Capital Punishment Capital Punishment is a legal punishment where a lot of innocent people have been convicted and executed. It’s a punishment determining who lives and who dies, I believe Capital Punishment should no longer be an option. The death penalty puts innocent lives at risk, there are better alternatives and The Eighth Amendment prohibiting cruel or unusual punishment. According to “Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty” The Facts: 13 Reasons to Oppose the Death Penalty “Since 1976 138 innocent men and women have been released from death row.” (Paragraph 2) Truthfully a lot of untold numbers of innocent people have been executed. Avvo stories “8 People Who Were Executed and Later Found Innocent,” “In 1992 Willingham was convicted of arson murder in Texas. He was believed to have intentionally set a fire that killed his three kids. In 2004, he was put to death. Unfortunately, the Texas Forensic Science Commission later found that the evidence was misinterpreted, and they concluded that none of the evidence used against Willingham was valid. As it turns out, the fire really was accidental.” (Mike 2) Now that he was executed and was later found innocent there is nothing they can do to bring this innocent man life back. I believe there is better alternatives such as life without parole. The State of Oregon have the option of sentencing convicted murderers to prison with the possibility of parole. It’s been said that life without parole is a more severe punishment. American Civil Liberties of Northern California states in their article “The Truth About Life Without Parole: Condemned to Die in Prison,” “Spending even a small amount of time in California’s overcrowded, dangerous prisons is not pleasant. Spending thirty years there, growing sick and old, and dying there, is a horrible experience. It also gives the people who are convicted who may be innocent time to appeal their case instead of being executed and later finding out they were innocent.” Legally having the power to kill someone who may have committed a crime is not only wrong in my opinion, but may also be any easier alternative for the perpetrator. Being able to sit and think about the crime(s) knowing they can never
Capital punishment is one of the most controversial topics in today’s world. Many people believe that it is morally wrong to have capital punishment as a sentence to a crime. People also do believe that it is morally permissible for a severe crime. Capital punishment is also known as the death penalty. It can be given as a sentence when somebody is convicted of an extremely violent crime. The biggest issue that can be seen with this is that somebody could be innocent and sentenced with the death penalty because of the nature of the crime that they have been accused of even if they didn’t commit it. I believe that there is a moral line between using the death penalty and using other forms of punishment.
Capital punishment is a legal authorization to kill someone for a crime they have committed. The death penalty has been the highest form of criminal punishment in the American judicial system since the 13 colonies. It has taken the form of hanging, stoning, drowning, burning, beheading, gassing, electrocution, and injection. The taking of a man 's life as penance for criminal behavior is wrong. The moral injustice of murder, the cruelty of execution, and the death of innocent men are all concerns that make the death penalty wrong. Our society has taught children that violence is not the answer and yet our highest form of punishment is executing someone which does not solve anything, nor does it fix a problem. The United States should abolish the death penalty due to execution of innocent people, excessive cost and it is against the US constitution.
In my opinion the death penalty truly does help to eliminate the problem of overpopulation in prisons. When prisons become overpopulated more money is needed to pay for supplies for inmates. Why should taxpayers have to pay for criminal that have murdered people? Murdering someone is honestly one of the worst things a person could ever do. Americans should not have to pay to provide inmates with television. The person that was murdered is not going to be able to watch television, so why should the killer be able too. Inmates just sit in jail watching television, doing crafts, playing sports, eating, working, and sleeping. Many people say life without parole is better than the death penalty. I strongly disagree with this statement, because life without parole allows a killer to keep living their life after they took the life of another person. Plus keeping everyone just in prison without parole goes back to the fact it is very costly to pay for prison inmates. Overpopulation in prisons can lead to many riots, injuries, and even deaths. These riots can be from the cause of not enough food or supplies in the prison. Many prisoners have been known to kill their fellow cellmates, but yet all they get is another life sentence for taking another life. I do not agree that life without parole is better than the death penalty. After learning what talks place with killers in prison and
California has executed just 10 inmates since it restored capital punishment in 1978. In that same period, 38 death row inmates have died of other causes: three were killed by other prisoners, a dozen committed suicide and the rest died of natural causes (www.deathpenalty.org) According to California law, all death penalty appeals are heard by the Supreme Court. It is more likely that an inmate, who is sentenced to death, will sit on death row for more than five years before he is appointed an attorney for his first and mandatory appeal to the California Supreme Court.
