Political Parties: What Does One Party Means

Political parties today started to form in the late 1600’s. In 1787, Hamilton and other leaders joined and called themselves the Federalist. The Federalist party is the party which is most qualified for the presidency because the Federalist want a central government, want to avoid foreign affairs, and also want a central banking system. In the United States of America, the political party system is pivotal to the function of our nation. The political party system in our society today is separated between the Democrats and the Republicans. Although political parties do possess uncertainties their advantages outweigh their drawbacks in America. The 2016 elections are underway and citizens are wondering: why is there a Democratic and Republican party? What caused them to split up? Political parties are people who make an alliance with other people so, they can work together to win elections and have a say in the government. This is important to know because when you grow up and be able to vote you need to know the difference between democratic and republican.

The division of ideas led to the creation of the two-party system. The main issue between the two parties was how they believed the Constitution should be read and interpreted. When George Washington was president he assigned to people to his cabinet. Hamilton and Jefferson both which seen differences in the constitution. In the United States, we have a majority rule type of system where only one person represents an entire district of people. This system is extremely pluralized, which means that people will favor either extreme on the view of an issue. Due to these reasons, only two parties can coexist, and it is difficult for a third party to gain favor in the masses, which is Duverger’s Law. In the history of the United States, there has usually been two political parties that represented the views of the masses. Each of these parties had a certain way that they believed about the major issues of the time that were brought up or could be influenced by the government. The reason that only two parties have ever been able to establish themselves in government is because of the majority ruled system that our government has, and the love people have for having a definite answer rather than an indefinite one.

There were many events that lead to America splitting into two political parties in the 1790’s. The two parties are the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans and when it comes to the government they have completely different views. The Federalists were lead by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and John Adams and lived mainly in the north. They strongly supported the central government because they believed that the government should be big and strong. The Democratic Republicans lived mainly in the west and south and were lead by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In the year 1854, Senator Stephen Douglas who was from the state of Illinois, wanted to run for president, and he wanted southern Democrats to support him. Political campaigning is now the full-fledged live version of chess, with pawns, queens and kings, but is all this parading and strategizing actually important? What is even the purpose behind political campaigns; is it to inform the public about a candidate or through clever means to win an election at all costs? The main controversy was over whether a strong federal government was better than strong states. Out of this controversy two factions arose, the federalists and the anti-federalists. These two different styles of governing continued over even after the constitution was ratified. This eventually led to the party system we see today.

Today, there exists the rift in the American political system marked by the ongoing clash between our political parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. These parties’ dissenting ideas seem to create non-stop conflict as each party relentlessly competes for the support and votes of the American people. However, over two hundred years ago in the early days of our country’s government, political parties did not even exist. Early leaders, such as the revered George Washington, feared that political parties would split our country into warring factions that would not only subvert our delicate notion of patriotism, but also weaken public support for the new Constitution. Nonetheless, despite opposition by Washington and others, political parties began to form, and over the years have developed into the familiar political system we have today. The chief factors that led to the rise of political parties were the disagreements between influential politicians over the structure of the government, the proper interpretation of the Constitution, and foreign policy regarding European nations.

Candidates have a chance to present their ideas to the citizens through debates and other platforms that are available for the candidates. It provides a platform for the citizens to debate important issues with the candidates and among themselves.
