Linux is a free open-source software that anybody can use . Most people use computers don't even know that Linux exists. Most people just use whatever is already downloaded onto the computer. Or if they buy computer that has no software on it they would buy Windows or Mac since it's displayed in many stores. Difference between Linux and windows / Macs is that you can download a version that specifically displays OS that relates to what you want to use it for. For example there's different distributions that are customized to be only used for editing software. or on the other hand many people just want to use the terminal or start with a o s that is used for coding. Either way you can find many different types of Linux that you can download anywhere on the internet. all of these being free. this is one of the main …show more content…
this mainly relates to if you want to use the terminal or coding, or go with a more friendly interface such as a desktop. this will mainly split the distributions for Lennox in half one side being focused on coding and the other one using a friendly interface as a desktop . next you would look into why you're using this OS . for example you could either go towards a distribution for servers or you can go towards a distribution for creating different file systems or categories of media. once your found the distribution you would like you would then go to its home page and download the files onto a flash drive or media device. this device will become your boot drive that you will then put your computer from. you will then shut down your computer turn back on but this time into the BIOS settings. once there you will then be able to change what your computer boots to and this would be the new boot drive that you just downloaded the distribution to. at this point in your computer should boot up into the new Linux operating system that you just
Another widely used distribution is known as Linux Mint behind only Ubuntu in the number of Linux users. Started in 2006 with a purpose of providing a powerful yet comfortable operating system, Linux Mint is a community driven distribution which welcomes user feedback for upgrades and support. Linux Mint also boasts the capability of out of the box functionality requiring little maintenance and "full multimedia support".
There are many different types of computers, many different software programs. Computers have a wide variety of uses, entertainment and work are just a few of them. In order for a computer to function properly and to use any of the work or entertainment software, a computer needs an operating system. The main operating systems are Windows and Macintosh, both have their benefits and both have their disadvantages. Many people use Mac for editing videos. Linux is used for coding. Windows is used things like browsing the internet or playing games. There is a very intense debate as to which operating system is the best. Many say Mac for its user friendly software. Some say Linux, for its extreme customizability. The vast majority of people side
First, I would like to explain to you what an operating system is. I will be using the term, operating system, throughout this essay and many people do not have a clear understanding of what it is. Simply put, an operating system is the brain of any computer or electronic device. The operating system is a bundle of information that directs all the operations that a computer does in order to function properly. The operating system sends information to and from communication resources of applications that you use or your device uses. When the geniuses of Silicon Valley were discovering how to create a system that would allow for multiple applications to be used, they gave birth to the operating system. This very basic system was called Linux. Linux is the most fundamental base of an
Both Windows and Linux come in many different forms. All the different forms of Windows come from Microsoft, the various distributions of Linux come from different companies (ex. Red Hat, SuSE, Linspire, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Knoppix, etc). Windows has two main lines: “Win9x”, which is consists of Windows 95, 98, 98SecondEdition and ME, and “NT class” which consists of Windows NT, 200 and XP. On a side note, Windows first had version 3.x which was made before Windows 95 by a couple of years. The various types of Linux are called distributions. All the Linux distributions released around the same time frame will use the same kernel, which are the guts of the OS. They will differ with the add-on software provided,
Linux is a software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access any devices on the computer to perform its desired functions. To put it simply, Linux is an operating system that enable to manage the communication between software and hardware. The operating system (OS) relays instructions from an application to, for example, the computer’s processor. The processor performs the instructed task, then send the results back to the application via the OS.
Windows, and Linux are very different operating systems that are also very similar in multiple ways. Windows was first sold on November 20, 1985 under the name Windows 1.0. It was revolutionary for it's time. People had been used to using command line interface to type out there commands. Windows 1.0 allowed for them to just point and click on what they wanted. Then, along came Linux a few years later. Linux was revolutionary because it was Unix-like and it was open source. Open source meant that anyone could access the source code to tailor it to their liking. This has allowed multiple different versions of Linux to be produced since then including one called Lindows. Lindows is exactly what you would expect from the name. It is a version
Some Linux distributions are more popular than others based on the features they offer. The most popular, although newest, Linux distribution is Ubuntu. It has a very easy-to-use desktop that can
The Microsoft and Linux operating systems have been long considered to be in a competition to be the best operating systems on the market. This paper will compare and contrast these operating systems to help the consumer decide which is right for his or her environment. Such subjects as; cost, market share, hardware requirements, file processing, programming capabilities, availability if application software, networking, and user interface will be examined.
Linux is a free operating system that was developed on the internet. It was formed by Linus Torvalds first, then he put its source code to his web page. After that, the internet hackers and the programmers developed it.It is a Unix-like operating system because it is the main reason to develop the Linux.By the time,it becomes a big organization and now it is a powerful, advanced operating system. It has an important feature that is not available for other operating systems. You can run Linux with other operating systems like MacOS, DOS,Windows 95, Windows NT, Novell, OS/2 on the same machine. It is an advantage of linux that a user can easily compare Linux with other operating systems.
Linux is, in simplest terms, an Operating System. It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access the
UNIX operating systems have a similar graphical user interface to Microsoft Windows, so provides an easy to use environment. It allows more one user to use the machine at the same time and also allows more than one program to be run at the same time. It’s a reliable operating system which provides operation of database systems, automatic backup and recovery, network access and programmability.
Since Linux is allowed to be changed by its users there are more than 600 distributions available. Here is a list of five of the most commonly used.
7) Linux distributions like Ubuntu and RedHat, are operating systems made by individual entities that take all the pieces of a linux system, and puts it all in one place. When we download a distribution like ubuntu, you're downloading an operating system that was put together by people that chose what pieces of the linux puzzle they wanted to put together and how. Distribution can be completely different from one another, some distributions can be used to run a desktop computer similar to mac or windows device, some are used in hobby project like mini retro arcade machines and some are used in servers. Three different applications which would need three different linux distribution.
The operating system Linux is an open source version of UNIX [6]. In 1992 [8] Linus Torvalds, who was a computer science student -at the University of Helsinki- [6], was the one who started this operating system.
An operating system is a system software that manages and control all interaction between a computer hardware and software. There are several types of operating systems, for example, multi-user, multitasking, single user and more. The first ever created OS date back in the 50’s. As computer and technology progress over time operating system kept evolving. Among the commonly used operating systems of today is Linux, a Unix-like type of OS. Linux creation begins in 1991 as a software kernel and part of a small project developed by Linus Torvalds, a student from a University in Finland. Under GNU (general public license), the software was available as a free and open source and gave everyone the right to access, change and modify its original design. Because of the way it is designed it can run on multiple platforms such has Intel, Alpha and more.
