Climate Change in the United States Climate change is a prominent issue around the world. Pollution, deforestation, emissions and carelessness of humans pose threats to the earth’s flora and fauna. Animals, plants, agriculture and ecosystems themselves are being harmed by the constantly rising temperatures. Earth’s wildlife is a key factor of survival, producing materials needed to make necessities, food, and recreation. Many countries are experiencing the negative impacts of climate change, including the United States. If temperatures continue to rise, much of the US’ wildlife will be diminished. Climate change is caused mostly by humans. The use of electricity, transportation, and harvesting resources can emit thousands of tons of …show more content…
Many animals that make up the communities are experiencing life changing shifts in survival tactics and health. Life cycle events are being altered by changing climates. Migration times are being shifted earlier in the year due to the heat changes. This can result in starvation of animals if there are not enough resources in the area when they arrive. Hibernation times are similar - if animals get out of hibernation too early, there is a chance that the amounts of food and other resources needed to survive could be decreased because the time of year is not right. Mating is being shifted as well, and this can cause eggs to hatch too early or infant deaths if the climate is not right when they are born. Some birds that lay eggs too early experience babies hatching with birth defects because of the heat. Breeding grounds can be destroyed, as necessary wetlands or cooler areas dry up, leaving numbers of certain species unable to produce. Food webs are also destroyed if lower bottom animals die off - this leads to starvation and dependant predators are unable to …show more content…
Wildlife can only survive in specific circumstances and humans are destroying their habitats and chances of survival by not being environmentally friendly. Humans are a major factor in the decline of healthy ecosystems, but can also try to prevent more drastic changes to nature’s way of life by limiting use of resources, using cleaner energy and decreasing pollution. Much more wildlife will be able to thrive in the future if more things are accomplished now, and the risks of climate change are
They aren't able to adapt and figure their new environment quickly enough. Documents B, E, and F each tell about a specific organism that was affected by the dramatic climate change, these organisms spend years trying to perfect their home, diet, and children. Document B states, “Organisms are dying out, especially in certain areas where they aren't able to adapt as quickly, but they don't have the chance to do all that work over, so they have to live with that and start over until they reach safety again.
Global warming appears to be caused by human beings. There is too much CO2 in the atmosphere for plants and trees to take in all of it. There is strong evidence that humans are to blame, not just due to cars and factories but also from agriculture. A majority of scientists and scientific organizations believe humans are causing global warming.
The most important stakeholder in the this issue are animals, as they are currently facing the most lethal impacts of climate change. And one very important group that has been working very hard to deal with environmental issues is the Climate Action
The article discussed the changes in many habitats due to anthropogenic activity. Anthropogenic is an adjective that describes changes in nature due to the people. Next, this article discussed climate change and the impact that it is having on species like clams, and fish due to ocean temperatures rising. The article also addressed carbon dating of fossils to look for cause of extinctions. Human development and agriculture have had a tremendous impact on the population of many species that are terrestrial. Deforestation is a big problem that has caused a decline in the bird species. Commercial fishing in many areas has led to a decline in fish populations. Furthermore this article
Climate change and its link to increased terrorist activity will directly and indirectly affect the United States in the next ten years, while also laying the foundation for climate change to become one of the most pressing security challenges that the United States will face in the coming years.
The climate change will affect an animal’s ecosystem in many ways. The Changes affect the richness, the range, the distribution and the biodiversity of a specific species environment. Northern Canada is home to many marine and land animals and climate change will have an effect of both sets of these animals. In northern Canada many of the animals have adapted to the cold temperatures, that being said as the temperature begins to increase certain animals will be unable to survive such changes which will eventually effect the food chain for other animals around the specific ecosystem in question. Although extinction of these animals in the north is not expected any time soon a large decrease in their population is possible (Prowse et al,
Shifts in temperature and precipitation will be a shock to fragile ecosystems which depend on specific climatic conditions. Many species will be unable to adapt as fast as their environment changes and face sharply reduced numbers or extinction. Scientists estimate that a warming of just 2 degree will put as many as 30% of the world's species at risk of extinction. Plants and animals aren’t the only ones feeling the pressure of changing ecosystems. Many regions will face severe water shortages in a warmer world, creating the potential for conflict. It is believed that the genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region is at least in part a response to water shortages resulting from global warming.
