Anne Frank
“I hope I shall be able to confide in you completely, as I have never been able to do in anyone before, and I hope that you will be a great support and comfort for to me” ( Frank). Anne Frank, short for Anneliese Marie Frank, was born in 1929, and died around 1945. Her father, Otto Frank, was born in 1889 and died in 1980, and was a prosperous businessman. On January 30, 1933, Hitler had taken over Germany. Anne and her family were Jewish, and they were forced to move to a new place for a new life. Anne Frank was a victim of the holocaust, and she would later use her experience before, during, and after WWII to illustrate through her writing, the thought of a teenager during a time war.
Before WW2, Anne attend two school’s; Montessori Lyceum Amsterdam and Jewish Lyceum. Anne was born on June 12,1929, in Frankfurt, Germany. She was the child of Otto and Edith Frank. Throughout her childhood, her and her father Otto, her mother Edith, and her older sister Margot, lived generally carefree lives in the German city, Frankfurt am Main. Growing up she was raised as a liberal Jew, and her and her family typically didn’t follow all customs and traditions of Judaism, the religion that Jewish people followed. When Anne was born, the family lived in an apartment like building called Marbachweg 307, where they rented out two floors. In 1931 when Anne was around the age of three, they moved into Ganghoferstrasse 24 in a modern, liberal area called Dichterviertel. When Hitler began his reign in 1933 the Frank family had moved out of fear of their lives, and were among the 30 000 Jews who had managed to escape Germany. When the family moved to Amsterdam, Anne and Margot were immediately enrolled in school. Margot was enrolled in public school, while Anne was enrolled in a Montessori school, a type of education focused mainly on observation of the child. During her years at her Montessori school Anne showed great aptitude for writing, and her friend Hanneli Goslar even recalls Anne writing a lot when they were younger, though she never let anyone read her writing and would shield it with her hands and refuse to tell anyone about it. The Franks were driven into hiding on July 14th, 1942 when Anne Frank’s sister Margot got a call to report to a work camp (Thoughtco.com). The family quickly packed and went into hiding. Otto Frank, Anne Franks father, owned a warehouse into which the family quickly departed. In just a day they had moved into a hidden room in the warehouse called the secret annex hidden by a movable bookshelf (See Figure 1).
The four of them packet their things and pulled on layers of cloths in order to take them with them and began their walk to the annex on July 9th. The secret annex was above her father warehouse and house the Franks and four other Jews. The other four Jew included Herman and Auguste Van Pels and their son Peter, and later in November Fritz Pefeffer. Between the eight people with differing personalities and opinions the tensions in the annex grew faster than expected, though no yelling could ensue for the fear of being caught.
