olympic Games is one of the biggest and most unrivaled sporting events in the entire world. At first it may seem like a huge plus or advantage for a city or nation to host this event. However on the contrary there are a lot of negative aspects that occur when a nation hosts this event. While the event is taking place, from the outside it looks like a state of the art, prestigious event that it is. Some of the problems that are caused by hosting Olympic games deal with, stadium development, local resident life, security issues, and many others that will be discussed. One of the big problems when dealing with a mega event such as the Olympic Games is the stadiums, which get built, and how they get abandoned or not used after the games are finished. This is one of the major problems surrounding the Athens 2004 games. Many of the stadiums and infrastructure are left untouched and abandoned to this day.
Higham (1999) discusses that there are numerous problems, which will be evaluated with hosting an Olympic games such as, development issues, local resident issues, short-term affects, and security issues. In terms of development issues, there is a significant cost dealing with large scale sporting events, and economic benefits are generally received more by big time business interests not the host community. So the host community doesn’t benefit as much as they potentially could by hosting the
The city of Los Angeles will make a better location for the 2024 Olympics rather than Paris, France. There are many key factors that prove the having Los Angeles host the 2024 Olympics will go much smoother than having any other city host. For example, LA already has had the experience of hosting the Olympics, therefore the city have learned from its’ mistake. Although some may argue that another city should have a turn, the matter is not about fairness, it’s about making sure the athletes will perform in a less stressful environment. Nearly every person knows that Southern California has dreamy skies and gorgeous weather. Without having to worry about rain, snow, or an excessive heat wave, LA is at the top of the charts for a guaranteed smooth
Should the Olympics stay in one place? The Seattle Times says, “If the Olympics stayed in one place that would deprive nations of showing their pride.” One example of the Olympics traveling was in 1964. The Tokyo Olympics marked a shining moment in Japan’s history after that devastating bomb in WWII that was dropped on them. Second, a poll was taken in 2012 and it showed British men felt proud that the Olympics were in London. There are also bad things about the Olympics traveling though. However, sadly the last few Olympics have been leaving places bankrupt like Sochi, it costed them $50 billion dollars. Tim Wendel states, “The price on the Olympics will only go upward.” Staying in one place will also cost less, but it will also take away
Big sporting extravaganzas are always meant to be good for the host city. It's how the evangelists that make up the bid committees sell it to governments and residents. And during the bidding process and the lead-up to the games, whether they be Olympics, Commonwealth, or PanAm/ParaPan, everyone gets worked up into an optimistic froth about how awesome all the new stuff they're getting is going to be.
The infrastructure of the Olympic games will be a legacy. The legacy of hosting the Olympic games is most visibly identified by the improved physical character of Greater Boston. Boston 2024 Olympics bid concept shows: Greater Boston region will take an exponential jump forward with a new Midtown multifunctional neighborhood in the core of the city, a new student village at Boston’s public university, a renewed public golf course at Franklin Park and Somerville will get a opportunity to transform into the ‘cycling capital of America.’ (33) Boston 2024 committee also announced that Boston will also build more than 28 venues or renewed in a 10-kilometer radius of Boston urban area, and two major clusters for residences and stadiums will be established by the Government of Boston.(29) As Grillo said in Boston Business journal, 3,000 to 4,000 new affordable workforce units of in midtown can solve Boston’s housing
Winning the bid for the 2012 Olympic Games by London city has brought the hope for regeneration of the entire Lea Valley in East London which can bring about the biggest urban development witnessed by Europe in the past 150 years (Coatler F 2004). In the year 2003 City of London was bestowed with the honour of being the host for 2012 Olympic Games. It’s easy to win the bid for hosting such a massive sporting event however the planning and development which is needed for successful execution of the games takes a lot of hard work and effort. The execution and planning involved behind the stage is a good measure of the host country’s capability and is put forward in front of the whole world to judge (Morgan, M. 2008). The London Olympics were successful primarily because of the flawless collaboration between the International Olympic committee and London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic games (LOCOG) with its numerous partners and stakeholders. (Tramantano E , Bishop J , Jones G , Miller A).This even showcased the significance of
Every two years, millions of people around the world turn on their TV sets and watch the greatest athletes in the world compete for the greatest achievement any athlete can reach… The bronze, silver, and gold medals of the summer and winter Olympics. Those millions of people cheer mostly for their country and wear their favorite athlete’s jersey. They plan parties for their favorite events and make memories with every game. With all the hustle and bustle, people don’t stop to think about how the Olympics affect the town, city, state, and even world around it. How does it benefit? What does it cause? What does it leave behind? Who does it impact? So many questions can be thought up about how the Olympics impact the world. The two most
The Olympic Games, hosted in London of 2012 has sought out to be an economical benefit to the surrounding areas. The increase of tourism and advantages of exposing the community allowed for a semi stable financial aftermath.