The release of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) due to human activity is increasing global average surface air temperatures, disrupting weather patterns, and acidifying the ocean (1). Left unchecked, the continued growth of GHG emissions could cause global average temperatures to increase by another 4°C or more by 2100 and by 1.5 to 2 times as much in many midcontinent and far northern locations (1). Although our understanding of the impacts of climate change is increasingly and disturbingly clear, there is still debate about the proper course for U.S. policy—a debate that is very much on display during the current presidential transition. But putting near-term politics aside, the mounting economic and scientific
In this article the authors present well researched information to prove their point that global warming could lead to a disruption of the connectedness within different populations of animals and could even cause a reorganization of species communities. The authors provide an ample amount of information about what global warming has already done to animals in order to support their predictions of what this means for the future. Despite having more than enough evidence to support that global warming is affecting animals, a majority of the paper is hypotheticals about what could happen for the future thus making it less credible. The authors do an exceptional job of using ethos and pathos throughout the piece. They use ethos when discussing
Climate change in America is getting worse everyday and can destroy many of living organisms including humans; therefore, humans need to cut our greenhouse gas emissions fast or, oceans will be dramatically changed, the ice will melt causing floods, and the changing in weather causing severe damage. These are major issues that need to be resolved if we are planning on making a bright future on earth.
Not two weeks ago, I was floating on a noodle, beer in hand, life and conversation good; when the topic of climate change came up and I was presented with an opportunity to ponder why people see the same things so differently.
In early 2013, the attention of the world was turned to the smog in China. The southern parts of the country were covered by dense smog that made it impossible for road transportation. While transportation might have been the most affected by the smog, there were also concerns about the health impacts of the smog on people. Analysts indicated that since the smog was associated with the heavy industrialization taking place in Southern China, it was possible that the smog could poison the people. As such, the movement of people was very limited until the situation normalized. While smog continues to be a major environmental problem in China, the situation is not unique to China. Many countries are struggling with devastating environmental conditions. For example, the 2010 drought and famine in the horn of Africa have been attributed to global warming and so is the increasing frequency and severity of hurricanes in North America. The main cause of these problems has been identified to be the dependence of the world on fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal. According to Rambo (2013), about eighty percent of the global energy supplies originate from carbon-based fuels, which are fossil fuels. This notwithstanding, their emissions are connected to environmental pollution. They are also linked to an escalation in global temperatures and interference with climatic patterns. On the other hand, it is has been reported that being exposed to indoor pollution causes respiratory
“Everyone loves progress, but nobody likes change” is considered to be an anonymous quote; however, this quote is considered to be true when change is forced upon us and it may affect us negatively. Right now, with the upcoming election, we are witnesses of all proposals and possible changes that we can have. Further, college students, as myself, face important issues and changes as the upcoming election is just a few months away. One of the problem that I will face is about student debts. The second issue is that employment rates continue to increase since the 2007 recession, but the wages still the same. Finally, the climate change is the defining story of our generation, and this generation should see every candidate’s point of view on this topic because we will receive a planet that the next president can either ignore or change.
Climate change is altering the pattern of life on the planet, causing widespread species extinction, migration and behavior changes (Suzuki, n.d.). For example, female caribou migrate in the spring to small pockets of vegetation where they feed and raise there calves, but for the last decade spring has come so early that by the time the caribou reach the coastal plan, their principle of food plant has already gone to seed (Suzuki, n.d.). This proves that the female caribou are going to have to change breeding time frames, as well as migration, which will have an overall affect on the ecosystem. This also means that animals and plants will have to permanently migrate to find suitable habitats but some will not be able to move fast enough to keep up with the pace of climate change (Suzuki, n.d.). In fact, by saying that it means that some species will have to move 10 times faster than they did during the last ice age just to survive. Over 30% of land surfaces in Canada will require unrealistically high migration rates to keep up with projected climate change (Suzuki, n.d.). Another example of this issue is with Collared Lemmings. They are an important prey for snowy owls, which may lose as much as 60% of their habitat. Loss of tundra habitat could radically reduce the availability of vital breeding habitat for millions of geese and shore birds (Suzuki, n.d.). In general ecosystems are being destroyed due to
Humans have mostly contributed to the cause of global warming. Burning carbon-containg fossil fuels accounts for most human-made CO2. Land conversion, like when tropical forests are
