Personal Narrative: My Writing

For many writing comes naturally, for myself it is sometimes a struggle. Back in high school I could sum up my view of writing with two words, a battle. I avoided writing like it was the plague, this continued through my first few years of college right after high school. I have since evolved from being apprehensive from my irrational fears that kept me from writing, and now am able to pick up a pad and pencil and enjoy my time writing.

I don’t really like writing because whenever my teacher tells me to write about something I start to get confused on what to say then I start to get mad at myself and start to cry.The best thing I have ever written is when I had to wrote about legos, it was a nine pages and alot idioms and more.

I learned a few interesting reasons regarding my overall feelings for writing. Up until now, I never examined why I disliked writing. Looking back at my past experiences with writing I now have a better understanding on what was holding me back. Self-confidence certainly played a large factor in my avoidance of writing. After writing the essay on my relationship with writing, I can use what I have learned from that exercise and apply it to my future writing adventures. I need to be more self-confident, and not worry about any judgments. I need to realize that I am able to express my thoughts through writing. This exercise gave me a very good perspective on my avoidance of writing and will help propel me to write more in the future.

I have a love-hate relationship with writing. I can write well according to some of my peers; though this could just be from the fact that I seem like the quiet, studious, type who has spent most of her time with the straight "A" nerds who went on to top tier schools such as Stanford. Sometimes I am not too sure of my own writing abilities. On most essays, I get a little bit above average grades and every once in a while I get a few more points than usual. I have noticed that my writing is better when I have to write about a topic I am passionate or know a lot about. The more I have to work with the better. Otherwise, my writing seems poor, forced, and somewhat bland. It usually follows a poor or basic thesis statement and lazy paragraphs. I believe motivation helps me to write better,

My attitude towards writing is very unfavorable. I just don’t enjoy it at all. It’s a very tedious task when you factor in all of the revision steps that it takes to produce a quality essay. Writing requires a long amount of time spent planning and preparing that is not for impatient people like myself. However, I believe that with a little bit of some confidence and patience, I could learn to enjoy myself when I write. I think it’s a great outlet for some but just hasn’t ever really been something that made me feel relaxed or stress-free. Writing just clouds my head with confusion and anxiety. I guess I can blame this on the fact that all my previous experiences writing has been academic and in a time-restricted environment. However, I am excited to see how my impression of writing changes throughout my college career now that I am not confined to a forty-minute window.

Al, Alde, de, shon, deshon, and Al’Deshon my name takes on many forms. Kind of like my writing in a sense. I have never been a strong writing also being the reason, I took this class first semester I think. If I get it out of the way maybe I’ll have an easier chance of reaching the finish line happening to be graduation.

Thinking about our first writing assignment, one of the suggestions focuses on the comparison of writing to running, it became apparent to me that this is something I would enjoy writing about. I am a long time running advocate, competing in marathons, and a neophyte writing student, and I find many similarities in both endeavors.

Writing isn’t for everyone, yet the number of people writing in this exact moment is pretty monstrous if you google it. Writing has basically been there for me since I was born, it was there when they wrote my birth certificate, when i was learning how to write my name, when i wrote my first essay, taking the STAAR tests, practicing for the AP test, to my first writing assignment for college. People are gifted with creating such rich, breathtaking, emotional, and deep work that last for generations and generations (not me), but writing has not always been a friend to me. The process of writing is not just write and your done, no you need to take time and let your ideas gush out (duh you already knew that) but also to edit and revise to make those final drafts. Writing can be a huge pain in the buttocks (ass), but it isn 't that bad. Here are some of my issues and strengths about writing and my take on it.

Writing, when given a prompt or focus point, comes more naturally to me than some other things. I find writing and composing soothing and meditative, therefore I enjoy to write in a quiet environment such as my room, a classroom, or library. The room must be somewhat calm in order for me to process my thoughts in an effective, orderly manner that I can then write down. I do little writing outside of school and class work, so the majority of my writing is for academic purposes. Whenever I formally sit down to write an essay or prompt, I must have soft music or some type of noise playing because if the room is too quiet, I tend to become distracted. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if the room is too loud, it is impossible for me to focus

Seated in my petunia pink room at my tan desk an excruciating voice rang through my eardrum. “Again!” the voice bellowed. I hurried to rewrite my work. I started at the beginning with printed letters. A,a,B,b,C,c… I wrote every letter of the alphabet capitalized and lower cased. “Now cursive!” snapped the voice sharply. Again, I wrote all the letters but in cursive this time.

Hi, I’m Brooke Yliniemi. I am an involved high school student at Menahga High School. Through creative writing class, I was able to broaden and strengthen all my writing skills. I have always enjoyed writing, but never truly knew where to begin. With creative writing, I was able to find out my personal style of writing and what interests me. My writing has improved abundantly when it comes to writing poetry, and short stories. Through each section, I was able to grasp new skills and create personal goals to become my own writer.

There I was sitting in the guest room of my aunts house. It was hot, the AC was busted, and I have not even started my history project. “I knew I should have started this sooner.” I said to myself. Ten minutes pass, and I'm still writing the first paragraph, when all of a sudden I hear a voice. “Take a little break man; you’re stressing yourself out.” I tried to ignore it, but the next thing I knew my left arm began to reach for my phone. I stopped myself. “I have to finish this project.” I said to myself, but I was not strong enough to stop myself a second time. As my phone sent a notification about a new video, my left arm sprang up and grabbed my phone. I wasn’t in control of myself. I couldn’t stop myself. It felt like the drive to

I have always loved writing ever since we started having writing prompts in elementary school. I was always so excited to give out a story. I would make these elaborate stories that evolved some fantasy aspects. The only thing that would mess me up in my writing process is that I would have a difficult time setting up the start of the story. The video talked about this, and advised me to get a journal or diary. This would help me write anyway I like without judgment. I am fairly new to the revision part of writing. I would always turn in my draft as is, but now that I think about I would love someone who can give me some advice on my drafts. I've never had a full writing process myself. This has lead to writer's block in the past drafts.

A couple of years ago my English teacher assigned me to write a short novel. At first I wasn’t really thrilled about having to spend 3 weeks writing a book for one of my least favorite subjects. I thought it was going to be hard and not worth the effort, until I started to write. Once I had my topic and an outline the writing came to me very easily. After a while of writing I started to get into the assignment and it became more of a pleasing task. I firmly believe it was that assignment that made me realize I was a better writer than I thought and that if I put my mind into it could produce good writing.