I completely disagree with the archaic and obsolete way of the death penalty since it's way to expensive, it doesn't make the crime go away and the person could be innocent. First off , the amount of money spent on the death penalty is tremendous. Los Angeles Times Study Finds California Spends $250 Million per Execution in a 2005 article, ACLU has reported that "California taxpayers pay at least $117 million each year post-trial seeking execution of the people currently on death row;Executing all of the people currently on death row, or waiting for them to die there of other causes, will cost California an estimated $4 billion more than if they had been sentenced to die in prison of disease, injury, or old age; California death penalty trials
Even though there’s always going to be different opinions regarding the death penalty. I believe that the criminal should serve life in prison and pay for their crime that way. Rather than being executed because it is not really that accurate so instead of making a big deal about death penalty the government should focus on ways to prevent crimes. However the government pays more attention to what punishment the criminal will receive. In, Sentencing For Life, the author writes, In Alabama, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Edward Carnes, who headed the state's capital punishment division as assistant attorney general for many years, said that "life without parole in Alabama means just that--no parole, no commutation, no way out until the day you die, period." (Dieter 13). Life imprisonment is a more convenient way for not only society but it benefits the government too by not spending too many resources on the criminal. In, Sentencing For Life, the author states, “From all indications, America could be safer without the death penalty and would realize an enormous monetary saving as well. Judging by the crime rates in those states that have abolished capital punishment and
Thousands of people will attack the death penalty. They will give emotional speeches about the one innocent man or woman who might accidentally get an execution sentence. However, all of these people are forgetting one crucial element. They are forgetting the thousands of victims who die every year by the hands of heartless murderers. There are more murderers out there than people who are wrongly convicted, and that is what we must remember.
The death penalty is one of the worst punishments for criminals. There are so many problems rooted in the death penalty.I believe we should get rid of the death penalty because they could be killing an innocent person that has been convicted. We should also get rid of the death penalty because killing someone is more expensive than keeping them in jail for life.People on death row are promised a quick death not a slow and painful one but there have been times when prisoners are taking longer to die and its more painful than it should be.
The death penalty is a good source of punishment because if a person commits a murder they deserves to be punished. However, the death penalty is cruel, inhuman and degrading. The death penalty disregards the eight amendment; which states that “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted” (U.S Constitution). The death penalty is unconstitutional because it violation of the eight Amendment. The death penalty serves as a double negative. Why kill someone for committing a murder? The death penalty does not solve the crime, fix the problems that were caused by the crime, or teach anyone a lesson. Not only does the death penalty violate the eight amendment it also violates basic human rights.
There is a better way to execute someone without the risk of killing hundreds of innocents, an example is life without parole, an example is Oregon there is the option of sentencing murderers to life in prison without parole. Every day people are executed by the state for a variety of crimes, sometimes for acts that should not be criminalized. Before people die they are imprisoned for years on death row, not knowing when their time is up, or if they will see their families one last time. Not only is capital punishment morally incorrect but it does not help the economy of the states. Enforcing the death penalty costs Florida $51 million a year above what it would cost to punish all first degree murderers with life in prison without parole. Another example is Texas, the average cost of death penalty is $2.3 million, three times the price payed to imprison someone for fourty years. (Death Penalty Information Centre). Currently the state of California is fighting to eliminate capital punishment with Proposition 62, the passing of this proposition could save the state $150 million per year. A death row sentence costs eighteen more than life in prison, all mosey that could be spent on education, public safety, and crime prevention. (Official Voter Information
Capital punishment, otherwise known as the death penalty, has been effective tool in our country’s justice system since its inception. When an inmate is given this, the harshest sentence available, it is always with just cause. Capital Punishment is an important tool in our criminal justice system today and there are several reasons it should remain in effect.
The death penalty is not only inhumane but too easy for these criminals that deserve it. The life sentence is swift, severe and certain punishment according to The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU, 2015). Sentencing someone to die in jail is a pragmatic alternative to public safety along with murder victims’ families to still provide them with justice. The death penalty can be consider the easy way out. Being only about 20 minutes of terror. The life sentence gets more justice out of the criminal, they have to sit in a cell for the
While criminals must be punished for their criminal actions, “legalized murder”, as author Coretta Scott King put it, is immoral. The death penalty is legalizing the very thing that many on death row are charged for, murder. There is a multitude of lawful alternatives, to the death penalty, of reestablishing a better reputation for the criminals. The Constitution has no true right to allow such a felonious form of rehabilitation.
People that are against capital punishment say that life in prison without parole serves just as well. That would be the case if you ignore all the murders criminals commit while in prison
Perhaps we should give the judge a knife and tell her that if she has
