New York City, one of the greatest cities of the world, is remarkable because of its history, culture, and diversity. It is world renowned for its skyscrapers, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Broadway entertainment, Radio City Music Hall, Central Park, and even restaurants specializing in ethnic foods. However, the thing that most intrigues and excites me about New York City is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Interestingly, my first visit to the Museum was almost accidental. When I was a freshman, my mother was taking an art class at the College of Staten Island which required a class trip to the Metropolitan Museum, and my brother and I both agreed to accompany her. I will never forget the moment that I first laid eyes on the Metropolitan Museum. Although it was a dark, cold winter night, the shimmering lights made the building most inviting. Since then I have returned many times, just to enjoy this exhibit. Walking through the Temple of Dendur is a unique experience since it sits on a marble platform surrounded by water. The temple is especially impressive at night when no light can shine through the windows. Only the temple and its sculptures are illuminated. A sense of mystery surrounds visitors, especially those of us who have been fortunate enough to visit the pyramids in our native land. In fact, viewing the sarcophagus, sculptures, and paintings gives me a sense of nostalgia and pride in the magnificent artwork created by my ancestors.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is an extraordinary New York site. For me, the Egyptian exhibit is especially meaningful because it engenders personal pride in the contributions of my ancestors and challenges me to use my talents to impact society in a positive