This controversy revolves around the stadium meant to be the host for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. With the preparations for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, one of the preparations was to build a new stadium to host the games and in 2012, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) won the stadium commission through an international competition (Dezeen, 2015a). Soon after ZHA bid won, they started work on the site and after two years, and after Japan had won the bid to host the 2020 Olympics, the controversy began with the main argument against the project being that the architectural design was over budgeted and that it could not be financially sustainable. As a result, ZHA had to revise their design in 2014 with a new design that addressed the previously voiced criticism. However, with criticism still raging on, Japan Sports Council (JSC) canceled the firm’s plans in July 2015, after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe weighed into the issue by announcing that the design plans will be scrapped as a result of spiraling costs and that the project would be started from scratch. This issue ended up being referred to as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium controversy and one of the major architectural controversies of 2015 (Dezeen magazine, 2015b). This paper,
The construction and refurbishment of the sporting facilities required for the Olympics to take place in Atlanta, was supervised by the ACOG (French, 1997). However, modifications and expansions of the sports venues meant that designing and construction process was particularly challenging (Yarbrough, 2000)
More recently passed the closing of the Olympic Games in Sochi, and now the whole world is looking forward to the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, known as marvelous city, whose government allocate huge amount of money for this event. The marvelous city has been elected in October of 2009, after the election of the hosting city among Madrid (Spain), Chicago (U.S.A), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Tokyo (Japan), becoming the first host city of the Games of the Summer Olympiad in South America. In order to be ready for hosting, the government of the Rio de Janeiro has already started to prepare for the Olympic Games, which will continue from 5th to 21st of August 2014. About 15 villages, stadiums were built and reformed. Moreover, 5 stadiums are going to opened in 2015. (www.olympic.org) The overall budget for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro is approximately $14.4 billion, which is about R$5.76billion.(www.brazilnyc.com)Despite this, to attract more tourists from all around the world and gain more profit from the games the government should spend more money, even if it is over the budget.
It's a gorgeous early August day. You just want to be outside, regardless of what you are doing. Are you? Nope. You are sitting in your car, stuck in traffic because your evening commute home has tripled in time due to the traffic. This is a common side-effect of hosting the Olympic Games. On the other hand, the influx of people coming into the city does wonders for the local economy. Every few years, countries throw mind-blowing amounts of money at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the right to host the Olympic Games, but is it worth it for the country and its citizens? In 2015, Boston was in contention to host the 2024 summer Games, but ultimately lost out to Paris, much to many Bostonians delight. Was their reaction justified, or did they just miss out on a great opportunity?
On September 1st, 2006, the International Olympic Committee accepted the bid from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The nation’s government proudly declared the news to the world, and began to prepare their nation to host one of the oldest and most prestigious sporting events in the world. Now that the dust has settled, many are beginning to question whether the hosting of the 2016 Olympic games was a blessing or a curse.
Winning the bid to host the Olympics is no easy feat. But, hosting it and all the effects of that come with it can be complete and utter destruction to the people, their spirits and their economy. Thousands of tourist empty their pockets every four years – Rio De Janeiro has some high ceilings; but, higher expectations. The thing with the Olympics is you must have to infrastructure to handle it. Which in most cases the countries don’t and this is especially true in Rio’s case.
A good example of a well-managed post-Olympic game era is London 2012. All new venues will either be developed into world-class professional arenas for specific sport as there is a desired need or turned into community use facilities, predominately for the newly re-developed Stratford area. A good example of well managed post-game era facilities at the Olympic Park is the Olympic Village which will be transformed into 2800 homes. Another example is the Basketball Arena which has been totally dismantled and the land used as an open-air concert venue which did not exist in this party of London prior to the games. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has played host to various large concerts, including Hard Rock Calling and Electric Daisy Festival.
For the purpose of this essay, Harry H. Hiller’s definition of a mega event will be used. ‘A mega event is of fixed duration and on a short-term basis. The event has a high profile, there is a worldwide interest linked to the event and there is a sustainable and measurable economic outcome’ (Harry H. Hiller, 1998, vol1, no.1). With the main focus being the sports mega events of the Olympics and FIFA World Cup. The modern Olympic games began in 1896, since then, there has been a significant increase in the number of bidding candidates. Which has led to an increase in the funds invested in the Olympic bids. Increased expenditure on bids provides evidence, that the future host nations, believe major rewards will be reaped through hosting. These rewards include increased media coverage, leading to globalisation and infrastructural investment which fuels urban regeneration for the host nation. (Essex and Chalkey, 1998). The intention of this essay is to determine why different countries around the world host mega events. The reasons for hosting include; increased tourism rates, increased participation levels, soft power and the ability to get rid of negative stereotypes. When the modern Olympics were established, in 1896, the Olympic movement was created. Leading to the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Federations and the National Olympic Committees. The International Olympic Committee are at the heart of the Olympics, represented by a
