The Online Orientation to Successful Online course was implemented with a small group of 3 volunteer student support Advisors. Even though I originally had 5 volunteer, only three signed up and completed the course. The participants were two female and one male with similar technology and background educational experience. The course was conducted using the learner management system CourseSite. The course was conducted by two student support specialist and one enrollment specialist who agreed to participate in the pilot course and provide honest opinion on their experience. All participants had experience with an online course; therefore, they were aware of the course format.
Some of the challenges of this course included:
An outside resource training was updated and instructions did not lined with the module instructions making it confusing for the participant
Not all participants completed the pre and pro test.
Not all agreed participants took the course.
Analysis of Assessment and Evaluation Data
There were three assessments and evaluations built into the course. A pre-test survey a post-test survey and a course evaluation. The purpose was to gain “feedback to designers for making course improvements” (Morrison, Ross, Kalman, & Kemp, 2013, p.318). Most of the participants completed the pre and post-test assessment for the course. The pre and post-test was designed using survey monkey and the link was provided with the module. This surveys collected data about their initial and post course knowledge of an online course. The pre-test survey data was compared with the post-test data assess the learning gain and to see the outcome after completing the course. A pretest is designed to heighten the student’s awareness of the content by providing cues to the key points of the upcoming instruction (Morrison, Ross, Kalman, & Kemp, 2013, p. 177). Their primary findings was that participation and communication is certainly a requirement for successful completion of online courses. When instructors are involved and encourage students to participate it motivates students to not give up or drop the class. In order to analyze student participation they "presented an 8 week course on web-based distance learning to Masters students on a computer-integrated education course at the University of Pretoria" (Nagel et. al., 2007, p.41). Matriculated in this course were students from a diverse background and different age groups ranging from 30 to 50 years old.
To summarize, the topic presented in this article is about online courses which are widely used in colleges providing easy access to course materials, classroom discussions, and feedback to instructors. The course materials and activities may be accessed from any computer, whether it is from the University or from the comfort of your own home.
Receiving an education via an online course is one that has begun with many challenges. I have come from having no knowledge of researching information to feel like I have journeyed a long way finding the confidence to research pertinent and quality resources. Through this particular unit I have been given the implements to develop a sound knowledge of online group collaborations and the programs to allow the communication to take place.
My first experience with a course conducted completely using computer-based instruction as an adult learner occurred during the fall semester of 2007. I was nearing the completion of my first Master’s degree and enrolled in ED500A, which was an educational research class. Although I had extensive experience utilizing technology and the Internet, and had dabbled in CBI, this course was conducted entirely online and proved to be challenging for me. In today’s society, so many people are continuing their education beyond high school. We realize that in order to make a decent living, a degree is most likely a requirement. In some cases even a bachelor’s degree is not enough to qualify for many positions. Nevertheless, thanks to technology, we now have the option to learn online or in a traditional classroom setting. There are very few differences between the two, and students need to understand that as much time and energy will need to be devoted to the online courses as on a campus. “A 2010 meta-analysis and review of online-learning studies concluded that online learning was as good as or slightly more effective than traditional face-to-face instruction” (Mendenhall, 2011).
Devices, websites and social media platforms are all competing for the attention of online users and consumers. As a result, it can be a challenge to keep online consumers engaged because a dozen competitor websites are only a few clicks away. Therefore, companies should focus on creating and maintaining meaningful relationships with their online consumers.
Online college courses are almost becoming traditional for students. Some may perceive that a student does not receive an equal education when taking an online class. Online classes are just, if not more, effective as traditional classes because grades have increased and online discussions provide students with the chance to interact through networking while earning a degree for less than what it would cost to enroll at the same university.

Other features on the online courses are the learning aides that can be used while taking the course. Certain programs can be made such as flash cards and games which can increase the learning experience of the student. These learning aides can be done on the student’s time and does not require the teacher to be there.
Andrew Simoncelli once said, “Students who take online classes must be motivated, independent learners.” This is relevant because independence and motivation is what it takes to succeed in an online course. Online learning will not only expand what students learn, but will also bring a number of positive changes in the way students are taught.
